This paper attempts to show what academics and other stakeholders think about academic change in an Institute of Technology in Ireland as this HEI attempts to respond to a rapidly changing external s becoming a university and moving to a new campus on a green field site. Avoiding The Peep Show: Talking From Within The Tattoo Community, Rhonda Dass
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
Within the tattoo community in the United States, and specifically within the tattoo artist community, the historic legacy of the commodification of tattooed individuals has created a strong reaction against the idea that they influence people in choosing to be tattooed. The narratives of capture and forced tattooing vilified the people doing the tattooing not those receiving the tattoos. While the carnival barkers were not identifying American citizens as the "barbarians" that would inflict ink on an unwilling person, the association nonetheless came to be. To distance themselves from the image of the "savage tattooer", the tattoo artist community has …

Framing Graffiti: Walls As Sites/Sights Of Resistance To The Regulation Of Public Space, Alexa Anderson

In this paper I explore the extent to which contemporary urban graffiti can serve as a form of resistance to an ideology that excludes some people from participation in the public sphere. Using a theoretical framework drawn from Jurgen Habermas, Don Mitchell, and Richard Freeman, I explain how visual interruptions to the normal order of the city may serve to open up public spaces as sites of discourse and dissent. Specifically, I analyze the implications of the larger-than-life characters who play major roles in the New Orleans staging of this conflict: international graffiti artist Banksy, infamous anti-graffiti vigilante the Gray …

In recent years, an increasing interest in the appropriation of folklore by political leaders has led scholars to investigate potential instances where this may have occurred in the past. This work follows that tradition, examining the life and actions of King Edward I of England to determine if there are instances where he is making deliberate use of folk narrative for his own political aims. An analysis of several events discussed by past historians indicates that the king was intentionally manipulating the Arthurian legend, which was highly popular in Europe during the thirteenth century, to justify his claims to authority …

This Population Council report is a mid-term evaluation and documentation of the process and approach of the FGM-Free Village Model in Egypt. The objective of this report is to create a knowledge base of information to support policy dialogue on female genital mutilation (FGM) and to assist in transferring knowledge about the model to other communities across Egypt and other countries where FGM is practiced. Impact evaluation at the community level shows the significant impact of the project in changing views and attitudes toward FGM among intervention groups. Visions And Values: Ethical Reflections In A Jamesian Key, David E. Leary

The purpose of this article is to provide a quick survey of William James's views on the plurality of visions that humans have regarding reality, as a background for more extensive discussions of his views on the plurality of values that orient human thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, as well as his views on the enactment of those values through active resistance to the ways things are and the risk-taking involved in striving to improve the human condition. Consonant with pluralism itself, I intend this discussion to open up rather than close off further considerations of James's views on ethics.

The Role Of Nina In Diana Son's Satellites: A Production Thesis In Acting, Jessica Wu

This thesis explores the role of Nina in Swine Palace’s 2009 production of Diana Son’s Satellites. The play investigates themes dealing with interracial relationships, major life transitions, and parenthood. Included in this study are a character autobiography written from the actor’s interpretation of the role, the actor’s journal, and a detailed account of the in rehearsal and performance process. In addition, this study includes production photos, reviews, a working copy of the script scored for subtext/inner life, objectives, and tactics, and an interview with the playwright.

The roles of Saint Matthew and Caiaphas the Elder in Stephen Adly Guirgis’s The Last Days of Judas Iscariot were performed in the fall of 2008 and elected as a thesis role at the time. This thesis is a written record of the actor’s research and development of the characters. This thesis includes background information on the production, historical research on the characters, character analyses, reflections on performance issues and the rehearsal process, and production photos.
