Midwave Infrared Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometry Of Combustion Plumes, Kenneth C. Bradley Dec 2009

Midwave Infrared Imaging Fourier Transform Spectrometry Of Combustion Plumes, Kenneth C. Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

A midwave infrared (MWIR) imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (IFTS) was used to successfully capture and analyze hyperspectral imagery of combustion plumes. Jet engine exhaust data from a small turbojet engine burning diesel fuel at a flow rate of 300 cm3/min was collected at 1 cm−1 resolution from a side-plume vantage point on a 200x64 pixel window at a range of 11.2 meters. Spectral features of water, CO, and CO2 were present, and showed spatial variability within the plume structure. An array of thermocouple probes was positioned within the plume to aid in temperature analysis. A single-temperature …

Dose: Comparison Of 6 And 12 Nutrition And Physical Activity Sessions Targeting Middle School Adolescents, Mical Shilts, Anna Martin, Marilyn Townsend Dec 2009

Dose: Comparison Of 6 And 12 Nutrition And Physical Activity Sessions Targeting Middle School Adolescents, Mical Shilts, Anna Martin, Marilyn Townsend

Journal of Youth Development

Determining optimal intervention dose to meet time constraints of the teacher while maximizing behavioral impact for students has proven challenging. This study investigated the influence of intervention dose on 7th & 8th grade participants’ dietary and physical activity (PA) behaviors. Participants were assigned randomly to a: 1) 6 week-12 session nutrition intervention [treatment#1], or 2) 3 week-6 session nutrition intervention [treatment#2] with data collected pre/post intervention. Using ANCOVA, measures assessed dietary and PA self-efficacy and behaviors. Ethnically diverse participants (n=107) were included in the analyses (46% male). All students set two goals: one dietary and one PA regardless of dose. …

Governance In Motion: Service Provision And Child Welfare Outcomes In A Performance-Based, Managed Care Contracting Environment, Bowen Mcbeath, William Meezan Dec 2009

Governance In Motion: Service Provision And Child Welfare Outcomes In A Performance-Based, Managed Care Contracting Environment, Bowen Mcbeath, William Meezan

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Examining the linkage between service provision and client outcomes is important in performance-based human service environments. Since most performance initiatives reward agencies for improving client outcomes rather than providing specific services, managers may have incentives to streamline workers’ efforts and reduce resources devoted to services considered nonessential. This article uses data from a performance-based child welfare initiative to examine the relationship between child permanency outcomes, the services provided by caseworkers, and the environment surrounding frontline service provision. Findings indicate that greater service efforts are required to reunify children with parents than to reach other outcomes, including adoption and placement with …

Short To Medium Range Time Series Prediction Of Solar Irradiance Using An Echo State Network, Stephen M. Ruffing, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2009

Short To Medium Range Time Series Prediction Of Solar Irradiance Using An Echo State Network, Stephen M. Ruffing, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An Echo State Network (ESN) can make multi-step predictions since it can process temporal information without the training difficulties encountered by conventional recurrent neural networks. an ESN is applied in this paper to make multistep predictions of solar irradiance, 30 minutes to 270 minutes into the future. the ESN is trained and tested using two performance metrics (correlation coefficient and mean squared error) on meteorological and solar data recorded at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory Solar Radiation Research Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. When feedback of target outputs is utilized, an improvement is seen for the first performance metric, while no …

E-Content: Student Content Creators: Convergence Of Literacies, Joan K. Lippincott

Faculty Journal Articles

There is ample evidence that students are creating all types of digital content and disseminating it via the Internet. When they graduate from universities and colleges and enter such fields as business, education, government, medicine, research, or the arts, they will continue to produce digital content. Employers often select new graduates for positions in the expectation that they will take on technology-intensive assignments related to the Web presence of the organization. While in school, many students create digital materials without guidance from faculty, information technologists, or librarians, but such products are typically recreational and do not have the hallmarks of …

Goosetown: Reconstructing An Akron Neighborhood, Joyce Dyer Dec 2009

Goosetown: Reconstructing An Akron Neighborhood, Joyce Dyer

University of Akron Press Publications

Can the past be discovered? Are memories only someone else’s recollections? Can we draw out the shadows deep within the crevices of the brain?

Goosetown, once a physical location in Akron, Ohio, and a place in Joyce Dyer’s childhood world, still lingers on the edge of the author’s perception. Dyer lived her first five years, the most significant five, some would say, in Goosetown, and had dismissed them as irrelevant because she couldn’t recover the images.

Years later, accompanied by her uncle, the self-proclaimed “Mayor of Goosetown,” the odd couple travels to unearth the lost years. Together they search for …

Prohibits Voting By Those Who Fail To Provide Government-Issued Identification. Adds Additional Absentee Voting Requirements. Initiative Statute

Initiatives

Prohibits citizens from casting a regular ballot at the polls unless they present a government-issued photo-identification card. Restricts voting by citizens who fail to present government-issued photo-identification to casting only provisional ballots. Invalidates both mail-in and provisional ballots unless an elections official verifies that the last four digits of the voter’s government-issued identification number on the ballot envelope are consistent with voter’s corresponding government records. Establishes that ballots from absent military personnel are timely postmarked by election day. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local government: Some increased government costs …

Sustainability In Practice: A Study Of The Sustainable Behaviors Of Students At The Univeristy Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Audrey Glor

Honors Theses

Sustainable behaviors, such as recycling, are increasingly important as the world's population continues to rise. While many attempts have been made at various institutions, recycling on a grand scale has yet to become a social reality. This study was designed to look at the three broad factors influencing an individual's recycling behavior: social pressure, knowledge base, and convenience. It was hypothesized that social pressure would have the greatest influence on an individual's recycling behavior, while not overlooking the importance of the other two factors. A questionnaire was employed to collect data from a sample population at the University of Tennessee …

Involving Youth In Community Emergency Preparedness: Impacts Of A Multistate Initiative, Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black Dec 2009

Involving Youth In Community Emergency Preparedness: Impacts Of A Multistate Initiative, Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black

Journal of Youth Development

The National Preparedness Guidelines (2007) state, “as uniformed responders account for less than 1% of the total U.S. population, it is clear that citizens must be better prepared, trained, and practiced on how best to take care of themselves and assist others in those first crucial hours during and after a catastrophic incident.” This is increasingly more evident due to recent disasters such as hurricane Katrina. The Alert, Evacuate and Shelter (AES) program identified and trained youth/adult teams to use geospatial technology to map shelter locations and evacuation routes. Training began with team building activities to strengthen and build youth/adult …
