Modeling And Analysis Of Noise Coupling In Multilayer Power/Ground Planes, Gang Feng Jan 2009

Modeling And Analysis Of Noise Coupling In Multilayer Power/Ground Planes, Gang Feng

Doctoral Dissertations

"The simultaneous switching noise (SSN) in a multilayer power delivery network (PDN) is a critical problem in high-speed printed circuit board (PCB) designs. Full-wave methods are not computationally efficient for analyzing PCB structures normally with a multi-scale nature. In this thesis, a model for multilayer power/ground planes is proposed using basic plane pair blocks derived from the cavity model combined with the segmentation technique. Vias and other circuit elements can further be easily integrated in the multilayer plane model. As a result, the entire PDN model is much more computationally efficient than full-wave methods. Experimental and numerical results have validated …

Applications Of Sensor Arrays In Acoustic And Seismic Signal Processing, Peng Xie Jan 2009

Applications Of Sensor Arrays In Acoustic And Seismic Signal Processing, Peng Xie

Doctoral Dissertations

"This work investigates the applications of sensor arrays in the areas of acoustic and seismic signal processing. It comprises three papers.

The first paper explores the problem of blind source separation (BSS) for convolutive acoustic signals. It concentrates on the well known permutation and amplitude problems in frequency-domain BSS and proposes a new hybrid approach to solve them. This approach connects the separation processes across all frequency bins, and relies on a novel permutation control unit. This framework could greatly reduce computational load and improve separation performance. Synthesized and real-world experiments demonstrate its efficiency.

The second paper investigates a new …

On Capturing The Possible Significance Of Institutional Design And Ethos, Peter L. Strauss Jan 2009

On Capturing The Possible Significance Of Institutional Design And Ethos, Peter L. Strauss

Faculty Scholarship

At a recent conference, a new judge from one of the federal courts of appeal – for the United States, the front line in judicial control of administrative action-made a plea to the lawyers in attendance. Please, he urged, in briefing and arguing cases reviewing agency actions, help us judges to understand their broader contexts. So often, he complained, the briefs and arguments are limited to the particular small issues of the case. We get little sense of the broad context in which it arises – the agency responsibilities in their largest sense, the institutional issues that may be at …

Contracting For Innovation: Vertical Disintegration And Interfirm Collaboration, Ronald J. Gilson, Charles F. Sabel, Robert E. Scott Jan 2009

Contracting For Innovation: Vertical Disintegration And Interfirm Collaboration, Ronald J. Gilson, Charles F. Sabel, Robert E. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

Rapidly innovating industries are not behaving the way theory expects. Conventional industrial organization theory predicts that, when parties in a supply chain have to make transaction-specific investments, the risk of opportunism will drive them away from contracts and toward vertical integration. Despite the conventional theory, however, contemporary practice is moving in the other direction. Instead of vertical integration, we observe vertical disintegration in a significant number of industries, as producers recognize that they cannot themselves maintain cutting-edge technology in every field required for the success of their products. In doing this, the parties are developing forms of contracting beyond the …

Heller High Water? The Future Of Originalism, Jamal Greene Jan 2009

Heller High Water? The Future Of Originalism, Jamal Greene

Faculty Scholarship

Has originalism won? It's easy to think so, judging from some of the reaction to the Supreme Court's recent decision in District of Columbia v. Heller. The Heller Court held that the District of Columbia could neither ban possession of handguns nor require that all other firearms be either unloaded and disassembled or guarded by a trigger lock. In finding for the first time in the Court's history that a gun control law violated the Second Amendment, Justice Scalia's opinion for the 5-4 majority appeared to be a sterling exemplar of originalism, the method of constitutional interpretation that he …

Design Complexity And Its Relationship With Sn Ratio - Larger-The-Better Characteristics With Finite Target, Naresh K. Sharma, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Sonali Sharma Jan 2009

Design Complexity And Its Relationship With Sn Ratio - Larger-The-Better Characteristics With Finite Target, Naresh K. Sharma, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Sonali Sharma

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concept of complexity is an essential constituent of axiomatic design and axiomatic quality. a reciprocal transformation is used to compute quality loss for larger-the-better performance characteristics in Taguchi's methodology. El-Haik's work on connecting robust design and axiomatic design with the help of mathematical relationships also considers the reciprocal methodology for larger-the-better functional requirements. Because of reciprocal transformation axiomatic complexity formulation for larger-the-better performance characteristics is different from that for smaller-the-better and nominal-the-best characteristics. Second, the signal-to-noise ratio based on complexity is also different for the same reason. This paper shows that a simple linear transformation in which a finite …

Predicting Gas Mileage Using The T-Method, Parthiv Shah, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Vivek Jikar

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The T-method is a technique developed by Genichi Taguchi to calculate an overall prediction based on the signal-to-noise ratio without the use of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization. the Taguchi methods, also known as Robust Design principles, are used for optimization through planning, conducting, and evaluating the results of experiments to determine the best levels of control factors. the primary goal of Robust Design is to minimize variance in the presence of noise factors to achieve a robust process. This paper outlines the T-method steps using a forecasting case study to calculate miles per gallon for vehicles with a univariate response to illustrate …

On The Origins Of Originalism, Jamal Greene Jan 2009

On The Origins Of Originalism, Jamal Greene

Faculty Scholarship

For all its proponents' claims of its necessity as a means of constraining judges, originalism is remarkably unpopular outside the United States. Recommended responses to judicial activism in other countries more typically take the form of minimalism or textualism. This Article considers why. Ifocus particular attention on the political and constitutional histories of Canada and Australia, nations that, like the United States, have well-established traditions of judicial enforcement of a written constitution, and that share with the United States a common law adjudicative norm, but whose political and legal cultures less readily assimilate judicial restraint to constitutional historicism. I offer …

New Techniques For Measuring Impedance Characteristics Of Three-Phase Ac Power Systems, Yakov A. Familiant, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Naval ships as well as aerospace power systems are incorporating an increasing amount of power electronic switching sources and loads. Although these power-electronics-Based components provide exceptional performance, they are prone to instability due to their constant power characteristics that lead to negative impedance. When designing these systems, integrators must consider the impedance versus frequency at a power system interface (which designates source and load). Stability criteria have been developed in terms of source and load impedance for both dc and ac power systems, and it is often helpful to have techniques for impedance measurement. for dc power systems, the measurement …

V2g Scheduling - A Modern Approach To Unit Commitment With Vehicle-To-Grid Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a new approach to Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) scheduling. V2G technology has drawn great interest in the recent years. It can efficiently manage load fluctuation, peak load; however, it increases spinning reserves and reliability. V2G can reduce dependencies on small expensive units in the existing power systems as energy storage that can decrease running costs. Success of the V2G research depends on efficient scheduling of grid able vehicles in limited parking lots. as number of grid able vehicles in V2G is much higher than small units of existing systems, unit commitment (UC) with V2G is more complex than basic …

Improved Frequency Domain Channel Estimation And Equalization For Mimo Wireless Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces an improved frequency domain channel estimation method based on interpolation vectors for single carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) with the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) scheme. the proposed algorithm is derived by employing the least squares (LS) criterion, and a specified application for the wide sense stationary uncorrelated scattering (WSSUS) Rayleigh fading channel is presented. the channel frequency domain responses estimated at two adjacent pilot blocks are used to track the time-variant channel information, which can effectively improve the accuracy of channel estimation without significantly increasing complexity. Maximum mean square error (MMSE) frequency domain equalization based on the estimated …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Analytical models for vias and traces are presented for simulation of multilayer interconnects at the package and printed circuit board levels. Vias are modeled using an analytical formulation for the parallel-plate impedance and capacitive elements, whereas the trace-via transitions are described by modal decomposition. It is shown that the models can be applied to efficiently simulate a wide range of structures. Different scenarios are analyzed including thru-hole and buried vias, power vias, and coupled traces routed into different layers. by virtue of the modal decomposition, the proposed method is general enough to handle structures with mixed reference planes. for the …

Global warming or the increase of the surface and atmospheric temperatures of the Earth, is increasingly discernible in the polar, sub-polar and major land glacial areas. The Himalayan and Tibetan Plateau Glaciers, which are the largest glaciers outside of the Polar regions, are showing a large-scale decrease of snow cover and an extensive glacial retreat. These glaciers such as Siachen and Gangotri are a major water resource for Asia as they feed major rivers such as the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra. Due to scarcity of ground measuring stations, the long-term observations of atmospheric temperatures acquired from the Microwave Sounding Unit …

Radiative Transfer Theory Applied To Ocean Bottom Modeling, Lisa M. Zurk, Jorge Quijano Jan 2009

Radiative Transfer Theory Applied To Ocean Bottom Modeling, Lisa M. Zurk, Jorge Quijano

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research on the propagation of acoustic waves in the ocean bottom sediment is of interest for active sonar applications such as target detection and remote sensing. The interaction of acoustic energy with the sea floor sublayers is usually modeled with techniques based on the full solution of the wave equation, which sometimes leads to mathematically intractable problems. An alternative way to model wave propagation in layered media containing random scatterers is the radiative transfer RT formulation, which is a well established technique in the electromagnetics community and is based on the principle of conservation of energy. In this paper, the …

Seven-Level Shunt Active Power Filter For High-Power Drive Systems, Peng Xiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Keith Corzine

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In high-power adjustable-speed motor drives, such as those used in electric ship propulsion systems, active filters provide a viable solution to mitigating harmonic related issues caused by diode or thyristor rectifier front-ends. To handle the large compensation currents and provide better thermal management, two or more paralleled semiconductor switching devices can be used. In this paper, a novel topology is proposed where two active filter inverters are connected with tapped reactors to share the compensation currents. The proposed active filter topology can also produce seven voltage levels, which significantly reduces the switching current ripple and the size of passive components. …

Thurgood Marshall was born 100 years ago into a country substantially divided along color lines. Marshall could not attend the University of Maryland School of Law because he was a Negro; he had trouble locating bathrooms that were not for “whites only.” Today, by contrast, we celebrate his life and accomplishments. Broadway has a play called Thurgood devoted to him; Baltimore/Washington International Airport is now BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport; even the University of Maryland renamed its law library in his honor. How did we come this far? How far do we still have to go? This article will consider what …

On Law And The Transition To Market: The Case Of Egypt, Lama Abu-Odeh Jan 2009

On Law And The Transition To Market: The Case Of Egypt, Lama Abu-Odeh

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

On the eve of independence from European colonialism, Egypt, like most other developing countries, undertook the project of de-linking itself from colonial economy by initiating domestic industrialization. The economic project known as Import Substitution Industrialization (“ISI”) was designed to liberate Egypt from raw commodity production--specifically, agricultural and mineral--servicing its previous colonial master, Great Britain. The engine of development would be an expanding public sector with nationalization and socialism as leitmotifs. In re-orienting the economy towards industrial production, Egypt hoped that the terms of trade with the international economy would significantly improve, thereby leading to an improvement in the living standards …

Mobile Speed Estimation For Broadband Wireless Communications Over Rician Fading Channels, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao Jan 2009

Mobile Speed Estimation For Broadband Wireless Communications Over Rician Fading Channels, Y. Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to estimate mobile speed for broadband wireless communications, which often encounter large number of fading channel taps causing severe intersymbol interference. Different from existing algorithms, which commonly assume that the fading channel coefficients are available for the speed estimators, the proposed algorithm is based on the received signals which contain unknown transmitted data, unknown frequency selective fading channel coefficients possibly including line-of-sight (LOS) components, and random receiver noise. Theoretical analysis is first carried out from the received signals, and a practical algorithm is proposed based on the analytical results. The algorithm employs …

Esd Current Spread Measurement Using Mesh Structure, Jae-Deok Lim, David Pommerenke, Jong-Sung Lee, Byong-Su Seol

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

If a PCB is struck by an ESD the injected current spreads throughout the PCB and returns via attached cables. During the current spread a variety of effects occur: The current spreads on the main ground and power planes, couples into traces and IC lead-frames and bond wires. Further, the PCB and the attached cables can form resonators causing ringing at their natural resonance frequencies. Understanding the current spread onto a PCB, best, also onto the traces is of great importance for gaining insight into ESD related problems on products. A test setup has been created that allows capturing and …
