Real Time Network Monitoring And Reporting System, Ricky Lee Massengale Sr. Dec 2009

Real Time Network Monitoring And Reporting System, Ricky Lee Massengale Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

With the ability of modern system developers to develop intelligent programs that allows machines to learn, modify and evolve themselves, current trends of reactionary methods to detect and eradicate malicious software code from infected machines is proving to be too costly. Addressing malicious software after an attack is the current methodology and should be a fallback approach. A modern approach should be to perpetually monitor the "enterprise network backbone" traffic and broadcast alerts while taking protective and pre-emptive measures, in the event that the traffic falls out of the bounds of pre-described norms. This work demonstrates that a synergy approach …

Variation In Age And Size At Maturity Of Lake Clark, Alaska Sockeye Salmon, Elizabeth B. Benolkin Dec 2009

Variation In Age And Size At Maturity Of Lake Clark, Alaska Sockeye Salmon, Elizabeth B. Benolkin

Fisheries

Salmon returning to Lake Clark, Alaska are a valuable subsistence, commercial and ecological resource, and are an important component of the larger Kvichak River escapement. Average escapement to the Kvichak River declined sharply during 1996-2005, prompting studies to investigate age and size at maturity, key life history traits of salmon linked to reproductive success and survival. We examined potential factors which may influence sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka age and size at maturity: spawning habitat and ocean environment, and examined variation in both traits over time. Sockeye salmon age and length at maturity differed among spawning locations and between brood years, …

Attenuation And Effectiveness Of Triclopyr And 2, 4-D Along Alaska Highway Rights-Of-Way In A Continental And A Coastal Subarctic Environment, David Barnes, Steve Seefeldt

AIDC Project Reports

After more than 20 years of only mechanical brush cutting, ADOT&PF evaluated the use of herbicides to manage vegetation that interferes with line-of-sight and maintenance of the roadway. While researchers have investigated herbicide effectiveness and attenuation in more-temperate climates, little study has focused on cold regions. The purpose of this project was to measure the effectiveness and attenuation of two different selective auxin-type herbicides, 2, 4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), and 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl acetic acid (triclopyr) in two subarctic climates; an extremely cold continental climate and a maritime climate. Conclusions from this study will aid the ADOT&PF in developing a plan for …

Modeling Discharge Using Hbv In The Imnavait Basin, North Slope, Alaska, Erin Dawn Trochim

Engineering

"The Arctic fresh water hydrological cycle is dominated by the melting of the seasonal snow cover and scattered precipitation events during the summer months. Predicting and characterizing potential hydrological response is an important component for engineering infrastructure for the appropriate climatic conditions. A semi-distributed Swedish conceptual model, HBV, has been applied to the Imnavait basin, located in the headwaters of the Kuparuk River on the North Slope of Alaska, to examine runoff during spring and summer months. The methodology began by analyzing the long-term climatic records of the Imnavait basin from 1986 to present. Initial calibration work was completed in …

Missing-Sensor-Fault-Tolerant Control For Sssc Facts Device With Real-Time Implementation, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald Harley Dec 2009

Missing-Sensor-Fault-Tolerant Control For Sssc Facts Device With Real-Time Implementation, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Control of power systems relies on the availability and quality of sensor measurements. However, measurements are inevitably subjected to faults caused by sensor failure, broken or bad connections, bad communication, or malfunction of some hardware or software. These faults in turn may cause the failure of power system controllers and consequently severe contingencies in the power system. to avoid such contingencies, this paper presents a sensor evaluation and (missing sensor) restoration scheme (SERS) by using auto-associative neural networks (auto-encoders) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). based on the SERS, a missing-sensor-fault-tolerant control (MSFTC) is developed for controlling a static synchronous series …

Channeling University-Based Sponsored Research Into Classroom Education, Badrul H. Chowdhury

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An important mission of university-Based research that often gets overlooked is the education component. based on the 2005-2006 Electric Power Engineering Education Resources report produced by PES, tens of millions of dollars' worth of research is being conducted annually by university faculty throughout North America. While such sponsored research almost always produces master's and Ph.D. dissertations, how much of that is channeled into creating a broader impact of educating undergraduate and graduate students is of concern to many sponsoring agencies. This paper presents a summary of panel presentations that describe and discuss examples of how some faculty members have brought …

Potentials And Promises Of Computational Intelligence For Smart Grids, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The electric power grid is a complex adaptive system under semi-autonomous distributed control. It is spatially and temporally complex, non-convex, nonlinear and non-stationary with a lot of uncertainties. the integration of renewable energy such as wind farms, and plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles further adds complexity and challenges to the various controllers at all levels of the power grid. a lot of efforts have gone into the development of a smart grid to align the interests of the electric utilities, consumers and environmentalists. Advanced computational methods are required for planning and optimization, fast control of power system elements, processing of …

Modeling Of Road Surface Condition Data For The Prediction Of Road Icing, Rupali Panda Dec 2009

Modeling Of Road Surface Condition Data For The Prediction Of Road Icing, Rupali Panda

Engineering

"Road icing is a common problem in cold regions, such as Alaska, where it poses serious threat to drivers and result in the disruption of transportation facilities. Road surface temperature (RST) is considered as the most crucial factor for icing conditions. The objective of this research is to predict RST in Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and three-layer back propagated Neural Network (NN) models using an optimum number of input variables (air temperature, dew point, relative humidity, wind gust, wind speed average, wind gust and wind directions). The data were analyzed using both randomized and chronological schemes. The results obtained from …

Heat Transfer Performance Of Nanofluids In Facility Heating Applications, Roy T. Strandberg Dec 2009

Heat Transfer Performance Of Nanofluids In Facility Heating Applications, Roy T. Strandberg

Engineering

"Nanofluids are a class of fluids comprised of a base fluid with nanoparticles in a colloidal suspension. These fluids have been shown to exhibit substantially higher thermal conductivity than their corresponding base fluids. Investigation is required to determine if this property may be exploited for the purpose of improving the performance of systems employing liquid heat transfer. Detailed analyses of CuO/60% ethylene glycol and Al₂O₃/60% ethylene glycol nanofluids' heat transfer properties were conducted to determine if they provide a net benefit in commercial facility heating systems. The analyses employed previously developed correlations for nanofluid thermophysical, fluid dynamic and heat transfer …

The Enemy Within: Microbes And Genes, Jamuna Vadivelu Dec 2009

The Enemy Within: Microbes And Genes, Jamuna Vadivelu

Archival Material (2000s)

Life as we know would not exist without bacteria to decompose waste and dead organisms. These bacteria ensure that the cycle of chemical exchange between organisms and their environment is continuous. The environment plays a critical role as a source for the emergence of pathogens and in the manifestation, course, and prognosis of human and animal diseases. Bacteria survive in a host of environmental niches such as soil, surface waters, plants, and in humans. In each of these niches they have specific roles in order to survive. Amongst environmental factors the physiological characteristics, temperature and humidity are critical. In the …
