A Dynamic Analysis: The Smile And Display Of Dentition During Speech, Allen Yaghoubzadeh Jan 2009

A Dynamic Analysis: The Smile And Display Of Dentition During Speech, Allen Yaghoubzadeh

SoDM Masters Theses

The objective of this retrospective study is to follow up on a previous Dynamic Smile Analysis and videographically analyze and develop averages for soft tissue norms with respect to the display of dentition during speech. These values would then be compared cross-sectionally across different age groups to see whether changes attributable to the aging process could be seen. A secondary objective was to compare averages for soft tissue norms in the display of dentition during speech to averages for soft tissue norms in the display of dentition during the smile. Materials and Method: Records from a previous study in which …

There remains much to be done to understand why, when, and under what conditions PLWH practice risk. substantial work also needs to be performed to design, implement, rigorously evaluate, and when effective, to disseminate widely, additional, evidencebased PfP interventions targeting diverse populations. Directing such interventions to populations of PLWH at greatest risk for transmission of HIV has the potential to yield significant impact on the pandemic.

The Dental School Applicant Pool And The Oral Healthcare Workforce, Lauren Mentasti Consonni Jan 2009

The Dental School Applicant Pool And The Oral Healthcare Workforce, Lauren Mentasti Consonni

UCHC Graduate School Masters Theses 2003 - 2010

One of the major challenges faced by the dental profession today is the recruitment of the most qualified dental school applicants who are capable of serving the nation’s future oral healthcare needs. The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) also recognizes this challenge, describing one of the three core functions of public health as “assuring that all populations have access to appropriate and cost effective care, including health promotion and disease prevention services.” To achieve this core function, the ASPH cites “a competent public health and personal healthcare workforce” as one of the ten essential public health services. Unfortunately, …

Microinjection Of Follicle-Enclosed Mouse Oocytes, Laurinda A. Jaffe, Rachael P. Norris, Marina Freudzon, William J. Ratzan, Lisa M. Mehlmann

UCHC Articles - Research

The mammalian oocyte develops within a complex of somatic cells known as a follicle, within which signals from the somatic cells regulate the oocyte, and signals from the oocyte regulate the somatic cells. Because isolation of the oocyte from the follicle disrupts these communication pathways, oocyte physiology is best studied within an intact follicle. Here we describe methods for quantitative microinjection of follicle-enclosed mouse oocytes, thus allowing the introduction of signaling molecules as well as optical probes into the oocyte within its physiological environment.

Incidence Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Associated Risk Factors In Hepatitis C-Related Advanced Liver Disease, Herbert L. Bonkovsky Jan 2009

Incidence Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Associated Risk Factors In Hepatitis C-Related Advanced Liver Disease, Herbert L. Bonkovsky

UCHC Articles - Research

Background and Aims

Although the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing in the United States, data from large prospective studies are limited. We evaluated the hepatitis C antiviral long-term treatment against cirrhosis (HALT-C) cohort for the incidence of HCC and associated risk factors.

Methods

HCV-positive patients with bridging fibrosis or cirrhosis that did not respond to peginterferon and ribavirin were randomized to groups that were given maintenance peginterferon for 3.5 years or no treatment. HCC incidence was determined by Kaplan-Meier analysis and baseline factors associated with HCC were analyzed by Cox regression.

Results

1,005 patients (mean age 50.2 years, …

Abstract Books

The College of Arts and Sciences proudly presents the seventh Book of Abstracts, highlighting the undergraduate scholarship conducted by students in collaboration with faculty mentors. This collection of abstracts represents many hours of scholarly activity in which students further developed their research, critical thinking, and writing skills and engaged in learning well beyond the classroom.

We congratulate the students and their faculty mentors for the quality of their work and their willingness to share it with the academic community through publications in refereed journals and presentations at regional, national, and international meetings. We also thank Evan Adams for editing the …

Conflicts Of Interest In Clinical Trial Recruitment & Enrollment: A Call For Increased Oversight, Valerie Gutmann Koch Jan 2009

Conflicts Of Interest In Clinical Trial Recruitment & Enrollment: A Call For Increased Oversight, Valerie Gutmann Koch

All Faculty Scholarship

This White Paper makes several policy recommendations to eliminate or manage the conflicts of interest that arise pursuant to the compensation arrangements between investigators and their institutions with drug and medical device manufacturers as they affect the recruitment and enrollment of human research subjects in clinical trials. The paper seeks to accomplish overall financial neutrality as between treatment and research, so that physicians' decisions regarding inclusion of patients in clinical trials is unaffected by their own financial interests.

Jesus The Christ As A Jun-Zi In Confucian Perspectives, John Changjin Bai Jan 2009

Jesus The Christ As A Jun-Zi In Confucian Perspectives, John Changjin Bai

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

In this paper, I seek to understand who Jesus is, through the lenses of “jun-zi 君子” (best translated as gentleman), a discussion and comparison between the concept of personhood of the jun-zi in Confucianism perspectives and the story of Jesus in the New Testament, I believe there is the possibility and implication to present an excellent image of Jesus the Christ as a jun-zi within Confucian personhood. Jesus, his ethical norm, high moral standard and religious life are like Confucian jun-zi. If we evangelize or evaluate the concepts of traditional Chinese Confucian jun-zi, Jesus would appear as a …

Cooperation In An Evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma On Networks With Degree-Degree Correlations, Stephen Devlin, T Treloar Jan 2009

Cooperation In An Evolutionary Prisoner's Dilemma On Networks With Degree-Degree Correlations, Stephen Devlin, T Treloar

Mathematics

We study the effects of degree-degree correlations on the success of cooperation in an evolutionary prisoner's dilemma played on a random network. When degree-degree correlations are not present, the standardized variance of the network's degree distribution has been shown to be an accurate analytical measure of network heterogeneity that can be used to predict the success of cooperation. In this paper, we use a local-mechanism interpretation of standardized variance to give a generalization to graphs with degree-degree correlations. Two distinct mechanisms are shown to influence cooperation levels on these types of networks. The first is an intrinsic measurement of base-line …

Evolution Of Cooperation Through The Heterogeneity Of Random Networks, Stephen Devlin, T Treloar Jan 2009

Evolution Of Cooperation Through The Heterogeneity Of Random Networks, Stephen Devlin, T Treloar

Mathematics

We use the standardized variance (nu_{st}) of the degree distribution of a random network as an analytic measure of its heterogeneity. We show that nu_{st} accurately predicts, quantitatively, the success of cooperators in an evolutionary prisoner's dilemma. Moreover, we show how the generating functional expression for nu_{st} suggests an intrinsic interpretation for the heterogeneity of the network that helps explain local mechanisms through which cooperators thrive in heterogeneous populations. Finally, we give a simple relationship between nu_{st} , the cooperation level, and the epidemic threshold of a random network that reveals an appealing connection between epidemic disease models and the …
