Four Decades Of Christmas Bird Counts In The Great Plains: Ornithological Evidence Of A Changing Climate, Paul A. Johnsgard, Thomas G. Shane Feb 2009

Four Decades Of Christmas Bird Counts In The Great Plains: Ornithological Evidence Of A Changing Climate, Paul A. Johnsgard, Thomas G. Shane

Papers in Ornithology

The rationale for this book has its origins in Terry Root’s 1988 Atlas of North American Wintering Birds, which provided a baseline landmark for evaluating the nationwide winter distributions of North American birds, using data from the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Counts birds from 1962-63 through 1971-72. Tom Shane and I speculated that an updated analysis might shed light on the possible effects of more recent climatic warming trends on bird migration and wintering patterns in the Great Plains, a region known for its severe winters and also one of our continent’s important migratory pathways and wintering regions. …

What Now? Not "Wow!": New Spoonerisms, Don Hauptman

Word Ways

Each August, cartoonist Jim Siergey and I collaborate on a collection of illustrated spoonerisms for Word Ways. Invariably, however, I have more specimens than space allows. And some don't readily lend themselves to visualization, requiring instead a verbal setup or a narrative or shaggy-dog-story form. Here then is a fresh batch, along with a few examples - that, to be strictly accurate, are not spoonerisms but word reversals.

Alcohol In Moderation, Cardioprotection And Neuroprotection : Epidemiological Considerations And Mechanistic Studies, Dipak K. Das Dr. Feb 2009

Alcohol In Moderation, Cardioprotection And Neuroprotection : Epidemiological Considerations And Mechanistic Studies, Dipak K. Das Dr.

UCHC Articles - Research

In contrast to many years of important research and clinical attention to the pathological effects of alcohol (ethanol) abuse, the past several decades have seen the publication of a number of peer-reviewed studies indicating beneficial effects of light-moderate, non-binge consumption of varied alcoholic beverages, as well as experimental demonstrations that moderate alcohol exposure can initiate typically cytoprotective mechanisms. A considerable body of epidemiology associates moderate alcohol consumption with significantly reduced risks of coronary heart disease and, albeit currently a less robust relationship, cerebrovascular (ischemic) stroke. Experimental studies with experimental rodent models and cultures (cardiac myocytes, endothelial cells) indicate that moderate …

Identification Of Novel Tumor Antigens With Patient-Derived Immune-Selected Antibodies, Daniel Rodriguez-Pinto, Martin P. Keough, Kathryn N. Phoenix, Frank Vumbaca, David K. K. Han, Kevin P. Claffey

UCHC Articles - Research

The identification of tumor antigens capable of eliciting an immune response in vivo may be an effective method to identify therapeutic cancer targets. We have developed a method to identify such antigens using frozen tumor-draining lymph node samples from breast cancer patients. Immune responses in tumor-draining lymph nodes were identified by immunostaining lymph node sections for B-cell markers (CD20&CD23) and Ki67 which revealed cell proliferation in germinal center zones. Antigen-dependent somatic hypermutation (SH) and clonal expansion (CE) were present in heavy chain variable (VH) domain cDNA clones obtained from these germinal centers, but not from Ki67 negative germinal centers. Recombinant …

Increasing The Enrolment Of Women In It At Fanshawe College, Karen Macintyre

Faculty and Staff Publications - CRI

Women comprise over 50% of the population of Canada. At Fanshawe College, where I am a female professor in the School of Information Technology, approximately 95% of the students in my classes are male. The number of women enrolling in Information Technology (IT) programs has been declining in recent years, although enrolment of females in other post-secondary programs is increasing. Technology is becoming ever-present in the lives of young people, including girls and young women, yet education and employment in technology fields are not attracting women.

The Outcome Of Selenium And Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (Select) Reveals The Need For Better Understanding Of Selenium Biology, Dolph Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) was one of the largest human cancer prevention trials ever undertaken. Designed to examine the role of selenium and vitamin E in preventing prostate cancer (I) as a double-blind study, SELECT administered daily 200 micrograms of selenium in the form of pure L-selenomethionine, 400 IU of synthetic D,L-α-tocopherol (vitamin E), a combination of these two components, or a placebo to four approximately equally divided groups. SELECT enrollment was undertaken between August 22, 2001 and June 24, 2004, and involved 35.533 healthy males from more than 425 participating locations in …

The Functions And Values Of Fringing Salt Marshes In Northern New England, Usa, Pamela A. Morgan, David M. Burdick, Frederick T. Short Feb 2009

The Functions And Values Of Fringing Salt Marshes In Northern New England, Usa, Pamela A. Morgan, David M. Burdick, Frederick T. Short

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Although large salt marshes of the northeastern United States have been studied extensively, very little is known about the smaller, fringing marshes in this area, despite the fact that they are a common habitat type. We compared the functions and values of five fringing salt marshes (FM) to those of five meadow marshes (MM) along the southern Maine/New Hampshire coast. Specifically we compared their primary production, soil organic matter content, plant diversity, sediment trapping ability and wave dampening properties. Also explored were the relationships between these functions and several physical characteristics at each site, including soil salinity, percent surface slope, …

Mcwilliams, James Bellingham, Xavier Capet, Francisco Chavez, Jei-Kook Choi, Russ Davis, Jim Doyle, David M. Fratantoni, Peggy Li, Patrick Marchesiello, Mark A. Moline, Jeff Paduan, Steve Ramp

Biological Sciences

The development and implementation of a real-time ocean forecast system based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) off the coast of central California are described. The ROMS configuration consists of three nested modeling domains with increasing spatial resolutions: the US West coastal ocean at 15-km resolution, the central California coastal ocean at 5 km, and the Monterey Bay region at 1.5 km. All three nested models have 32 vertical sigma (or terrain-following) layers and were integrated in conjunction with a three-dimensional variational data assimilation algorithm (3DVAR) to produce snapshots of the ocean state every 6 h (the reanalysis) and …
