Rapid Headward Erosion Of Marsh Creeks In Response To Relative Sea Level Rise, Zoe J. Hughes, Duncan M. Fitzgerald, Carol A. Wilson, Steve C. Pennings, Kazimierz Wiçski, Amala Mahadevan

Faculty Publications

Tidal creeks in Cape Romain, South Carolina, are extending rapidly onto the established marsh platform producing an unusual morphology, which remains selfsimilar in time. A time-series of aerial photographs establishes that these channels are headward eroding at an approximate rate of 1.9 m/yr. The rapid rate of headward erosion suggests that the marsh platform is in disequilibrium and unable to keep pace with high local relative sea level rise (RSLR 〉3.2mm/yr) through accretionary processes. Biological feedbacks play a strong role in the morphological development of the creeks. Dieback of vegetation coupled with intense burrowing by crabs produces a bare and …

A Method For Digital Color Analysis Of Spalted Wood Using Scion Image Software, Sara Robinson, Peter Laks, Ethan J. Turnquist Feb 2009

A Method For Digital Color Analysis Of Spalted Wood Using Scion Image Software, Sara Robinson, Peter Laks, Ethan J. Turnquist

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Color analysis of spalted wood surfaces requires a non-subjective, repeatable method for determining percent of pigmentation on the wood surface. Previously published methods used human visual perception with a square grid overlay to determine the percent of surface pigmentation. Our new method uses Scion Image©, a graphical software program used for grayscale and color analysis, to separate fungal pigments from the wood background. These human interface processes render the wood block into HSV (hue, saturation, value, within the RGB color space), allowing subtle and drastic color changes to be visualized, selected and analyzed by the software. Analysis with Scion Image© …

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv/Aids-Related Knowledge And Risky Sexual Behavior In Jamaica, Christine Chung Feb 2009

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv/Aids-Related Knowledge And Risky Sexual Behavior In Jamaica, Christine Chung

Award Winning Geography Papers

Using the 2004 Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviour and Practices (KABP) national survey, this research investigates factors contributing to HIV/AIDS-related risky sexual behavior in Jamaica, using the theoretical underpinnings behind the concept of “risk” to elucidate the relative vulnerability of different demographic groups. In particular, how is risk defined and by whom, and how does this shape the risk environment for HIV/AIDS. The social construction of “risk” is explored as an act of translation of science, whose formalized and institutionalized meanings do not always match up to the individual’s perception of personal risk to HIV/AIDS. The disjunction between knowledge and actual behavioral …

Phytochemistry And Ethanopharmacological Studies On Rubia Cordifolia Linn. (Rubiaceae), M. Kannan, A.J.A.Ranjit Singh, M. Narayanan

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Ethanolic extracts of the leaves of Rubia cordifolia L. (Rubiaceae) (ERC) were investigated for their phytocompounds, in vitro and in vivo immunopharmacological properties. Immunomodulatory effects of this plant extract were proved in Cyclophosphamide (CP) -induced immunosuppressed animal models. Albino rats were treated with the aqueous extract of ERC and Cyclophosphamide. The Total count (TC) and Differential count (DC) of microphages and blood clotting assay were affected due to the suppressive effect of Cyclophosphamide. Administration of plant extract to CP- exposed animals resulted in enhanced immune responses.

Creb Mediates Prostaglandin F2alpha-Induced Muc5ac Overexpression, Wen-Cheng Chung, Seung-Hee Ryu, Hongxia Sun, Darryl C Zeldin, Ja Seok Koo

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Mucus secretion is an important protective mechanism for the luminal lining of open tubular organs, but mucin overproduction in the respiratory tract can exacerbate the inflammatory process and cause airway obstruction. Production of MUC5AC, a predominant gel-forming mucin secreted by airway epithelia, can be induced by various inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins. The two major prostaglandins involved in inflammation are PGE(2) and PGF(2alpha). PGE(2)-induced mucin production has been well studied, but the effect of PGF(2alpha) on mucin production remains poorly understood. To elucidate the effect and underlying mechanism of PGF(2alpha) on MUC5AC production, we investigated the signal transduction of PGF(2alpha) …

Professional Development Of Early Childhood Administrators Within A Professional Development School (Pds) Learning Community, Ginger L. Zierdt

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The traditional roles of early childhood educators have expanded to include management and leadership responsibilities. Through the stories and observations of early childhood administrators who participated in a Professional Learning Community within a Professional Development School (PDS) partnership, we discover new insights about the leadership and management skills needed to lead quality early learning programs. Given the importance of professional development for early childhood administrators, it is important to understand how this phenomenon is experienced. The purpose of this case study was to understand the nature of professional development for early childhood administrators within the context of a Professional Development …

Compositional Contrast Of Biological Materials In Liquids Using The Momentary Excitation Of Higher Eigenmodes In Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy, Xin Xu, John Melcher, Sudipta Basak, R. Reifenberger, Arvind Raman Feb 2009

Compositional Contrast Of Biological Materials In Liquids Using The Momentary Excitation Of Higher Eigenmodes In Dynamic Atomic Force Microscopy, Xin Xu, John Melcher, Sudipta Basak, R. Reifenberger, Arvind Raman

Birck and NCN Publications

Atomic Force microscope (AFM) cantilevers commonly used for imaging soft biological samples in liquids experience a momentary excitation of the higher eigenmodes at each tap. This transient response is very sensitive to the local sample elasticity under gentle imaging conditions because the higher eigenmode time period is comparable to the tip-sample contact time. By mapping the momentary excitation response, we demonstrate a new scanning probe spectroscopy capable of resolving with high sensitivity the variations in the elasticity of soft biological materials in liquids.

Validation Of Differential Gene Expression Algorithms: Application Comparing Fold Change Estimation To Hypothesis Testing, David R. Bickel, Corey M. Yanofsky Feb 2009

Validation Of Differential Gene Expression Algorithms: Application Comparing Fold Change Estimation To Hypothesis Testing, David R. Bickel, Corey M. Yanofsky

COBRA Preprint Series

Sustained research on the problem of determining which genes are differentially expressed on the basis of microarray data has yielded a plethora of statistical algorithms, each justified by theory, simulation, or ad hoc validation and yet differing in practical results from equally justified algorithms. The widespread confusion on which method to use in practice has been exacerbated by the finding that simply ranking genes by their fold changes sometimes outperforms popular statistical tests.

Algorithms may be compared by quantifying each method's error in predicting expression ratios, whether such ratios are defined across microarray channels or between two independent groups. For …

Efficient Gene Replacements In Toxoplasma Gondii Strains Deficient For Nonhomologous End Joining, Barbara A. Fox, Jessica G. Ristuccia, Jason P. Gigley, David J. Bzik Feb 2009

Efficient Gene Replacements In Toxoplasma Gondii Strains Deficient For Nonhomologous End Joining, Barbara A. Fox, Jessica G. Ristuccia, Jason P. Gigley, David J. Bzik

Dartmouth Scholarship

A high frequency of nonhomologous recombination has hampered gene targeting approaches in the model apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. To address whether the nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) DNA repair pathway could be disrupted in this obligate intracellular parasite, putative KU proteins were identified and a predicted KU80 gene was deleted. The efficiency of gene targeting via double-crossover homologous recombination at several genetic loci was found to be greater than 97% of the total transformants in KU80 knockouts. Gene replacement efficiency was markedly increased (300- to 400-fold) in KU80 knockouts compared to wild-type strains. Target DNA flanks of only approximately 500 bp were …
