Genotypic Confirmation Of Transimmunization-Induced Dendritic Cell Maturation, Kristin Elizabeth Hoffmann Feb 2009

Genotypic Confirmation Of Transimmunization-Induced Dendritic Cell Maturation, Kristin Elizabeth Hoffmann

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Transimmunization (TI), a novel modification of the widely used immunotherapy extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP), induces conversion of processed monocytes into cells expressing phenotypic and functional features of dendritic antigen presenting cells (DC). To further characterize TI-induced DC, we analyzed differential gene expression in the monocyte/DC population after TI treatment. Because ECP, the therapy upon which TI is based, has the unique capacity to induce both anti-cancer immune responses in cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) patients and tolerogenic responses in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), we studied TI-induced gene expression changes in both of these patient populations as well as in healthy normal control …

The Role Of Neuroinflammation In Regulating The Age-Related Decline In Neurogenesis, Adam D. Bachstetter Feb 2009

The Role Of Neuroinflammation In Regulating The Age-Related Decline In Neurogenesis, Adam D. Bachstetter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Adult neurogenesis, is a lifelong process by which relatively few cells are added into two restricted regions of the brain. Integration of the cells into the existing neuronal circulatory, with the unique properties involved in the maturation of these cells, is possibly critical to the acquisition and retrieval of new memories. With the chronological aging of the organism a process of cellular senescence occurs throughout the body; a portion of which is independent of primary alterations to the stem cells; instead, it appears to be dependent on the environment where the cells reside, and is in part regulated by inflammation. …

Doctoral Theses

The World Wide Web [12] (usually referred to as the Web, WWW or W3) is an enormous collection of data available over the Internet, which is a vast network of computers. It was created in the year 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, while he worked at CERN, Switzerland, and was made available over the Internet in 1991. The World Wide Web Consortium [136] authoritatively defines the Web as the universe of network-accessible information, the embodiment of human knowledge. The Web consists of objects, also called documents or pages in a generic sense, that are identified using a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), …

Polymer Microfluidic Devices For Bioanalysis, Xuefei Sun Feb 2009

Polymer Microfluidic Devices For Bioanalysis, Xuefei Sun

Theses and Dissertations

Polymeric microchips have received increasing attention in chemical analysis because polymers have attractive properties, such as low cost, ease of fabrication, biocompatibility and high flexibility. However, commercial polymers usually exhibit analyte adsorption on their surfaces, which can interfere with microfluidic transport in, for example, chemical separations such as chromatography or electrophoresis. Usually, surface modification is required to eliminate this problem. To perform stable and durable surface modification, a new polymer, poly(methyl methacrylate-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMAMMA) was prepared for microchip fabrication, which provides epoxy groups on the surface. Whole surface atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and in-channel ATRP approaches were employed to …

Incidence Of Salmonella On Reptiles In The Pet Trade, Casey R. Cain, Drew Tyre, Dennis Ferraro Feb 2009

Incidence Of Salmonella On Reptiles In The Pet Trade, Casey R. Cain, Drew Tyre, Dennis Ferraro

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Reptiles are very common carriers of Salmonella and can be infected without showing any symptoms. Humans can contract reptile-associated Salmonellosis (RAS) by handling a Salmonella-infected reptile or any object contaminated by a Salmonella-infected reptile then failing to properly wash their hands, or by allowing reptiles to contaminate areas of food preparation.

This study tested reptiles for Salmonella in four Nebraska pet shops in March of 2007 to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella in captive reptiles in Nebraska. Of 80 pet reptiles tested, 53.8% (43) yielded Salmonella, which is much higher than the 6.6% (12 of 182) prevalence of Salmonella in …

Redox Control Of The Dna Damage-Inducible Protein Ding Helicase Activity Via Its Iron-Sulfur Cluster, Binbin Ren, Xuewu Duan, Huangen Ding Feb 2009

Redox Control Of The Dna Damage-Inducible Protein Ding Helicase Activity Via Its Iron-Sulfur Cluster, Binbin Ren, Xuewu Duan, Huangen Ding

Faculty Publications

The Escherichia coli DNA damage-inducible protein DinG, a member of the superfamily 2 DNA helicases, has been implicated in the nucleotide excision repair and recombinational DNA repair pathways. Combining UV-visible absorption, EPR, and enzyme activity measurements, we demonstrate here that E. coli DinG contains a redox-active [4Fe-4S] cluster with a mid-point redox potential (Em) of -390 ± 23 mV (pH 8.0) and that reduction of the [4Fe-4S] cluster reversibly switches off the DinG helicase activity. Unlike the [4Fe-4S] cluster in E. coli dihydroxyacid dehydratase, the DinG [4Fe-4S] cluster is stable, and the enzyme remains fully active after exposure to 100-fold …

Consumerism And The Transition To Motherhood : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Burnett Muzzy Feb 2009

Consumerism And The Transition To Motherhood : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Burnett Muzzy

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This flexible method study was undertaken to explore the role of consumerism in facilitating women's transition to motherhood. It was informed by 12 women who were expecting their first child and in the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Participants were volunteers from the Boston area who agreed to be interviewed about their experience of the transition to motherhood. The results indicate that women felt acquiring items for use with their babies served several functions. Specifically, women reported an increased sense of realness regarding the impending birth; feeling more prepared in advance of the baby's arrival; a sense of relief …

In Search Of Our Brains: On Teaching "Proust Was A Neuroscientist" By Jonah Lehrer, Marianne Rogoff Feb 2009

In Search Of Our Brains: On Teaching "Proust Was A Neuroscientist" By Jonah Lehrer, Marianne Rogoff

Collected Faculty Scholarship

"I have always wanted to teach a semester of freshman English using a single text, moving students via rich allusions out beyond it for further reading according to their individual interests. Proust Was a Neuroscientist by Jonah Lehrer is a collection of essays linking contemporary findings in neuroscience with visionary knowledge dreamed up by writers and artists a hundred years ago. Concepts like Walt Whitman's poetic "body electric" and Virginia Woolf's psychological "stream of consciousness" are proven to have physical origins in our brains and bodies. I created a whole course around the book in Fall '08 at California College …
