Educational And Behavioral Interventions To Reduce Isocyanate Exposure In Auto Body Shops, Liza Goldman Huertas Mar 2009

Educational And Behavioral Interventions To Reduce Isocyanate Exposure In Auto Body Shops, Liza Goldman Huertas

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Isocyanates are a major cause of occupational asthma. To reduce worker exposure to isocyanates, we conducted a prospective field intervention study of educational and behavioral feedback interventions. 14 auto body shops were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups; 103 workers from these shops consented to study participation. Original surveys of exposure-related Knowledge and Attitudes and Self-Reported Behavior were administered and behaviors were observed at baseline, 6, and 12 months. The intervention group participated in the full intervention with behavioral feedback continued throughout the first 6 months; the control group had no formal interventions until, at 6 months, they received …

Facilitating Higher Education For Poor Single Mothers, Marsha R. Miskin Mar 2009

Facilitating Higher Education For Poor Single Mothers, Marsha R. Miskin

Theses and Dissertations

Data for this study comes from the Single Mom Initiative conducted by BYU Self-reliance Center. This study uses the Life Course perspective to examine how getting at least a bachelor's degree before or after becoming a single mother affects income levels. There was no significant difference in getting a degree before or after becoming a single mother on income levels. The study also shows how families, institutions, and governments can help single mothers. The results indicate that the number of children, employment status, and government educational assistance positively affect single mother's current enrollment in college, while receiving food stamps negatively …

Reproductive Desires And Intentions Among Hiv-Infected Individuals In Chennai, India, Elizabeth Houle Mar 2009

Reproductive Desires And Intentions Among Hiv-Infected Individuals In Chennai, India, Elizabeth Houle

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Despite the personal and cultural importance of childbearing in India, limited information exists on the extent of childbearing desires and intentions among HIV-infected individuals in this setting. The purpose of this study was to measure the extent of childbearing desires among HIV-infected individuals in Chennai, India, thereby testing the hypothesis that HIV significantly influences the desire to have children. Three hundred HIV-infected individuals were interviewed about childbearing desires and intentions during routine visits for HIV care at an HIV specialty care clinic in Chennai, South India. Sixteen percent of participants expressed desire for childbearing, and 9% expressed intention to have …

A Morphological Analysis Of A "Confounding" Population Of Castanea In Northwest Georgia, Jamie Dinkins Mar 2009

A Morphological Analysis Of A "Confounding" Population Of Castanea In Northwest Georgia, Jamie Dinkins

Honors Theses

Two species of Castanea Mill. (Fagacae) are native to North America: the tall, forest-type Castanea dentata (Marsh.) Borkh. and the smaller, shrubbier Castanea pumila (L.) Miller. There are two varieties of C. pumila: Castanea pumila var. pumila, and Castanea pumila var. ozarkensis (Johnson, 1988). In the early 1900s, chestnut blight caused by Cryphonectria parasitica (Murr.) Barr. reduced C. dentata to stumps and sprouts and severely diminished the abundance of both subspecies of C. pumila. Because Castanea species can apparently interbreed, restoration efforts have been complicated by possible hybridization between the two now shrubby species. One of these putative hybrid and …

Meltwater And Abrupt Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Clare C. Williams Mar 2009

Meltwater And Abrupt Climate Change During The Last Deglaciation: A Gulf Of Mexico Perspective, Clare C. Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

During the last deglaciation, Greenland ice core records exhibit multiple, high frequency climate events including the Oldest Dryas, Bølling-Allerød and Younger Dryas, which may be linked to meltwater routing of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). Previous studies show episodic meltwater input, via the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) several thousand years before the onset of the Younger Dryas until ~13.0 kcal (thousand calendar) yrs, when meltwater may have switched to an eastern spillway, reducing thermohaline circulation (THC). Data from laminated Orca Basin in the GOM, constrained by 34 Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) 14C dates, provide the …

Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels Mar 2009

Constructions Of Narrative Identities Of Women Political Candidates, Amy E. Daniels

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

I evaluate the ways in which newspaper articles constructed the gendered cultural and personal narratives of a woman Presidential and a woman Vice-Presidential candidate during the 2008 Presidential Election season. Drawing upon West and Zimmerman's "Doing Gender" (1987) that explains gender is performed constantly throughout life, I assess the stories told about each candidate and the way she performed gender. There are two different types of stories created. The first is a personal narrative which tells the story of each individual candidate, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. The second is a cultural narrative which tells the story of a dis-embodied …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of Strategic Planning In Higher Education: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Institutions, Eric S. Burgess Mar 2009

Stakeholder Perceptions Of Strategic Planning In Higher Education: A Comparative Case Study Of Two Institutions, Eric S. Burgess

Theses and Dissertations

This research study assesses the effectiveness of the strategic planning initiatives at two small public institutions of higher education in the Midwestern United States that have similar histories, demographics, and missions. It is a comparative case study that reviews, analyzes, and compares stakeholder perceptions of the strategic planning processes at the selected institutions. Following a thorough literature review, qualitative methods of observation, interviewing, and grounded theory development are utilized to answer the following research question: What are the faculty and administrator perceptions of strategic planning as it occurred at the selected institutions? The study provides significant evidence verifying how stakeholders …

The Role Of Src Suppressed C-Kinase Substrate In Primary Sensory Neurons, Christopher P. Irmen Mar 2009

The Role Of Src Suppressed C-Kinase Substrate In Primary Sensory Neurons, Christopher P. Irmen

Theses and Dissertations

SSeCKS (src suppressed C kinase substrate) is an A kinase anchoring protein that has been localized in the peripheral and central nervous systems. Previous studies have suggested that SSeCKS is restricted to a population of small-diameter neurons in the dorsal root ganglia whose central axons terminate in superficial laminae of the spinal cord dorsal horn. This SSeCKS containing population displayed labeling characteristics consistent with non-peptidergic C-fibers and occasionally contained nerve growth factor receptors. The present study investigated the hypothesis that SSeCKS is found in a subgroup of primary sensory neurons that are involved in transmission of nociceptive stimuli. This was …

Neurotensin Regulates Gabaergic Activity In The Ca1 Region Of Rat Hippocampus, Shanshan Li Mar 2009

Neurotensin Regulates Gabaergic Activity In The Ca1 Region Of Rat Hippocampus, Shanshan Li

Theses and Dissertations

Neurotensin (NT) is a tridecapeptide that interacts with three NT receptors, NTS1, NTS2 and NTS3. NT has been reported to modulate GABA release in various brain regions under both physiological and pathological conditions. A beneficial role for NT in correcting GABA dysfunction/deficiency has been implied. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying NT-induced increases in GABAergic function remain ill-defined. Here, we first examined the effects of NT on GABAergic transmission and the underlying cellular and signaling mechanisms in the hippocampus of juvenile rats. We found that NT dose-dependently increased sIPSC frequency in CA1 pyramidal neurons without affecting the amplitude of …

New Strategies For The Release Of Acids And Carbonyl Compounds From Photoremovable Protecting Groups, Promise K. Yong Mar 2009

New Strategies For The Release Of Acids And Carbonyl Compounds From Photoremovable Protecting Groups, Promise K. Yong

Theses and Dissertations

Photoremovable protecting groups (PRPGs) have found extensive applications in chemical synthesis, biology/biomedicine, and photoacid-based lithography. For most applications in biomedical settings, the use of visible wavelengths is desirable in order to avoid damage from UV-radiation. To meet the demands of the numerous applications, there is continued interest in the development of PRPGs, as the current pool is limited. 1-[2-(2-Hydroxyalkyl)phenyl]ethanone (HAPE), a new photoremovable protecting group for carboxylic acids is introduced. It was synthesized from commercially available 2'-bromoacetophenone and used to protect carboxylic acids as HAPE esters in good yields. Photolysis of HAPE esters was performed with 320 nm light and …

The Genetic Basis Of Evolved Differences In Gene Expression In Fundulus Heteroclitus, Cinda Pitts Scott Mar 2009

The Genetic Basis Of Evolved Differences In Gene Expression In Fundulus Heteroclitus, Cinda Pitts Scott

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation explores the genetic basis of gene expression in Fundulus heteroclitus by focusing on the role of the environment and its effects on gene expression and by making direct estimates of heritability using cDNA microarrays. The second chapter describes the utility of F. heteroclitus cDNA microarrays for studies of F. heteroclitus which seek to understand the genetic variation in gene expression. Measurements of mRNA fluorescence and concentration as well as differences in sample preparation and sampling of blood from a single individual over time demonstrate that F. heteroclitus cDNA microarrays are quantitative, reproducible and consistent. The third chapter examines …

Multi-Species Influenza Models With Recombination, Brian John Coburn Mar 2009

Multi-Species Influenza Models With Recombination, Brian John Coburn

Open Access Dissertations

Avian influenza strains have been proven to be highly virulent in human populations, killing approximately 70 percent of infected individuals. Although the virus is able to spread across species from birds-to-humans, some strains, such as H5N1, have not been observed to spread from human-to-human. Pigs are capable of infection by both avian and human strains and seem to be likely candidates as intermediate hosts for co-infection of the inter-species strains. A co-infected pig potentially acts as a mixing vessel and could produce a new strain as a result of a recombination process. Humans could be immunologically naive to these new …
