Theoretical Analysis Of Alendronate And Risedronate Effects On Canine Vertebral Remodeling And Microdamage, Xiang Wang, Antonia M. Erickson, Matthew R. Allen, David B. Burr, R. Bruce Martin, Scott J. Hazelwood

Biomedical Engineering

Bisphosphonates suppress bone remodeling activity, increase bone volume, and significantly reduce fracture risk in individuals with osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. The objectives of the current study were to develop a mathematical model that simulates control and 1 year experimental results following bisphosphonate treatment (alendronate or risedronate) in the canine fourth lumbar vertebral body, validate the model by comparing simulation predictions to 3 year experimental results, and then use the model to predict potential long term effects of bisphosphonates on remodeling and microdamage accumulation. To investigate the effects of bisphosphonates on bone volume and microdamage, a mechanistic biological model …

Ecological Facilitation May Drive Major Evolutionary Transitions, Zaal Kikvidze, Ragan M. Callaway May 2009

Ecological Facilitation May Drive Major Evolutionary Transitions, Zaal Kikvidze, Ragan M. Callaway

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

There is a growing consensus among ecologists that ecological facilitation comprises a historically overlooked but crucial suite of biotic interactions. Awareness of such positive interactions has recently led to substantial modifications in ecological theory. In this article we suggest how facilitation may be included in evolutionary theory. Natural selection based on competition provides a conceptually complete paradigm for speciation, but not for major evolutionary transitions-the emergence of new and more complex biological structures such as cells, organisms, and eusocial populations. We find that the successful theories developed to solve these specific problematic transitions show a consistent pattern: they focus on …

Emotions As An Intervening Variable In The Creative Process, Diego E. Uribe Larach May 2009

Emotions As An Intervening Variable In The Creative Process, Diego E. Uribe Larach

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This thesis explored the impact that emotionally laden stimuli had on individuals’ creative process and creative products as assessed by independent domain experts. Sixtyfive undergraduate students were randomly separated into three treatment conditions and instructed to create an artistic collage composition on the theme of New Year’s Eve. Two of the treatment groups received, in addition to the general instructions set, a text based priming stimulus that was either an emotionally laden narrative or factual narrative about New Year’s Eve. All participants were asked to complete a task reflection questionnaire and the FourSight cognitive style measure. Using the Consensual Assessment …

A Place Like This: An Environmental Justice History Of The Owens Valley - Water In Indigenous, Colonial, And Manzanar Stories, Monica Embrey

Pomona Senior Theses

This text provides an environmental justice analysis of the stories of the people who lived in the Owens Valley, who watered its land and cultivated its crops—pine trees, apple trees, and kabocha alike. Telling the personal stories of challenge and resistance that manifested alongside the oppressive forces of military and state domination provides the opportunity to align forcibly relocated, exploited and incarcerated people’s struggles throughout time. This text starts with The Nü’ma Peoples who were the first humans to live in the Owens Valley and continues with the struggle for empire between rival colonial empires of agriculture and distant urban …

Use Of Cvm Stages In Assessment Of Young Orthodontic Patients To Estimate Growth Potential, David Justin Sander May 2009

Use Of Cvm Stages In Assessment Of Young Orthodontic Patients To Estimate Growth Potential, David Justin Sander

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Harnessing a patient’s growth to correct parasagittal discrepancies is an important part of Class II correction in orthodontic treatment; however, orthodontists rarely have the opportunity to choose when a patient is referred to them. Diagnostic records can assist the orthodontist in determining how much growth a patient has remaining. The purpose of this retrospective cephalometric study was to determine whether the amounts of in-treatment facial growth differ significantly by sex and by cervical vertebral maturation (CVM) stage. The sample consisted of 133 Class II division 1 patients from a single private practice office treated with a combination of a functional …

Marketability Of The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse-Family Certified Nurse Practitioner Profession, Mary Beth Krogstad May 2009

Marketability Of The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse-Family Certified Nurse Practitioner Profession, Mary Beth Krogstad

Theses and Dissertations

The literature reveals that advanced practice registered nurses who are family practice certified nurse practitioners (APRN-FNPs) are highly qualified primary care providers, yet some physicians feel that APRN-FNPs are in direct competition with them. It is important for the APRN-FNP to educate patients about their knowledge and skill capabilities. Government reimbursement and inconsistency of APRN-FNPs scope of practice is also a problem contributing to a lack of clarity in the APRN-FNP role. It is the responsibility of health care providers to be advocates for their own profession. Nurses must promote the role of advanced practice nursing in the workplace, community, …

Detection Of Escherichia Coli Using The Bacteriophage-Based Fluorescent Technique, Aung Khaing May 2009

Detection Of Escherichia Coli Using The Bacteriophage-Based Fluorescent Technique, Aung Khaing

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

The detection of viable Escherichia coli (E. coli) by the bacteriophage-based fluorescent technique using the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was tested in this project. EGFP, a mutant of green fluorescent protein (GFP), was used due to its high fluorescent efficiency compared to wild-type GFP. First, E. coli bacteria were cultured to the mid-exponential phase in the 2× YT medium and then they were infected with the M13 bacteriophages containing the EGFP gene. Infected bacteria were incubated for different time intervals, and the expression of EGFP on the E. coli membrane was tested by the PerkinElmer LS 55 Luminescence Spectrometer, …

The Effect Of Natural Compounds On Lymphocyte And Osteoblast Function, Donielle Ford May 2009

The Effect Of Natural Compounds On Lymphocyte And Osteoblast Function, Donielle Ford

Theses (Pre-2016)

Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States, and although cost effective interventions are available to reduce the burden of arthritis, they are currently underused. The goal of this project is to study and test natural compounds on their selective ability to improve lymphocyte function in lymphocyte function deficit model such as microgravity. A model such as this would provide a test bed to test different compounds on diseases involving osteoblast and immune dysfunction and identify biomakers in inflammation. The hypothesis of this project is that the effects of natural compounds on lymphocytes and osteoblast in modeled …

A Postmodern Story Of Meaning Making In A Residence Life Organization: A Transformational Change Process, Pamela Graglia May 2009

A Postmodern Story Of Meaning Making In A Residence Life Organization: A Transformational Change Process, Pamela Graglia

Dissertations

Current research on change and transformation in higher education frequently relies on models which “clean up” the messy process of creating change into easily consumed lists of strategies. However these reductive strategies may be incomplete and alternatives which provide a more complex picture of the process of change have been suggested. Additionally, while sensemaking has been identified as critical to transformation, little research exists on meaning making during change processes in higher education settings.

Using social constructivist epistemology and a postmodern theoretical framework, the purpose of this qualitative inquiry was to explore how individuals in a higher education organization make …

Repulsion From Chemical Cues In Bufo Marinus (Cane Toad) Tadpoles, May 2009, Brittany Kolehmainen May 2009

Repulsion From Chemical Cues In Bufo Marinus (Cane Toad) Tadpoles, May 2009, Brittany Kolehmainen

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Predator-prey relationships have been studied relentlessly throughout all different taxa and systems. Larval anurans use the mode of chemosensory to detect and avoid predation. By exposing Bufo marinus tadpoles to a variety of natural chemicals (crushed conspecific larvae and metamorphs, and crushed annelid prey) a strong repulsion was demonstrated. Avoidance of the treatments verified that Bufo marinus tadpoles are sensitive to changes in the chemical make-up of their environment that could be caused by a predator in close proximity.

The mean Ecological Footprint in San Luis/ Cañitas was 8.12, Santa Elena/ Cerro Plano was 8.44, …

Captive Breeding Causes Small Body Size In Morpho Peleides Limpida (Nymphalidae: Morphinae), May 2009, Danny Goldish May 2009

Captive Breeding Causes Small Body Size In Morpho Peleides Limpida (Nymphalidae: Morphinae), May 2009, Danny Goldish

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Captive breeding has many positive implications in terms of conservation, but when practiced irresponsibly, can result in harmful consequences like inbreeding. Inbreeding has been shown to result in developmental instabilities like small body size and fluctuating asymmetry. In this study, I used small body size as a proxy for inbreeding by comparing measurements of the butterfly Morpho peleides limpida from wild and captive bred populations in terms of right forewing and right antennae length. Both measures of size were found to be larger in wild populations than captive populations. The greatest variation in the means was observed in female right …

Ant-Plant Coevolution: A Systematic Evaluation Of The Myrmelachista Haberi (Formicinae) And Ocotea Sp. (Lauraceae) Symbiosis, May 2009, Murtaza Paghdiwala May 2009

Ant-Plant Coevolution: A Systematic Evaluation Of The Myrmelachista Haberi (Formicinae) And Ocotea Sp. (Lauraceae) Symbiosis, May 2009, Murtaza Paghdiwala

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

I have evaluated the relationship between Myrmelachista haberi and Ocotea sp. (Los Llanos) to provide definitive evidence supporting the nature of the symbiosis and possible explanations in terms of co-evolutionary history. This interaction has been described in terms of benefit to the ant-domatia and nutrition via phloem-feeder farming – but benefits from the plants perspective have gone largely unstudied. McNett (2009) attempted to quantify the nature of the relationship by monitoring the uptake and movement of stable isotopes through each of the three participating species. This study found that nutrients do not transfer between the organisms, but left the possibilities …

A Study Of A Proposed Molecular Mechanism For Idiopathic Cases Of Hypertension: Detection Of Aldosterone-Receptor Complex At Period Homolog 1 (Per1) Promoter Using Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (Chip), Brent Colin Turner May 2009

A Study Of A Proposed Molecular Mechanism For Idiopathic Cases Of Hypertension: Detection Of Aldosterone-Receptor Complex At Period Homolog 1 (Per1) Promoter Using Chromatin Immunoprecipitation (Chip), Brent Colin Turner

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Hypertension severely affects the quality and quantity of life of those afflicted with the disease. In most cases where the cause is known, hypertension is due to an abnormally high sodium condition; however, the mechanism by which this occurs is unknown. This phenomenon is particularly detrimental to patients considered to be non-dippers, experiencing no nocturnal dip in blood pressure. A proposed molecular mechanism for the relationship between dipping and sodium concentration involves the regulation of the circadian gene Period 1 homolog (Per1) by aldosterone and was studied by using chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP). This technique results in an enrichment of the …

Rentabilidad Lechera 101: Calidad De La Leche Y Eficiencia Alimentaria, Alvaro Garcia May 2009

Rentabilidad Lechera 101: Calidad De La Leche Y Eficiencia Alimentaria, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives
