The B Street Residence Biophilic Design And The Colorado Home, Colin E. Fanning
The B Street Residence Biophilic Design And The Colorado Home, Colin E. Fanning
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The main focus of this Capstone has been exploratory—self-educational. After having learned, during the course of my studies in interior design, about the methodology of biophilic design (literally, “life-loving”)—which deals with the human psychological affinity for the natural world and attempting to reconcile that with the built environment, in order to create spaces that protect both body and mind—I wanted to experiment within that philosophy, to build my own biophilic design skills. This matched well with my long-running passion for sustainable design—the two methodologies are distinct but closely related, and when used in concert they represent a progressive vision for …

Identifying Proteins That Interact With The Novel Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Proteins Pdr19 And Pdr20 And Bioinformatic Characterization Of Genes Involved In Ttg Cellular Responses, Casey White
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
One of the most critical structures in cellular biology is the plasma membrane, due to its ability to respond to environmental stresses. Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a model, single-celled eukaryote that has been used to investigate many aspects of cell biology. A recent genetic screen in yeast for plasma membrane homeostatic proteins identified three related proteins of unknown molecular function that participate in these processes. These proteins, termed PDR19, PDR20, and PDR21 for Pleiotropic Drug Resistance, are each approximately one hundred amino acids in size and share a small conserved domain, namely the core sequence KITRYDL. In the case of PDR21 …
Evolution Of Craniofacial Architecture And Lateralization In Perissodini Scale-Eaters, Thomas A. Stewart
Evolution Of Craniofacial Architecture And Lateralization In Perissodini Scale-Eaters, Thomas A. Stewart
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
To understand the evolution of craniofacial asymmetry within the Perissodini tribe, a group of scale-eating fish found in Lake Tanganyika, we performed shape analysis on their craniofacial architecture, and applied a simple lever model to measure asymmetry in lower-jaw mechanics. We found that craniofacial asymmetries were the consequence of sided differences in size and shape of craniofacial elements, and that sided differences in shape predict the lateralization of force and speed of the lower jaw in derived species. Quantitative Trait Locus analysis in Lake Malawi cichlids identified a single locus of major effect for jaw laterality, the first genetic marker …
Molecular Analysis Of The Genetic Heterogeneity Between Primary And Recurrent Glioblastoma, Anushi Shah
Molecular Analysis Of The Genetic Heterogeneity Between Primary And Recurrent Glioblastoma, Anushi Shah
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Introduction: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the deadliest forms of brain cancer, and affects more than 18,000 new cases each year in the United States alone. The current standard of treatment for GBM includes surgical removal of the tumor, along with radiation and chemotherapy. Despite these treatments, recurrence of GBM is extremely common, and once it recurs, the life expectancy is measured in weeks or months. One of the reasons for the deadly nature of the recurrent GBM is thought to be selection for therapy-resistant tumor cells. In this project, we sought to characterize the molecular changes in recurrent …
The Evolution Of Skull Form And Function Among The East African Cichlids Of Lakes Malawi, Victoria, And Tanganyika, Alyssa Mcintyre
The Evolution Of Skull Form And Function Among The East African Cichlids Of Lakes Malawi, Victoria, And Tanganyika, Alyssa Mcintyre
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
An animal’s skeletal and muscular structures form a biological machine capable of interacting with its environment. When anatomical form changes the resulting modification in biomechanical function can allow it to occupy a new ecological niche. The cichlid fishes of the major East African Rift Lakes have been frequently regarded as one of the best know examples of adaptive radiations that have produced a large variety of skull shapes in an unusually short span of evolutionary time that has permitted the use of an extremely wide variety of feeding niches. I studied the anatomical diversity of this incredible lineage by dissecting …
The Geographic Distribution Of Polyploidy In A Pacific Northwest Plant, Megan A. Larson
The Geographic Distribution Of Polyploidy In A Pacific Northwest Plant, Megan A. Larson
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Polyploidy is an important evolutionary mechanism of speciation in plants. Because polyploids may evolve cryptically, there can be several levels of ploidy in a species. The distribution of polyploid species is the first step in understanding the role of polyploidy in plant speciation. I examined the geographic distribution of polyploidy in Heuchera cylindrica (Saxifragaceae) by using flow cytometry to determine the ploidy level of 595 individuals from 39 populations spread across the geographic range of the species. Only single cytotype populations of diploids or tetraploids were found, and no triploids were observed. In contrast to other studies of polyploid distribution, …
Enhancing Bacterial Expression Of Mammalian Gprotein Coupled Receptors The Creation Of A Proteorhodopsin‐Bovine Rhodopsin Chimera, Chauncey Brown Jr.
Enhancing Bacterial Expression Of Mammalian Gprotein Coupled Receptors The Creation Of A Proteorhodopsin‐Bovine Rhodopsin Chimera, Chauncey Brown Jr.
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Bovine (cow) rhodopsin is a 7‐transmembrane (7TM), lightabsorbing protein located in rod cells. It is activated by the photoisomerization of retinal, a Vitamin A derivative. This light‐triggered reaction activates the G‐Protein Coupled Receptor (GPCR), resulting in a signaling cascade within the cell. When previously cloned in an E. coli expression vector in the Braiman Lab, bovine rhodopsin expression was not successful, possibly due to E. coli’s lack of recognition of the foreign Nterminus portion of the protein, which may be a prerequisite for proper folding and insertion into the membrane. Our proposed solution is to create a chimera protein, replacing …

The Effectiveness Of The Dove Campaign For Real Beauty In Terms Of Society And The Brand, Lindsey Morel
The Effectiveness Of The Dove Campaign For Real Beauty In Terms Of Society And The Brand, Lindsey Morel
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The following thesis aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. The problem is that of measuring the effectiveness of the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty in a form deeper than numbers. As the campaign held a secondary goal of changing women’s perceptions of beauty, so should the evaluation. Thus, two measures will be employed.
First, the following thesis evaluates the campaigns effect on society by examining how the issue of beauty at large was and is communicated. Data was collected on beauty by drawing from experience, researching eating disorders, and exploring a feminist approach to …
Transition Of Blame: The Othering Of Aids From Homosexuals To Africans, Claire S. Zillman
Transition Of Blame: The Othering Of Aids From Homosexuals To Africans, Claire S. Zillman
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
In 1983, the first year The New York Times wrote more than one story on AIDS — acquired immune deficiency syndrome — the newspaper printed 77 articles that included the word “AIDS” and the word “homosexual.” This total reached its peak in 1987, when 314 articles that included the two words were written. In 1990, this total was down to 109, and at the turn of the century in 2000, only 29 articles that mentioned these two words were published.
Conversely, in 1983, only nine Times articles included “AIDS” and “Africa.” In 1987, when articles about the connection between AIDS …
Fatal Flu: History, Science, And Politics Of The 1918 Influenza Pandemic, Suzanne Vroman
Fatal Flu: History, Science, And Politics Of The 1918 Influenza Pandemic, Suzanne Vroman
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
In 1918 an influenza pandemic killed over 50 million people world wide including 675,000 in the United States alone. This Capstone Thesis asks the question: what caused the 1918 pandemic to become so fatal? In order to understand how the influenza outbreak of 1918 turned into one of the world’s deadliest pandemics, I took a unique approach to tackling the mystery of the “Spanish Influenza,” by interpreting the high fatality rate from both a social and natural scientific approach. This project is broken into two parts.
The first part of this paper gives a historical analysis of the 1918 …
Rammed Earth Architecture's Journey To The High Hills Of The Santee, Jessica Golebiowski
Rammed Earth Architecture's Journey To The High Hills Of The Santee, Jessica Golebiowski
All Theses
Rammed earth, a form of earthen architecture and construction that has been used for thousands of years, has gone through periods of resurgence and decline. Its modern era rediscovery through practice and publications during the late 18th and early 19th century was fueled by writers and practitioners who disseminated the ideas of pisé starting in France extending to England and eventually to other European countries and the United States. Once these ideas reached America, farmers and intellectuals alike were interested in this simple yet durable means of construction.
Rammed earth ideas, while intellectualized in Europe, originated from practice in Africa …
Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning, Adonna Clark
Interdisciplinary Teaching And Learning, Adonna Clark
Theses and Dissertations
In the early 1600's, the Pilgrims and the Puritans brought their musical traditions with them to establish a new life. The survival of their families depended upon their ability to provide food, shelter and clothing. Despite the challenges they faced, the colonists recognized the importance of educating their children. In 1642, the Massachusetts School Law was passed. It required town leaders to require parents to provide their children with an elementary education. Music training was not part of this newly required education. Due to the demands of life, the colonists were unable to nurture their musical abilities. Those who had …
Effect Of Molecular Weight Reduction By Gamma Irradiation On The Antimicrobial Activity Of Chitosan, Ebuel Sirmats
Effect Of Molecular Weight Reduction By Gamma Irradiation On The Antimicrobial Activity Of Chitosan, Ebuel Sirmats
All Theses
The antimicrobial effectiveness of lower molecular weight (LMW) chitosan solutions was tested against Listeria innocua inoculated on TSA and MOX agar plates by the direct droplet method. The chitosan solutions were prepared by dissolving chitosan in 1% (v/v) acetic acid at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0% and irradiating with Co60 gamma rays ranging from 1 to 20 kGy. MW measurements of chitosan were determined by using HPSEC-MALLS-RI. The MW of chitosan varied from 114.8 kDa to 17.4 kDa and decreased with increasing irradiation dosages. Plate counts on TSA agar from shaker flask assays showed no significant differences among chitosan …

A secondary objective is to provide evidence that the nutrition component of a culinary nutrition course can be delivered online through an interactive presentation. The study initially involved a review of literature highlighting the nutrition habits of college students, the strengths and weakness of existing cooking and nutrition classes, and other factors relating to the college student's health. Based on this literature review it was determined that a culinary nutrition course is an appropriate way to …
Testing The Individual Effective Dose Hypothesis, Hung Vu
Testing The Individual Effective Dose Hypothesis, Hung Vu
All Theses
The assumption of the individual effective dose is the basis for the probit method used for analyzing dose or concentration – response data. According to this assumption, each individual has a uniquely innate tolerance expressed as the individual effective dose (IED) or the smallest dose that is sufficient to kill it. An alternative to IED, stochasticity suggests that individuals do not have uniquely innate tolerance; deaths result from random processes occurring among similar individuals. While the probit method has been used extensively in toxicology the underlying assumption has not been tested rigorously. The goal of this study was to test …
Visual Argument Reconsidered: 'Objective' Theory And A Classical Rhetorical Approach, Daniel Richards
Visual Argument Reconsidered: 'Objective' Theory And A Classical Rhetorical Approach, Daniel Richards
All Theses
Visual argument is a relatively new discipline within the field of visual rhetorics. Consequently, visual rhetoricians have presented new theories of visual argumentation without fully considering the possibilities of existing textual methodologies as explanatory tools—especially classical rhetorical devices. This thesis presents a methodology for examining and creating visual arguments based on the concepts of topoi and figures of speech. I contend that these classical rhetorical devises embody an “objective” understanding of visual communication that shows one way of bridging the empiricism/rationalism debate in epistemology. By demonstrating that knowledge comes from the necessary interplay of perception and conception, I attempt to …
Victims And Aggressors: Black And Jewish Interethnic Relationships In Contemporary American Literature, Jessica Martin
Victims And Aggressors: Black And Jewish Interethnic Relationships In Contemporary American Literature, Jessica Martin
All Theses
Though blacks and Jews are often portrayed together in African-American and Jewish-American writing, the reasons for the juxtapositions are curious. Contemporary authors have created a close relationship between blacks and Jews that, perhaps with the exception of their cooperation during the Civil Rights movement, historically did not exist. But, the relationship between these two groups in literature offers a unique perspective on American racial and ethnic social structures because both blacks and Jews are considered minority groups, yet they also maintain a hierarchical relationship with one another. By employing black and Jewish characters, American writers, especially Jewish-American writers, create a …
An Evaluation Of Function-Based Representations And Information Archival In Engineering Design, Benjamin Caldwell
An Evaluation Of Function-Based Representations And Information Archival In Engineering Design, Benjamin Caldwell
All Theses
Recent research in function-based design includes the development of a vocabulary of functions, the Functional Basis, and a repository of products and their functions. Many design tools are being developed around this vocabulary and repository to support conceptual design. The usefulness of these tools, however, is dependent on the quality of the vocabulary and the information contained in the repository. In this research, both the vocabulary and the repository are empirically evaluated to understand their strengths and limitations. A statistical analysis is performed on function models in the repository to determine the frequency of usage of Functional Basis terms. It …

Ogden Valley is a high mountain community located in the northern Wasatch Mountain Range (Figure 1), and is located entirely within Weber County, Utah. Three communities sit within the valley: Huntsville, Eden, and Liberty. Early Mormon settlers established these communities in the mid-1800s; however, only the town of Huntsville is incorporated. The rural valley is in close proximity to the densely populated Wasatch Front, in particular, Ogden City. Ogden Valley is approximately 331 square miles and has an elevation that ranges between 4400 and 9700 feet. This wide range in elevation provides a diverse environment for humans, wildlife , and …
Patterns Of Psychosocial Functioning And Mental Health Service Utilization In Children And Adolescents With Chronic Health Conditions Or Physical Disabilities, Sara M. Hunt
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was designed to further understand the psychosocial functioning of youth with chronic health conditions or physical disabilities, their need for and use of mental health services, and possible barriers to receiving needed services. Previous research has suggested these youth experience poorer psychosocial functioning compared to peers without special health care needs, and they also underutilize needed mental health services. A mixed-methods design was implemented consisting of a quantitative parent survey and a qualitative semistructured interview with young adults with special health care needs.
Children demonstrating poorer psychosocial adjustment in this study experienced more problems related to social functioning …
Predicting Rna Secondary Structures By Folding Simulation: Software And Experiments, Joel Omni Gillespie
Predicting Rna Secondary Structures By Folding Simulation: Software And Experiments, Joel Omni Gillespie
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
We present a new method for predicting the secondary structure of RNA sequences. Using our method, each RNA nucleotide of an RNA Sequence is represented as a point on a 3D triangular lattice. Using the Simulated Annealing technique, we manipulate the location of the points on the lattice. We explore various scoring functions for judging the relative quality of the structures created by these manipulations. After near optimal configurations on the lattice have been found, we describe how the lattice locations of the nucleotides can be used to predict a secondary structure for the sequence. This prediction can be further …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Chapter 1 provides some background information on the disease area of cancer and current modes of treatment. Chemotherapy treatment is discussed with a focus on the major cellular targets for these drugs: DNA and microtubules. For each target, classes of active compounds are described along with their mode of action. The microtubule stabilizing agent laulimalide is introduced and a case is made for analogue synthesis.
Chapter 2 describes our first generation efforts toward synthesis of des-methyl laulimalide. The target compound is divided into a northern and southern fragment with the synthesis of each fragment described. The preparation of landmark intermediates …
The Curing Law: On The Evolution Of Baby-Making Markets, Noa Ben-Asher
The Curing Law: On The Evolution Of Baby-Making Markets, Noa Ben-Asher
Cardozo Law Review
The article offers a new paradigm to examine the legal regulation of reproductive technologies. The main argument is that a cure paradigm has shaped historical and current legal baby-making markets. Namely, reproductive technologies that have historically been understood as a cure for infertility (such as sperm donations and egg donations) have developed into market commodities, while others (such as full surrogacy) which have not been understood as a cure, have not. The article examines and critiques the cure paradigm. Specifically, the article challenges one current manifestation of the cure paradigm: the legal distinction between "full surrogacy" (where a surrogate is …

Pulsed Jet Dynamics Of Squid Hatchlings At Intermediate Reynolds Numbers, Ian K. Bartol, Paul S. Krueger, William J. Stewart, Joseph T. Thompson
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Squid paralarvae (hatchlings) rely predominantly on a pulsed jet for locomotion, distinguishing them from the majority of aquatic locomotors at low/intermediate Reynolds numbers (Re), which employ oscillatory/undulatory modes of propulsion. Although squid paralarvae may delineate the lower size limit of biological jet propulsion, surprisingly little is known about the hydrodynamics and propulsive efficiency of paralarval jetting within the intermediate Re realm. To better understand paralarval jet dynamics, we used digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and high-speed video to measure bulk vortex properties ( e. g. circulation, impulse, kinetic energy) and other jet features [ e. g. average and …

A Positive Development View Of Risk-Taking : Attachment, Mental Health, Internal Control, And Life Engagement, Lauren Michelle Denneson
Dissertations and Theses
Previous research has primarily focused on potential negative outcomes of risk-taking (e.g., Byrnes, Miller, & Schafer, 1999). However, risk-taking may be beneficial for our mental health. Currently, the United States (U.S.) is seeing an increase in the prevalence and incidence of anxiety and depressive symptoms (N1MH, 2002, 2003, 2006; WHO, 2001). At the same time, individuals in the U.S. spend a large percentage of time in low-energy, "time wasting" activities, such as watching television (United States Department of Labor, 2007), which is in discord with how our stress response functions optimally (Sapolsky, 1998; Dhabhar, 2002). Furthermore, attachment theory posits a …
Imaging Second-Harmonic Radiation And Scattering Patterns In Zno Micro/Nanostructures, Katrina Marie Geren
Imaging Second-Harmonic Radiation And Scattering Patterns In Zno Micro/Nanostructures, Katrina Marie Geren
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The optical characteristics of ZnO nanostructures have recently garnered interest due to the inclusion of these structures in many nanoscale optical and optoelectronic devices. This thesis will address several characteristics involving second harmonic generation and scattering in ZnO nano- and microstructures. A method will be presented for determining the nonlinear coefficients of the second order susceptibility in a single ZnO rod. This method uses transmission geometry where previous methods have employed back-reflected irradiation. The nonlinear coefficients found using this new technique were consistent with previous data from similar structures. Models will be presented for predicting the second harmonic scattering patterns …

A Community Ecology And Stable Isotope Study Of Plankton, Macroinvertebrate, And Fish Communities Surrounding Groundwater Vents In Lake Huron, Michigan, Thomas Garrison Sanders Jr.
Masters Theses
Extreme environments can create ecotones with uncharacteristic physicochemical conditions and ecological communities. Recently, several submerged sinkholes were discovered in Lake Huron where hypoxic groundwater that is rich with dissolved ions intrudes into surrounding lake water. Researchers have documented large growths of cyanobacteria and chemosynthetic bacteria surrounding these groundwater vents, but little is known if this production is utilized by upper trophic level organisms and how the environmental conditions affect local community density and diversity. My objectives were threefold: (1) I wanted to confirm the presence and describe the nature and extent of chemical and physical gradients in the sublacustrine sinkhole …
