The Four-And-A-Half Lim Domain Protein 2 Regulates Vascular Smooth Muscle Phenotype And Vascular Tone, Nicole A. Neuman, Susan Ma, Gavin R. Schnitzler, Yan Zhu, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata May 2009

The Four-And-A-Half Lim Domain Protein 2 Regulates Vascular Smooth Muscle Phenotype And Vascular Tone, Nicole A. Neuman, Susan Ma, Gavin R. Schnitzler, Yan Zhu, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata

Biology

In responsetovascular injury, differentiated vascular smooth muscle cells (vSMCs) undergo a uniqueprocess knownas“phenotype modulation,” transitioning from a quiescent, “contractile” phenotype to a proliferative, “synthetic” state. We have demonstrated previously that the signaling pathway of bone morphogenetic proteins, members of the transforming growth factor family, play a role in the induction and maintenance of a contractile phenotype in human primary pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells. In this study, we show that a four-and-ahalf LIM domainprotein 2(FHL2)inhibits transcriptional activation ofvSMC-specificgenesmediatedbythebonemorphogenetic protein signaling pathway through the CArG box-binding proteins, such as serum response factor and members of the myocardin (Myocd) family. Interestingly, FHL2 …

Evaluation Of Groundwater Storage Monitoring With The Grace Satellite: Case Study High Plains Aquifer, Central United States, Gil Strassberg, Bridget Scanlon, D. Chambers

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Water scarcity is a critical issue in semiarid regions; however, regional groundwater monitoring is extremely limited. This study evaluates the ability of the GRACE satellites to monitor groundwater storage in the semiarid High Plains aquifer, United States (450,000 km2 area), which is subjected to intense irrigation. GRACE-derived terrestrial water storage (TWS) is highly correlated with the sum of soil moisture (SM) and groundwater storage (GWS) (R = 0.96 for in situ measured SM from 78 stations and R = 0.95 for simulated SM with the Noah land surface model with root-mean-square difference of 38 mm and 36 mm, …

Passiflora (Passifloraceae) Defenses Against Heliconius Cydno (Nymphalidae: Heliconiinae) Oviposition, May 2009, Kim Khuc May 2009

Passiflora (Passifloraceae) Defenses Against Heliconius Cydno (Nymphalidae: Heliconiinae) Oviposition, May 2009, Kim Khuc

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The purpose of this study was to determine the relative effectiveness of Passiflora defenses: elevated levels of cyanide, egg mimics, and variable leaf shapes, against oviposition from Heliconius cydno. The effectiveness of these defenses would reveal H. cydno’s preferences for oviposition sites and the primary criteria it uses when evaluating oviposition sites. Forty-two Passiflora oerstedii vines from the Monteverde Butterfly Garden, in Costa Rica, were divided into three treatments that added either cyanide, false eggs, or changed the shape of young leaves. Another twelve Passiflora coccinea vines were used in a second experiment that added false eggs to the young …

Altitudinal Distribution And Niche Partitioning Of Two Redstart Species In Monteverde (Parulidae), May 2009, Brad Nitta

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Global climate change is affecting habitat and species interactions globally (Sekerciouglu et al. 2008), including tropical montane regions (Pounds et al. 1999, Holmes 2000, Pounds et al. 2006). In Monteverde, Costa Rica, two species of warblers, the Collared Redstart (Myioborus torquatus) and the Slate-throated Redstart (M. miniatus), are known to partition altitudinally with a sizeable sympatric zone of overlap (Shopland 1985, Mahan 1998, Adams 2003). As with other species, global warming is thought to cause changes in the altitudinal distributions of both Redstarts. Both species are expected to move upward. To avoid competitive exclusion, niche partitioning should occur in the …

Eciton Burchellii: Polymorphism Of Submajor Caste And Foraging Efficiency, May 2009, Samantha Alger

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Due to the link between efficiency and fitness, there should be selective pressure for morphology and behavior that promotes foraging efficiency. Among social insects, selective pressures act on individuals, shaping the physical castes of a colony. The highly polymorphic army ant, Eciton burchellii, has castes with morphological adaptations to allow task specialization. This study investigates what selective pressures are acting to shape the polymorphism of the submajor caste in E. burchellii. Ants were collected to find a relationship between ant caste and the prey’s biomass, width, and length. Results show that prey width is the greatest pressure effecting transportation efficiency, …

Local Head Loss Of Non-Coaxial Emitters Inserted In Polyethylene Pipe, Osvaldo Rettore Neto, Jarbas Honorio De Miranda, José Antonio Frizzone, Stephen R. Workman May 2009

Local Head Loss Of Non-Coaxial Emitters Inserted In Polyethylene Pipe, Osvaldo Rettore Neto, Jarbas Honorio De Miranda, José Antonio Frizzone, Stephen R. Workman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The design of a lateral line for drip irrigation requires accurate evaluation of head losses in not only the pipe but in the emitters as well. A procedure was developed to determine localized head losses within the emitters by the formulation of a mathematical model that accounts for the obstruction caused by the insertion point. These localized losses can be significant when compared with the total head losses within the system due to the large number of emitters typically installed along the lateral line. An experiment was carried out by altering flow characteristics to create Reynolds numbers (R) from 7,480 …

Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Faculty Publications

The cerebral neuropathology of Type 2 diabetes (CNDM2) has not been positively defined. This review includes a description of CNDM2 research from before the ‘Pubmed Era’. Recent neuroimaging studies have focused on cerebrovascular and white matter pathology. These and prior studies about cerebrovascular histopathology in diabetes are reviewed. Evidence is also described for and against the link between CNDM2 and Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. To study this matter directly, we evaluated data from University of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Center (UK ADC) patients recruited while non-demented and followed longitudinally. Of patients who had come to autopsy (N = 234), 139 met …

Intermountain Bird Observatory Publications and Presentations

Our knowledge of avian behaviors during the non-breeding period still lags behind that of the breeding season, but the last decade has witnessed a proliferation in research that has yielded significant progress in understanding migration patterns of North American birds. And, although the great majority of migration research has historically been conducted in the eastern half of the continent, there has been much recent progress on aspects of avian migration in the West. In particular, expanded use of techniques such as radar, plasma metabolites, mist-netting, count surveys, stable isotopes, genetic data, and animal tracking, coupled with an increase in multi-investigator …

Intersexed, Intertext: A Critique Of Limited Gender Identity In Herculine Barbin And Middlesex, Allison Andrew May 2009

Intersexed, Intertext: A Critique Of Limited Gender Identity In Herculine Barbin And Middlesex, Allison Andrew

All Theses

Relying on the work of poststructuralists Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, and Judith Halberstam for their findings on gender and sexuality, as well as the sociological study of intersexed individuals by Sharon Preves, this thesis will show the identity construction of the intersexed both before and after intervention by closely charting their plight as it is presented in Michel Foucault's Herculine Barbin (1980) and Jeffrey Eugenides's Middlesex (2003). These texts vary greatly in historical significance, genre, and audience, but nevertheless suggest the same argument regarding the construction of identity. Ultimately, it is the self whose definition is of the greatest importance. …

The Impact Of Early Childhood Programs On Student Achievement, Kelly Ann Sutherland

Dissertations

The common goal of wanting children to succeed in school is shared by educators, families, and communities. While meeting educational benchmarks, such as achieving at grade level to staying in school, can be linked to school readiness, so can early childhood programs. Early childhood programs such as Parents as Teachers and Pre-k programs, are important interventions to help improve student achievement and success in school. In this study, student samples were drawn from existing data in one rural school district in Missouri. The testing data were from students who began school from the fall of 2004 to the fall of …

Karst Regions Of The World (Krow): Global Karst Datasets And Maps To Advance The Protection Of Karst Species And Habitats Worldwide, Emily Hollingsworth

KIP Theses and Dissertations

Historically, many people dealing with caves and karst have tended to be guarded about sharing information. They have sought to protect their property, their resources, liability risk, and special interests by keeping details about karst (especially caves) secret. This has resulted in inconsistent, localized, and hard-to-access knowledge and data, in highly generalized large-scale maps of widely varying consistency and quality.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria Allow Reduced Application Rates Of Chemical Fertilizers, A. O. Adesemoye, H. A. Torbert, J. W. Kloepper

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The search for microorganisms that improve soil fertility and enhance plant nutrition has continued to attract attention due to the increasing cost of fertilizers and some of their negative environmental impacts. The objectives of this greenhouse study with tomato were to determine (1) if reduced rates of inorganic fertilizer coupled with microbial inoculants will produce plant growth, yield, and nutrient uptake levels equivalent to those with full rates of the fertilizer and (2) the minimum level to which fertilizer could be reduced when inoculants were used. The microbial inoculants used in the study were a mixture of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria …
