Social And Economic Evaluation Methods For Fisheries: A Review Of The Literature - Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 21, 2009, Simon Vieira, Jacki Schirmer, Edwina Loxton May 2009

Social And Economic Evaluation Methods For Fisheries: A Review Of The Literature - Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 21, 2009, Simon Vieira, Jacki Schirmer, Edwina Loxton

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

The Department of Fisheries Western Australia is responsible for managing Western Australia’s fishery resources in a way that is consistent with the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD). Implementing these principles in a practical manner for fisheries has involved the development of a new management approach that is termed Ecosystems Based Fisheries Management (EBFM). This process incorporates social and economic factors into the management process along with biological and environmental considerations, at both the Fisheries and regional levels.

To date, minimal work has been done to address social and economic factors in accordance with EBFM. This is primarily due to …

Towards Dynamical Systems Approach To Fuzzy Clustering, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva May 2009

Towards Dynamical Systems Approach To Fuzzy Clustering, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many application areas, there is a need for clustering, and there is a need to take fuzzy uncertainty into account when clustering. Most existing fuzzy clustering techniques are based on the idea that an object belongs to a certain cluster if this object is close to a typical object from this cluster. In some application areas, however, this idea does not work well. One example of such application is clustering in education that is used to convert a detailed number grade into a letter grade.

In such application, it is more appropriate to use clustering techniques which are based …

Do Hypothermic Tissue Tolerances Limit Torpor Expression?, Clark J. Cotton, Henry J. Harlow May 2009

Do Hypothermic Tissue Tolerances Limit Torpor Expression?, Clark J. Cotton, Henry J. Harlow

Biology Faculty Publications

1. Arrest temperatures and Q10 values for extensor digitorum longus (EDL), soleus, trabecula, and jejunum muscle twitch strength, contraction time, and 0.5 relaxation time were calculated for a deep torpor hibernator, white-tailed prairie dog (WTPD) (Cynomys leucurus), a shallow torpor hibernator, black-tailed prairie dog (BTPD) (Cynomys ludovicianus), and a non-hibernator, lab rat (Rattus norvegicus) to test the hypothesis that tissue temperature tolerances limit the depth of expressed torpor.

2. There were no temperature tolerance differences between the tissues of the two species of hibernators. Both hibernating species had arrest temperatures and Q10 …

From Bomb Zone To Boom Town: Real Estate Trends And Community Based Practice In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Ivis Garcia Zambrana May 2009

From Bomb Zone To Boom Town: Real Estate Trends And Community Based Practice In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Ivis Garcia Zambrana

Latin American Studies ETDs

The departure of the Navy in 2003, paired with extensive media coverage throughout the U.S., resulted in increased demand for real estate in Vieques. Most properties were bought by land speculators and baby-boomers from the U.S. The increase in demand caused prices to skyrocket, quadrupling prices in just four years. Activists, residents and government officials are now concerned that low-to-middle income Viequense families, who account for the majority of the population, are unable to afford property in their own community. The aim of this thesis is to document the real estate market trends in Vieques, demonstrate how rising prices and …

A Resource Guide For Embedding Multicultural Capital Into The Secondary Science Classrooms Of Central Washington, Theresa Susan Bell May 2009

A Resource Guide For Embedding Multicultural Capital Into The Secondary Science Classrooms Of Central Washington, Theresa Susan Bell

All Graduate Projects

The multiple aspects of multicultural education were researched and are here-in compared and discussed. Through research it was found that although much research exists on multicultural education, little or no multicultural resources are available for secondary science specific to Central Washington. Implications for multicultural education, science education and the integration of the two are discussed. A collection of lessons, websites and teacher tools were merged into a resource guide that can be used for local lesson planning. Practical ideas are offered to the inexperienced multicultural science educator.

Optical Stress On The Surface Of A Particle: Homogeneous Sphere, Feng Xu, James A. Lock, Gérard Gouesbet, Cameron Tropea May 2009

Optical Stress On The Surface Of A Particle: Homogeneous Sphere, Feng Xu, James A. Lock, Gérard Gouesbet, Cameron Tropea

Physics Faculty Publications

A rigorous solution (generalized Lorenz-Mie theory) and an approximate solution (geometrical optics) are developed for the optical stress distribution on the surface of a homogeneous sphere. Demonstration calculations are made for plane-wave and Gaussian-beam illuminations. The influence of diffracted waves, surface waves, interference effects, caustic points, beam width, and refractive index on the stress is analyzed. The Debye series is used to evaluate the validity of geometrical optics and provides a quantitative analysis of the contribution of rays of different orders.

Phytochemical Screening And Antimicrobial Activity Of The Plant Extracts Of Mimosa Pudica L. Against Selected Microbes, N. Gandhiraja, S. Sriram, V. Meenaa, J. Kavitha Srilakshmi, C. Sasikumar, R. Rajeswari May 2009

Phytochemical Screening And Antimicrobial Activity Of The Plant Extracts Of Mimosa Pudica L. Against Selected Microbes, N. Gandhiraja, S. Sriram, V. Meenaa, J. Kavitha Srilakshmi, C. Sasikumar, R. Rajeswari

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Mimosa pudica L. is a creeping annual or perennial herb. It has been identified as Lajjalu in Ayurveda and has been found to have antiasthmatic, aphrodisiac, analgesic and antidepressant. In the present study the active phytocomponents of Mimosa pudica were revealed using phytochemical analysis. The antimicrobial activity of Mimosa was studied using well diffusion method. The activity was tested against Aspergillus fumigatus, Citrobacter divergens and Klebsiella pneumonia at different concentrations of 50, 100 and 200μg/disc and the results have been illustrated.
