A Study Of Three Program Types' Effectiveness In The Prevention And Awareness Of Hiv/Aids In Sub-Saharan Africa, Kathryn Wood

Social Work Theses

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to over 60% of the world’s AIDS cases; thus, HIV prevention and treatment is a pressing global issue that needs to be addressed with governmental assistance, medication, education, and overall community support. This research paper examines and compares the success of HIV/AIDS treatment, education, and prevention programs in sub-Saharan Africa in order to determine which type of program is the most effective. The three program types that are examined are large-scale governmental policies and organizations, local community run grassroots organizations, and programs that combine grassroots initiatives with umbrella organization assistance. The general consensus of the reviewed …

How Do You Compare? The Correlations Of Social Desirability And Self-Esteem As Well As Social Desirability And Self-Consciousness, Kristy Johnson, Kristy Myers May 2009

How Do You Compare? The Correlations Of Social Desirability And Self-Esteem As Well As Social Desirability And Self-Consciousness, Kristy Johnson, Kristy Myers

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

In the present study, 81 participants were asked to self-report their levels of self-esteem and self-consciousness using Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale and Fenigstein’s Self-Consciousness Scale, respectively, as well as report their current semester GPA in order to study the correlations between these variables and the variable of GPA inflation. There was no significance found for the correlations between the level of GPA inflation and experimental condition, between GPA inflation and self-esteem, or between GPA inflation and self-consciousness for the 35 participants with obtainable GPA’s. However, the present researchers did find significance in the correlation between inflated GPA and self-consciousness for the …

The Influence Of Inequality And Noneconomic Institutions On Cross-National Terrorist Incidents, Magan Savana Newton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

To expand the research base concerning terrorism this study connects terrorist incidents on a global scale with economic and noneconomic institutional factors. Whereas most terrorism studies use social disorganization theory or anomie theory as their theoretical bases, this study uses institutional anomie theory (IAT) to examine the influence of economic and noneconomic institutions on terrorist-incident counts in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The research employs the following five sources that are linked together: The Global Terrorism Database (GTD), World Bank Database, data from the University of Texas Inequality Project (UTIP), the United Nations (UN), and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). …

Students of a south central university provide data for this study investigating knowledge of self-injury (SI), experiences with those who self-injure, and perceptions of SI. This study proposes that college peers of those who self-injure have higher levels of SI knowledge than professionals who work with individuals who self-injure. In addition, the study proposes that individuals who have experience with others who self-injure have higher levels of SI knowledge than individuals who do not have experience with others who self-injure. An additional purpose of this study is to explore information regarding experiences people have with others who self-injure and their …

Empirical Testing Of 16s Rrna Gene Pcr Primer Pairs Reveals Variance In Target Specificity And Efficacy Not Suggested By In Silico Analysis, Sergio E. Morales, William E. Holben May 2009

Empirical Testing Of 16s Rrna Gene Pcr Primer Pairs Reveals Variance In Target Specificity And Efficacy Not Suggested By In Silico Analysis, Sergio E. Morales, William E. Holben

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Phylogenetic and "fingerprinting" analyses of the 16S rRNA genes of prokaryotes have been a mainstay of microbial ecology during the last two decades. However, many methods and results from studies that rely on the 16S rRNA gene for detection and quantification of specific microbial taxa have seemingly received only cursory or even no validation. To directly examine the efficacy and specificity of 16S rRNA gene-based primers for phylum-, class-, and operational taxonomic unit-specific target amplification in quantitative PCR, we created a collection of primers based solely on an extensive soil bacterial 16S rRNA gene clone library containing similar to 5,000 …

Intersubunit Interactions Modulate Ph-Induced Activation Of Membrane Fusion By The Junín Virus Envelope Glycoprotein Gpc, Joanne York, Jack H. Nunberg May 2009

Intersubunit Interactions Modulate Ph-Induced Activation Of Membrane Fusion By The Junín Virus Envelope Glycoprotein Gpc, Joanne York, Jack H. Nunberg

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The mature arenavirus envelope glycoprotein GPC is a tripartite complex comprising a stable signal peptide (SSP) in addition to the receptor-binding (G1) and transmembrane fusion (G2) subunits. We have shown previously that SSP is a key element in GPC-mediated membrane fusion, and that GPC sensitivity to acidic pH is modulated in part through the lysine residue at position 33 in the ectodomain loop of SSP (J. York and J. H. Nunberg, J. Virol. 80: 7775-7780, 2006). A glutamine substitution at this position stabilizes the native GPC complex and thereby prevents the induction of pH-dependent membrane fusion. In efforts to identify …

Common Garden Comparisons Of Native And Introduced Plant Populations: Latitudinal Clines Can Obscure Evolutionary Inferences, Robert I. Colautti, John L. Maron, Spencer C.H. Barrett May 2009

Common Garden Comparisons Of Native And Introduced Plant Populations: Latitudinal Clines Can Obscure Evolutionary Inferences, Robert I. Colautti, John L. Maron, Spencer C.H. Barrett

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Common garden studies are increasingly used to identify differences in phenotypic traits between native and introduced genotypes, often ignoring sources of among-population variation within each range. We re-analyzed data from 32 common garden studies of 28 plant species that tested for rapid evolution associated with biological invasion. Our goals were: (i) to identify patterns of phenotypic trait variation among populations within native and introduced ranges, and (ii) to explore the consequences of this variation for how differences between the ranges are interpreted. We combined life history and physiologic traits into a single principal component (PCALL) and also compared …

Chronic Wasting Disease Prions In Elk Antler Velvet, Rachel C. Angers, Tanya S. Seward, Dana Napier, Michael Green, Edward Hoover, Terry Spraker, Katherine O'Rourke, Aru Balachandran, Glenn C. Telling May 2009

Chronic Wasting Disease Prions In Elk Antler Velvet, Rachel C. Angers, Tanya S. Seward, Dana Napier, Michael Green, Edward Hoover, Terry Spraker, Katherine O'Rourke, Aru Balachandran, Glenn C. Telling

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a contagious, fatal prion disease of deer and elk that continues to emerge in new locations. To explore the means by which prions are transmitted with high efficiency among cervids, we examined prion infectivity in the apical skin layer covering the growing antler (antler velvet) by using CWD-susceptible transgenic mice and protein misfolding cyclic amplification. Our finding of prions in antler velvet of CWD-affected elk suggests that this tissue may play a role in disease transmission among cervids. Humans who consume antler velvet as a nutritional supplement are at risk for exposure to prions. The …

Biogeochemical Behavior Of Dissolved Arsenic And Uranium Concentrations In Public Water Supply Wells, Kevin J. Mcvey May 2009

Biogeochemical Behavior Of Dissolved Arsenic And Uranium Concentrations In Public Water Supply Wells, Kevin J. Mcvey

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Public water supply (PWS) wells currently contain dissolved uranium concentrations above the federally mandated maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 30 ppb (parts per billion) and dissolved arsenic concentrations above the 10 ppb MCL. Both uranium and arsenic are known to cause various forms of cancer in humans. Variations in total uranium concentrations in PWS wells in Nebraska indicate a relationship to the duration and rate of pumping in specific wells. Although total arsenic concentrations show some variability over time in specific wells, the relationship to pumping is not as clear. Previous studies show that iron and sulfur bacteria present in …

Design, Construction, And Testing Of A New Class Of Mobile Robots, Ivan Siles May 2009

Design, Construction, And Testing Of A New Class Of Mobile Robots, Ivan Siles

All Theses

This thesis introduces a novel mobile robot design concept aimed at exploration of subterranean spaces. The key innovation is the combination of highly maneuverable body elements with wheel/leg elements (Whegs). This combination offers performance not possible with conventional 'monolithic' wheeled or tracked mobile robots, or with current robot snakes. The thesis covers four design iterations of the concept, concentrating on describing the overall design process and results from field tests. Additionally a kinematic analysis of the fourth prototype and implications for future designs is presented.

Kinetic Studies Of Biological Interactions By Affinity Chromatography, John E. Schiel, David S. Hage May 2009

Kinetic Studies Of Biological Interactions By Affinity Chromatography, John E. Schiel, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

The rates at which biological interactions occur can provide important information on the mechanism and behavior of such processes in living systems. This review will discuss how affinity chromatography can be used as a tool to examine the kinetics of biological interactions. This approach, referred to here as biointeraction chromatography, uses a column with an immobilized binding agent to examine the association or dissociation of this agent with other compounds. The use of HPLC-based affinity columns in kinetic studies has received particular attention in recent years. Advantages of using HPLC with affinity chromatography for this purpose include the ability to …

Non-Competitive Peak Decay Analysis Of Drugprotein Dissociation By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, Jianzhong Chen, John E. Schiel, David S. Hage May 2009

Non-Competitive Peak Decay Analysis Of Drugprotein Dissociation By High-Performance Affinity Chromatography, Jianzhong Chen, John E. Schiel, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

The peak decay method is an affinity chromatographic technique that has been used to examine the dissociation of solutes from immobilized ligands in the presence of excess displacing agent. However, it can be difficult to find a displacing agent that does not interfere with detection of the eluting analyte. In this study, a non-competitive peak decay method was developed in which no displacing agent was required for analyte elution. This method was evaluated for the study of drug-protein interactions by using it along with high-performance affinity chromatography to measure the dissociation rate constants for R- and S-warfarin from …
