The Influence Of Daily Social Stimulation In Ameliorating Ptsd-Like Behavioral And Physiological Changes In Rats Exposed To Chronic Psychosocial Stress, Shyam Seetharaman May 2009

The Influence Of Daily Social Stimulation In Ameliorating Ptsd-Like Behavioral And Physiological Changes In Rats Exposed To Chronic Psychosocial Stress, Shyam Seetharaman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Individuals exposed to life-threatening trauma are at increased risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Not all people exposed to trauma, however, go on to develop PTSD. Some evidence suggests that individuals who receive social stimulation, such being involved in supportive social networks, are less likely to develop PTSD compared to those lacking social interactions. Although human research has been effective in demonstrating associations between higher levels of social stimulation and lower incidences of PTSD, there has been a lack of experimental evidence suggesting that social stimulation protects against the onset of the disorder after trauma. Here, we tested the …

Best Management Practices For Corn Production In South Dakota: Irrigation And Salt Management, Todd P. Trooien, C. Gregg Carlson, Hal D. Werner May 2009

Best Management Practices For Corn Production In South Dakota: Irrigation And Salt Management, Todd P. Trooien, C. Gregg Carlson, Hal D. Werner

SDSU Extension Circulars

In South Dakota, average annual precipitation ranges from less than 13 inches to nearly 30 inches, generally increasing from west to east (fig. 6.1). However, all regions of South Dakota can experience drought. Irrigation can reduce a crop’s dependence on natural rainfall and improve yields. To best capitalize on investment in irrigation equipment, it has been suggested that one should increase plant populations on irrigated land by 2,000 to 3,000 plants per acre (Aldrich et al. 1975). This chapter discusses how much irrigation water to apply and how to manage the salts contained in the water. If you are planning …

Spatial Patterns, Population Genetics, And Multiple Paternity Of The Freshwater Mussel Villosa Iris, (Lea 1829), Allison Marie Asher

Student Theses and Dissertations

To better understand the migration and spatial patterns, population dynamics, population genetics, and paternity in Villosa iris, I conducted studies in the Spring (SR) and South Fork Spring (SFSR) rivers in 2006 and 2007. Population estimates were 166 ± 32 and 381 ± 37 individuals for SFSR1 and SR1, respectively. Home range and migration rates were small and male and female spatial patterns corresponded with spawning patterns, with more males found upstream of non-gravid females. Population genetic structuring was low between all populations (Fst= 0.028), genetic diversity was lower in the SFSR (Fst= 0.012) than in …

Minimizing Vessel Strikes To Endangered Whales: A Crash Course In Conservation Science And Policy, David N. Wiley, Moira W. Brown May 2009

Minimizing Vessel Strikes To Endangered Whales: A Crash Course In Conservation Science And Policy, David N. Wiley, Moira W. Brown

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered of all large whales: about 350-400 individuals remain. Species recovery is, in part, contingent on reducing vessel-strike mortality. Our science-based conservation program resulted in three efforts specifically designed to minimize the risk of lethal vessel-strikes of endangered baleen whales without compromising vessel navigation and safety. In Atlantic Canada, the Bay of Fundy Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) was relocated to reduce the risk of lethal vessel strikes by 90% where the original outbound lane of the TSS intersected the Right Whale Conservation Area, and an Area To Be Avoided (ATBA) …

Combinatorial Models For Dna Rearrangements In Ciliates, Angela Angeleska May 2009

Combinatorial Models For Dna Rearrangements In Ciliates, Angela Angeleska

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Motivated by genome rearrangements that take place in some species of ciliates we introduce a combinatorial model for these processes based on spatial graphs. This model builds up on two earlier models for pointer-guided DNA recombination (intramolecular model introduced in [22, 23] and intermolecular model introduced in [35, 36]) and is influenced by a molecular model for RNA guided DNA recombination (introduced in [2]).

Despite their differences, the intermolecular and intramolecular model formalize the recombination events through rewriting operations applied on formal words. Both models predict the same set of molecules as a result of correct rearrangement. Here, we give …

Tillage equipment that has been used includes molderboard plows, discs, cultivators, rippers, and chisel plows. Conservation practices and innovations in production tools (i.e., planters, herbicides, and genetically modified crops) provide farmers with the opportunity to minimize losses.

Strategic Idealizations Of Science To Oppose Environmenal Regulation: A Case Study Of Five Tmdl Controversies, David S. Caudill, Donald E. Curley May 2009

Strategic Idealizations Of Science To Oppose Environmenal Regulation: A Case Study Of Five Tmdl Controversies, David S. Caudill, Donald E. Curley

Working Paper Series

Proponents of environmental regulation have catalogued various strategies used by takeholders to delay or weaken regulatory efforts, including (1) manufacturing or magnifying uncertainty; (2) demanding “sound science” (and thereby imposing unreasonable standards of evidence); and (3) data quality initiatives that permit deconstruction of credible studies by highlighting inevitable assumptions, funding sources, and areas for further research. Such strategies can be termed “idealizations” of science insofar as they rely on an unrealistic image of good science as somehow capable of avoiding tentative conclusions, institutional interests, consensual assumptions, and the need for further research.

The question remains, however, when does an argument …

Transcriptional Analysis Of The Unicellular, Diazotrophic Cyanobacterium Cyanothece Atcc 51142 Grown Under Short Day/Night Cycles., Jörg Toepel, Jason Mcdermott, Tina C. Summerfield, Louis A. Sherman

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Cyanothece sp. strain ATCC 51142 is a unicellular, diazotrophic cyanobacterium that demonstrates extensive metabolic periodicities of photosynthesis, respiration, and nitrogen fixation when grown under N2-fixing conditions. We have performed a global transcription analysis of this organism using 6 h light:dark (L:D) cycles in order to determine the response of the cell to these conditions and to differentiate between diurnal and circadian-regulated genes. In addition, we used a context-likelihood of relatedness (CLR) analysis with these data and those from 2 d L:D and L:D plus continuous light experiments to better differentiate between diurnal and circadian-regulated genes. Cyanothece sp. acclimated …

Anecdotes, James Bellucci May 2009

Anecdotes, James Bellucci

Theses

Anecdotes is a set of illustrations derived from Biblical text, scientific discovery and self-created stories. This body of work questions these texts through the temporal nature of the anecdotal storytelling convention. The images, created through the manipulation of three-dimensional materials such as paper, cardboard, string, and fabrics in constructed sets and photographically represented as a two-dimensional images, question the authenticity of the grand narrative. The images explore scientific discoveries along with religious beliefs revealing my reservations, perceptions, and sentiments toward both. In considering my changing knowledge and beliefs from childhood into adulthood, Anecdotes deconstructs these conflicting narratives into a directorial …

Recombinant Aav Gene Therapy And Delivery, Nikisha Christine Carty May 2009

Recombinant Aav Gene Therapy And Delivery, Nikisha Christine Carty

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD), first characterized in the early 20th century, is a common form of dementia which can occur as a result of genetic mutations in the genes encoding presenilin 1, presenilin 2, or amyloid precursor protein (APP). These genetic alterations can accelerate the pathological characteristics of AD, including the formation of extracellular neuritic plaques composed of amyloid beta peptides and the formation of intracellular neurofibrillary tangles consisting of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. Ultimately, AD results in gross neuron loss in the brain which is evidenced clinically as a progressive decline in mental capacity. A strong body of scientific evidence has …

Shyness In The Context Of Reduced Fear Of Negative Evaluation And Selffocus: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Freda S. Watson May 2009

Shyness In The Context Of Reduced Fear Of Negative Evaluation And Selffocus: A Mixed Methods Case Study, Freda S. Watson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This mixed methods case study examined the effect of reduced fear of negative evaluation and self focus on behaviors related to shyness in a church environment. A sample of 239 members, regular attenders, and visitors completed a survey, consisting of the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation-Straightforward (BFNE-S) Scale; two checklists measuring perceived acceptance and levels of comfort in situations known to be difficult for shy people; and extended response questions regarding thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in six church situations.

Confirmatory factor analysis revealed the BFNE-S (General and Context-specific) had acceptable fit compared with previous studies, and descriptive statistics were similar …

The Experience Of Grey, Andrew Super May 2009

The Experience Of Grey, Andrew Super

Theses

This text is an accompaniment to an endeavor spanning approximately thirteen months in which I used photographic and literary processes to create documents concerning my history. These nearly universal processes were chosen because of their correlative nature. Images are read in a similar fashion to texts and both facilitate discourse. This thesis is an investigation on a personal level about the manner in which experiences are had, documented, and in many ways conditioned. The photographs that amount to the physical portion of this thesis explore the personally anecdotal within the context of generalized methods of documentation. In this work I …

Anatomy And Function Of The African Clawed Frog Vocal System Is Altered By The Brominated Flame Retardant, Pbde-209, Lisa Rania Ganser May 2009

Anatomy And Function Of The African Clawed Frog Vocal System Is Altered By The Brominated Flame Retardant, Pbde-209, Lisa Rania Ganser

Open Access Dissertations

Vocal communication allows animals to express distress, territoriality, and most important, to attract mates. In the African Clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, vocal communication is unique, because not only do males advertise for mates using elaborate click vocalizations, but also females are able to advertise their reproductive readiness by eliciting a "rapping" call. Sex differences in vocal repertoire match sex differences in vocal circuitry. During development, the vocal circuitry in the male grows increasingly sensitive to circulating androgens. Androgens induce tremendous growth in the cartilage and musculature of the peripheral vocal organ, the larynx. Net addition of synapses and motor fibers …

Best Management Practices For Corn Production In South Dakota: Seasonal Hazards—Frost, Hail, Drought, And Flooding, Robert G. Hall, Todd P. Trooien, Dennis P. Todey, David E. Clay

SDSU Extension Circulars

Conclusion: Weather conditions such as frost, hail, flood, or drought can severely reduce yields. Effects from these events are manageable to a certain extent, but loss can be expected when these events occur. The degree of loss depends on the severity of the event. Crop insurance has become a common component of corn production in the U.S.; the insurance provides the producer economic protection for uncontrollable events. Producers should consider crop insurance based on the consequences of crop loss.

Cannabinoids Induce Immunoglobulin Class Switching To Ige In B Lymphocytes, Marisela Agudelo May 2009

Cannabinoids Induce Immunoglobulin Class Switching To Ige In B Lymphocytes, Marisela Agudelo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cannabinoid treatment increases Th2 activity and previous reports showed B cells express the highest level of CB2 mRNA relative to other immune cells suggesting that cannabinoids play a critical role in B cell activation and maturation. To examine the direct effect of cannabinoids on B cell antibody class switching, mouse splenic B cells were purified by negative selection and cultured with IL4 and anti-CD40 in the presence or absence of the nonselective cannabinoid agonist, CP55940, or the CB1 selective agonist, methanandamide, or the CB2 selective agonist, JW015. The cultures were then analyzed at different times by flow cytometry for …

Decorin Is A Novel Antagonistic Ligand Of The Met Receptor., Silvia Goldoni, Ashley Humphries, Alexander Nyström, Sampurna Sattar, Rick T Owens, David J Mcquillan, Keith Ireton, Renato V Iozzo

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Decorin, a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan gene family, impedes tumor cell growth by down-regulating the epidermal growth factor receptor. Decorin has a complex binding repertoire, thus, we predicted that decorin would modulate the bioactivity of other tyrosine kinase receptors. We discovered that decorin binds directly and with high affinity (K(d) = approximately 1.5 nM) to Met, the receptor for hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Binding of decorin to Met is efficiently displaced by HGF and less efficiently by internalin B, a bacterial Met ligand. Interaction of decorin with Met induces transient receptor activation, recruitment of the E3 ubiquitin ligase …

Ionic Liquid-Mediated Sol-Gel Sorbents For Capillary Microextraction And Challenges In Glass Microfabrication, Anne M. Shearrow

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Three ionic liquids (ILs), trihexyltetradecylphosphonium tetrafluoroborate (TTPT), N-butyl-4-methylpyridinium tetrafluoroborate (BMPT), and 1-methyl-3- octylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (MOIC), were utilized to prepare sol- gel sorbent coatings. Non-polar polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polar poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), poly(tetrahydrofuran) (PolyTHF) and bis[(3-methyldimethoxy-silyl)propyl] polypropylene oxide (BMPO) polymers were employed to develop novel ionic liquidmediated sol- gel hybrid organic- inorganic sorbents. The novel sorbents were first tested as coatings for capillary microextraction off-line hyphenated to gas chromatography. To gain an understanding of the role of the ionic liquids in the sol-gel process, the preconcentration abilities of these novel coatings were investigated for several classes of compounds utilizing CME-GC. This …
