Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 69 - An Input Control Management System For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (Rliac), Department Of Fisheries Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

The Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (RLIAC), the Hon. Minister for Fisheries and the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia have commenced a process of assessing the options for future management of the Western Rock Lobster Fishery. As part of this assessment, an expert Panel has previously prepared an analysis of an optimal quota management system (QMS) suitable for the fishery. As the next step in the assessment of management options, RLIAC requested that an expert panel also advise them on the design characteristics of an improved input control management system (ICMS) for the fishery and to provide advice on the …

Migration-Selection Balance And Local Adaptation Of Mitochondrial Haplotypes In Rufous-Collared Sparrows (Zonotrichia Capensis) Along An Elevational Gradient, Zachary A. Cheviron, Robb T. Brumfield Jun 2009

Migration-Selection Balance And Local Adaptation Of Mitochondrial Haplotypes In Rufous-Collared Sparrows (Zonotrichia Capensis) Along An Elevational Gradient, Zachary A. Cheviron, Robb T. Brumfield

Faculty Publications

Variable selection pressures across heterogeneous landscapes can lead to local adaptation of populations. The extent of local adaptation depends on the interplay between natural selection and gene flow, but the nature of this relationship is complex. Gene flow can constrain local adaptation by eroding differentiation driven by natural selection, or local adaptation can itself constrain gene flow through selection against maladapted immigrants. Here we test for evidence that natural selection constrains gene flow among populations of a widespread passerine bird (Zonotrichia capensis) that are distributed along an elevational gradient in the Peruvian Andes. Using multilocus sequences and microsatellites screened in …

FindsiteLhm: A Threading-Based Approach To Ligand Homology Modeling, Michal Brylinski, Jeffrey Skolnick Jun 2009

FindsiteLhm: A Threading-Based Approach To Ligand Homology Modeling, Michal Brylinski, Jeffrey Skolnick

Faculty Publications

Ligand virtual screening is a widely used tool to assist in new pharmaceutical discovery. In practice, virtual screening approaches have a number of limitations, and the development of new methodologies is required. Previously, we showed that remotely related proteins identified by threading often share a common binding site occupied by chemically similar ligands. Here, we demonstrate that across an evolutionarily related, but distant family of proteins, the ligands that bind to the common binding site contain a set of strongly conserved anchor functional groups as well as a variable region that accounts for their binding specificity. Furthermore, the sequence and …

The Effect Of Larval Diet And Sex On Nectar Nicotine Feeding Preferences In Manduca Sexta (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae), David N. Sharp, Amanda J. Lentz-Ronning, Johanna Barron, Lynn S. Adler

Biology & Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications

The article offers information on the study conducted regarding the implication of larval diet and nectar nicotine feeding to the sexual behavior of Manduca Sexta. Researchers found that many of these lepidoptera interact with the same plant species, both herbivorous larvae and nectar-feeding adults. Moreover, they found that the said behavior paves the way to influence both pollination and herbivory in floral and foliar tissue.

High-Throughput Single Cell Arrays As A Novel Tool In Biopreservation, Kenneth L. Roach, Kevin R. King, Korkut Uygun, Steven C. Hand, Isaac S. Kohane, Martin L. Yarmush, Mehmet Toner

Faculty Publications

Microwell array cytometry is a novel high-throughput experimental technique that makes it possible to correlate pre-stress cell phenotypes and post-stress outcomes with single cell resolution. Because the cells are seeded in a high density grid of cell-sized microwells, thousands of individual cells can be tracked and imaged through manipulations as extreme as freezing or drying. Unlike flow cytometry, measurements can be made at multiple time points for the same set of cells. Unlike conventional image cytometry, image analysis is greatly simplified by arranging the cells in a spatially defined pattern and physically separating them from one another. To demonstrate the …

Sampling And Dynamics Of Pseudacteon Tricuspis (Diptera: Phoridae) In Louisiana, Donald C. Henne, Seth J. Johnson

Faculty Publications

The population dynamics ofa fire ant (Solenopsis invicta Buren) parasitoid (Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier) was studied in Louisiana. The objectives of this study were to understand the daily and seasonal population dynamics of P. tricuspis in the context of environmental variables, determine whether P. tricuspis populations were synchronized over local and regional scales, determine the sex ratios and frequency distributions of P. tricuspis at disturbed S. invicta mounds, and determine the minimum sample size and sampling methodology that would provide an estimate of the true relative abundance of P. tricuspis at any location. Daily patterns of relative abundance of P. tricuspis …

Sustainable Design: A Case Study In Energy Systems, Eugene Coyle, Marek Rebow Jun 2009

Sustainable Design: A Case Study In Energy Systems, Eugene Coyle, Marek Rebow

Books/Book chapters

Since the publication of the UN climate report in 2007, most countries now agree that recent climate change has occurred as a result of human intervention and that it will require fast and profound measures to reduce this negative imprint imposed upon nature. Central to this is the need to radically reduce CO2 emissions resulting from combustion of carbon-based energy resources to meet global energy demands. Greater measures must be taken to develop new non-combustion based technologies, in addition to using low-carbon energy resources. Increasing energy efficiency and using energy wisely will also feature in reducing emissions. Sustain-able Energy is …

Engineering Education In The Us And The Eu, Eugene Coyle Jun 2009

Engineering Education In The Us And The Eu, Eugene Coyle

Books/Book chapters

Systems for the education of engineers in the US and the EU differ in significant ways. In this chapter we describe and reflect upon differences in accreditation policies and procedures, curriculum structure and content, admissions criteria and student mobility. Within the US there is a surprising uniformity among both private and public university programmes in engineering education, due in large part to the acceptance of ABET’s (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) authority in setting standards for curriculum content. Within the EU there is greater programme variety, although some degree of harmonization is in the works due to the Bologna …

Development Of Gis-Based Chemical Distribution Maps From Sprayer Performance Data, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, Rodrigo S. Zandonadi, Scott A. Shearer Jun 2009

Development Of Gis-Based Chemical Distribution Maps From Sprayer Performance Data, Joe D. Luck, Santosh Pitla, Rodrigo S. Zandonadi, Scott A. Shearer

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Pesticide application is an essential practice on farms in Kentucky where glyphosate resistant crops and no-till farming strategies are becoming more popular. Off-rate pesticide application errors are the result of incorrect concentrations applied to an area of the field and may result from velocity changes along the spray boom while the sprayer is turning, pressure changes across the width of the spray boom, and changes in effective boom height due to undulating terrain. In an attempt to estimate potential errors resulting from sprayer turning movements, a method was developed to compare the differences in application areas between control sections across …
