Werneburg, Alisan Kahraman, Maria Eugenia Guicciardi, Xue Wei Meng, Shigeru Kohno, Vijay H. Shah, Scott H. Kaufmann, Mark A. Mcniven, Gregory J. Gores

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) cytotoxicity in hepatocellular carcinoma cells is mediated by lysosomal permeabilization. Our aims were to determine which TRAIL receptor, death receptor (DR) 4 or DR5, mediates lysosomal permeabilization and assess whether receptor endocytosis followed by trafficking to lysosomes contributes in this process.

METHODS: TRAIL ligand internalization in Huh-7 cells was examined by confocal microscopy using Flag-tagged TRAIL, whereas DR4- and DR5-enhanced green fluorescent protein internalization was assessed by total internal reflection microscopy. Clathrin-dependent endocytosis was inhibited by expressing dominant negative dynamin.

RESULTS: Although Huh-7 cells express both TRAIL receptors, short hairpin RNA …

Gaussian Perturbations Of Circle Maps: A Spectral Approach, John Mayberry Jun 2009

Gaussian Perturbations Of Circle Maps: A Spectral Approach, John Mayberry

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

In this work, we examine spectral properties of Markov transition operators corresponding to Gaussian perturbations of discrete time dynamical systems on the circle. We develop a method for calculating asymptotic expressions for eigenvalues (in the zero noise limit) and show that changes to the number or period of stable orbits for the deterministic system correspond to changes in the number of limiting modulus 1 eigenvalues of the transition operator for the perturbed process. We call this phenomenon a λ-bifurcation. Asymptotic expressions for the corresponding eigenfunctions and eigenmeasures are also derived and are related to Hermite functions. © Institute of Mathematical …

When Sergeant Dayne Darren Dhanoolal of Columbus, Georgia, died on March 31, 2008, while serving in Iraq, Kynesha Dhanoolal, his widow, hoped to be able to fulfill his expressed wish of having children.' She obtained a temporary restraining order in federal court to prevent the military from embalminp Sergeant Dhanoolal until someone extracted and froze samples of his sperm. Mrs. Dhanoolal planned to be artificially inseminated with the sperm as early as that summer. While this may sound like the stuff of science fiction, science and technology no longer limit human reproduction to the act of sexual intercourse. Couples today …

Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Here we review the clinical and translational implications of the caveolin gene family for understanding the pathogenesis of human diseases, including breast and prostate cancers, pulmonary hypertension, cardiomyopathy, diabetes, and muscular dystrophy. Detailed phenotypic analysis of caveolin knockout mice has served to highlight the crucial role of a caveolin deficiency in the pathogenesis of many human disease processes. Mutations in the human caveolin genes are associated with a number of established genetic disorders (such as breast cancer, lipodystrophy, muscular dystrophy, and cardiomyopathy), making the caveolins important and novel targets for drug development. The implementation of new strategies for caveolin replacement …

Sample Size Estimation While Controlling False Discovery Rate For Microarray Experiments Using The Ssize.Fdr Package, Megan Orr, Peng Liu Jun 2009

Sample Size Estimation While Controlling False Discovery Rate For Microarray Experiments Using The Ssize.Fdr Package, Megan Orr, Peng Liu

The R Journal

Microarray experiments are becoming more and more popular and critical in many biological disciplines. As in any statistical experiment, appropriate experimental design is essential for reliable statistical inference, and sample size has a crucial role in experimental design. Because microarray experiments are rather costly, it is important to have an adequate sample size that will achieve a desired power with out wasting resources.

For a given microarray data set, thousands of hypotheses, one for each gene, are simultaneously tested. Storey and Tibshirani (2003) argue that con trolling false discovery rate (FDR) is more reasonable and more powerful than controlling family-wise …

The Hwriter Package: Composing Html Documents With R Objects, Gregoire Pau, Wolfgang Huber

The R Journal

HTML documents are structured documents made of diverse elements such as paragraphs, sections, columns, figures and tables organized in a hierarchical layout. Combination of HTML documents and hyperlinking is useful to report analysis results; for example, in the package array Quality Metrics (Kauffmannetal., 2009), estimating the quality of mi croarray data sets and cellHTS2(Boutrosetal.,2006), performing the analysis of cell-based screens.

There are several tools for exporting data from R into HTML documents. The package R2HTML is able to render a large diversity of R objects in HTML but does not easily support combining them in a structured layout and …

Beetle Species Diversity In The Lesser Antilles Islands: How Many Species Are Really There?, Stewart B. Peck Jun 2009

Beetle Species Diversity In The Lesser Antilles Islands: How Many Species Are Really There?, Stewart B. Peck

Insecta Mundi

Recent extensive and intensive field work by the team of M. A. Ivie on the Lesser Antillean island of Montserrat suggests that a mean of 827 beetle species may be expected on that island. This datum makes possible the generation of hypotheses of the probable beetle species diversity on other islands of the Lesser Antilles as a function of the areas of the islands. Figures are given for the presently known, estimated total, and estimated number of unknown species for each principal island. This predicts that many hundreds (if not thousands) of beetle species remain to be discovered. This is …

Background: In recent years, several stochastic simulation algorithms have been developed to generate Monte Carlo trajectories that describe the time evolution of the behavior of biomolecular reaction networks. However, the effects of various stochastic simulation and data analysis conditions on the observed dynamics of complex biomolecular reaction networks have not recieved much attention. In order to investigate these issues, we employed a a software package developed in out group, called Biomolecular Network Simulator (BNS), to simulate and analyze the behavior of such systems. The behavior of a hypothetical two gene in vitro transcription-translation reaction network is investigated using the Gillespie …

Best Practices And The State Of Information Security, Kevin Cronin Jun 2009

Best Practices And The State Of Information Security, Kevin Cronin

Chicago-Kent Law Review

The forces of globalization, together with widely available industry standards and best practices, and heightened state legislative activity, are driving the U.S. towards a more unified approach to data security. But the success of this unified approach requires more than free market efficiency and innovation. In order to maintain a state of evolutionary equilibrium in the global information economy, the U.S. must move from a fragmented approach towards data security and privacy standards, towards a more comprehensive set of standards with new penalties and effective enforcement, to better reflect the inherent value of personal data in today's global marketplace.

Kissing In Marital And Cohabiting Relationships: Effects On Blood Lipids, Stress, And Relationship Satisfaction, Justin P. Boren, Kory Floyd, Annegret F. Hannawa, Colin Hesse, Breanna Mcewan, Alice E. Veksler

Communication

Affection exchange theory and previous research suggest that affectionate behavior has stress-ameliorating effects. On this basis, we hypothesized that increasing affectionate behavior would effect improvements in physical and psychological conditions known to be exacerbated by stress. This study tested this proposition by examining the effects of increased romantic kissing on blood lipids, perceived stress, depression, and relationship satisfaction. Fifty-two healthy adults who were in marital or cohabiting romantic relationships provided self-report data for psychological outcomes and blood samples for hematological tests, and were then randomly assigned to experimental and control groups for a 6-week trial. Those in the experimental group …

Time-Frequency Analysis Of Intracardiac Electrogram, Erik Brockman

Master's Theses

The Cardiac Rhythm Management Division of St. Jude Medical specializes in the development of implantable cardioverter defibrillators that improve the quality of life for patients diagnosed with a variety of cardiac arrhythmias, especially for patients prone to sudden cardiac death. With the goal to improve detection of cardiac arrhythmias, this study explored the value in time-frequency analysis of intracardiac electrogram in four steps. The first two steps characterized, in the frequency domain, the waveforms that construct the cardiac cycle. The third step developed a new algorithm that putatively provides the least computationally expensive way to identifying cardiac waveforms in the …

Thriving In Today's Times: Childhood And Adolescent Depression, Ann Michelle Daniels

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Depression isn’t reserved only for adults. Depression can affect a child or teen’s appetite, sleep cycle, concentra¬tion, self-esteem, and relationships. It is not a child or teen being “difficult” on purpose, nor is it something the young person can “just snap out of.” Depression is a medical issue that must be addressed. Depression is linked to childhood and adolescent sui¬cides and runaways (National Mental Health Association). Suicide is the third leading cause of death in young people aged 15 to 24 and the fifth leading cause of death in 5- to 14-year-olds. A child or teen that has gone through …

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

brown midrib6 (bmr6) affects phenylpropanoid metabolism, resulting in reduced lignin concentrations and altered lignin composition in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). Recently, bmr6 plants were shown to have limited cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase activity (CAD; EC 1.1.1.195), the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of hydroxycinnamoyl aldehydes (monolignals) to monolignols. A candidate gene approach was taken to identify Bmr6. Two CAD genes (Sb02g024190 and Sb04g005950) were identified in the sorghum genome based on similarity to known CAD genes and through DNA sequencing a nonsense mutation was discovered in Sb04g005950 that results in a truncated protein lacking the NADPH-binding and C-terminal …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 68 - A Quota Management System For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (Rliac), Department Of Fisheries, Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

There has been much debate over the past two decades on the most appropriate long-term management framework for Western Australia’s Western Rock Lobster Fishery. More recently a debate over whether the fishery would be best managed under a Quota Management System (QMS) or the continuation of the current Input Control Management System (ICMS) culminated in an industry vote coordinated by the Western Rock Lobster Council (WRLC) in 2006 . The outcome of this vote resulted in industry support to retain the existing management system based on input controls2 , however, shortly after the vote there was a renewed level of …
