College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
This paper is based on the author's answer to a question from Theresa Notare, director of the Natural Family Planning Program of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, about what Catholic scientists and physicians can do to promote NFP and what the Catholic Church in the United States can do to help physicians and health professionals promote NFP. The paper reviews the Church's historical call for health professionals to study and to teach NFP methods, briefly analyzes the current state of NFP in Catholic health care, and provides an answer to Dr. Notare from the perspectives of research, education, and …

Verification Of Population Ring Protocols In Pat, Yang Liu, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Jianhua Zhao
Verification Of Population Ring Protocols In Pat, Yang Liu, Jun Pang, Jun Sun, Jianhua Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The population protocol model has emerged as an elegant paradigm for describing mobile ad hoc networks, consisting of a number of nodes that interact with each other to carry out a computation. One essential property of self-stabilizing population protocols is that all nodes must eventually converge to the correct output value, with respect to all possible initial configurations. It has been shown that fairness constraints play a crucial role in designing population protocols. The Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT) has been developed to perform verifications under different fairness constraints efficiently. In particular, it can handle global fairness, which is required for …
Active Learning For Causal Bayesian Network Structure With Non-Symmetrical Entropy, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong
Active Learning For Causal Bayesian Network Structure With Non-Symmetrical Entropy, Li G., Tze-Yun Leong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Causal knowledge is crucial for facilitating comprehension, diagnosis, prediction, and control in automated reasoning. Active learning in causal Bayesian networks involves interventions by manipulating specific variables, and observing the patterns of change over other variables to derive causal knowledge. In this paper, we propose a new active learning approach that supports interventions with node selection. Our method admits a node selection criterion based on non-symmetrical entropy from the current data and a stop criterion based on structure entropy of the resulting networks. We examine the technical challenges and practical issues involved. Experimental results on a set of benchmark Bayesian networks …

Liana Communities In Three Tropical Forest Types In Xishuangbanna, South-West China, Zhi-Quan Cai, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Yu-Long Zheng, Frans Bongers
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Lianas are an important growth form in tropical forests around the world. However, they are relatively unknown in south-east Asia. We identified, measured and determined the climbing and dispersal modes for lianas in five 0.1-ha plots in three common forest types at the tropical-temperate transitional zone in Xishuangbanna, SW China, namely, montane forest, evergreen broad-leaved forest and seasonally wet forest. Liana diversity in the three forests combined was high; we found a total of 147 liana species, representing 48 families and 75 genera. The mean density of lianas was 3407 ha-1 and varied significantly between the three forests, with 445, …

Our goal is to understand the assembly and regulation of flagellar dyneins, particularly the Chlamydomonas inner arm dynein called I1 dynein. Here, we focus on the uncharacterized I1-dynein IC IC97. The IC97 gene encodes a novel IC without notable structural domains. IC97 shares homology with the murine lung adenoma susceptibility 1 (Las1) protein—a candidate tumor suppressor gene implicated in lung tumorigenesis. Multiple, independent biochemical assays determined that IC97 interacts with both α- and β-tubulin subunits within the axoneme. I1-dynein assembly mutants suggest that IC97 interacts with both the IC138 and IC140 subunits within the I1-dynein motor complex and that IC97 …

On The Effectiveness Of Software Diversity: A Systematic Study On Real-World Vulnerabilities, Jin Han, Debin Gao, Robert H. Deng
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many systems have been introduced to detect software intrusions by comparing the outputs and behavior of diverse replicas when they are processing the same, potentially malicious, input. When these replicas are constructed using off-the-shelf software products, it is assumed that they are diverse and not compromised simultaneously under the same attack. In this paper, we analyze vulnerabilities published in 2007 to evaluate the extent to which this assumption is valid. We focus on vulnerabilities in application software, and show that the majority of these software products --- including those providing the same service (and therefore multiple software substitutes can be …
Biological Correlates Of Same Sex Erotic Fantasy And Date Of Birth: An Empirical Study Of 2d:4d Ratios, Rachel Lloyd
Biological Correlates Of Same Sex Erotic Fantasy And Date Of Birth: An Empirical Study Of 2d:4d Ratios, Rachel Lloyd
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
Based on extensive psychological and embryological research, neurohormonal theory proposes that males and females develop in sexually dimorphic patterns, in large part, because of differential androgen exposure during prenatal development (Kimmel & Weiner, 1995). Likewise, the theory suggests that variations in sexual orientation are also related to differential androgen exposure in prenatal life (Robinson & Manning, 2000). This study examined the ratio of the length of the second finger (2'1 digit) relative to the fourth finger (4th digit), also referred to as 2D:4D, and its relationship to same-sex erotic fantasy. These ratios are sexually dimorphic and are a presumed correlate …

A Possible Positive Feedback Modulation Of Acetylcholine Release Through The Stimulation Of Alpha-7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors On Bipolar Neurons In Pig Retina, Viralkumar M. Patel
Masters Theses
Glaucoma is associated with excitotoxicity in which increased glutamate release leads to apoptotic death of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Acetylcholine (ACh) has shown neuroprotection of RGCs through the stimulation of RGCs’ nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). The cholinergic amacrine cells are the only cells in retina which synthesize and release ACh. They get excitatory inputs from bipolar cells. The presence of α7nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7nAChRs) on the cholinergic amacrines, bipolar cells and RGCs is documented. Recently, stimulation of presynaptic nAChRs of cholinergic cells was shown to enhance ACh release in the rat superior cervical ganglion. Therefore, we hypothesized that α7nAChRs stimulation …

Complementary And Alternative Therapy Among American Indians Suffering From Depression And Anxiety, Rhea N. Allery
Complementary And Alternative Therapy Among American Indians Suffering From Depression And Anxiety, Rhea N. Allery
Theses and Dissertations
The American Indian population shows the highest percent of lifetime major depression at 19.17 percent compared to other ethnic groups in the United States. Anxiety among American Indians is ten times higher than other ethnic groups. Because of these statistics, American Indians also have a suicide rate that is 1.5 times higher than the national average. Unfortunately, due to a lack of funding and qualified health care provides for American Indians, improper and insufficient diagnosing and treatment for these diseases causes burden for suffers and their families. Several studies suggest that American Indians are the highest users of complementary and …

Heterologous Expression And Purification Of Vibrio Proteolyticus (Aeromonas Proteolytica) Aminopeptidase: A Rapid Protocol, Mariam Hartley, Brian Bennett
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
Metalloaminopeptidases (mAPs) are enzymes that are involved in HIV infectivity, tumor growth and metastasis, angiogenesis, and bacterial infection. Investigation of structure–function relationships in mAPs is a prerequisite to rational design of anti-mAP chemotherapeutics. The most intensively studied member of the biomedically important dinuclear mAPs is the prototypical secreted Vibrio proteolyticus di-zinc aminopeptidase (VpAP). The wild-type enzyme is readily purified from the supernatant of cultures of V. proteolyticus, but recombinant variants require expression in Escherichia coli. A greatly improved system for the purification of recombinant VpAP is described. A VpAP-(His)6 polypeptide, containing an N-terminal propeptide, and a C-terminal …
