Electronic Image Stabilization For Mobile Robotic Vision Systems, Michael John Smith Sep 2009

Electronic Image Stabilization For Mobile Robotic Vision Systems, Michael John Smith

Theses and Dissertations

When a camera is affixed on a dynamic mobile robot, image stabilization is the first step towards more complex analysis on the video feed. This thesis presents a novel electronic image stabilization (EIS) algorithm for small inexpensive highly dynamic mobile robotic platforms with onboard camera systems. The algorithm combines optical flow motion parameter estimation with angular rate data provided by a strapdown inertial measurement unit (IMU). A discrete Kalman filter in feedforward configuration is used for optimal fusion of the two data sources. Performance evaluations are conducted by a simulated video truth model (capturing the effects of image translation, rotation, …

Developers, The State, And The Politics Of Private Property Rights, Donald Leffers Sep 2009

Developers, The State, And The Politics Of Private Property Rights, Donald Leffers

Journal of Law and Social Policy

This article uses a new institutionalist approach to investigate major land use conflicts and regional land use policy changes in the Toronto region that affected the property relations of land developers. Institutionalist approaches focus on the role of key actors, ideas, and strategies in influencing the trajectories of political institutions, and the confrontation of political and strategic maneuvering in the face of existing institutions and structures. Through comparison of the processes driving enactment of two major regional land use statutes—the Oak Ridge Moraine Conservation Act and the Greenbelt Act—this article pays close attention to the relationships between political actors and …

Sexual And Reproductive Decisions And Experiences Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids In Abuja, Nigeria, Stella C. Iwuagwu Sep 2009

Sexual And Reproductive Decisions And Experiences Of Women Living With Hiv/Aids In Abuja, Nigeria, Stella C. Iwuagwu

Dissertations

Over 60% of those living with HIV/AIDS are women, the majority of them in their sexual and reproductive years (UNAIDS, 2006). With antiretroviral (ARV) drugs, most of them are living longer and healthier to engage in sexual and reproductive activities (WHO, 2006). This study explored the sexual and reproductive decisions and experiences of women living with HIV/AIDS (WLWHA) in Abuja, Nigeria. Only those who became pregnant and had a child after being diagnosed with HIV participated in the study.

The study was an interview based qualitative research. The design of the interview guide was informed by the PEN-3 Model (Airhihenbuwa, …

Who Decides What Number Of Children Is "Right"?, June Carbone Sep 2009

Who Decides What Number Of Children Is "Right"?, June Carbone

NULR Online

I agree with Professors Cahn and Collins that “eight is enough.” I am perhaps more skeptical than they are about assisting Nadya Suleman, a mother who already has six children, to have more. I wonder whose funds financed fertility treatments for a single, unemployed mom on disability benefits, and, perhaps even more critically, who will fund the children’s ongoing care. I am certainly concerned about the dubious ethical standards of the doctor who provided the reproductive care. But I also have serious reservations about anyone choosing to impose my views—or those of others—on the country as a whole.

I therefore …

Detection Of Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases In Patients With Celiac Disease, Rana S. Aboud, Haidar J. Mohammad, Nawal M. Jawad Sep 2009

Detection Of Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases In Patients With Celiac Disease, Rana S. Aboud, Haidar J. Mohammad, Nawal M. Jawad

Baghdad Science Journal

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder induced by gluten intake in genetically susceptible individuals. The incidence of celiac disease in various autoimmune disorders is increased 10-30 fold in comparison to the general population and the prevalence of celiac disease was noted to be 2-5% in autoimmune thyroid disease. To detect the autoimmune thyroid disease in patients with celiac disease, we investigated 22 patients suspected with celiac disease of age 1-13 years old and 20 healthy controls. IgA and IgG antigliadin antibodies were measured in serum with celiac disease sample. The patients which were positive to gliadin antibody were carried out …

Decaying Of The Marble And Limestone Monuments In The Urban Environment. Case Studies From Saint Petersburg, Russia, Olga V. Frank-Kamenetskaya, Dmitrii Yu Vlasov, Marina S. Zelenskaya, Irina V. Knauf, Maryia A. Timasheva Sep 2009

Decaying Of The Marble And Limestone Monuments In The Urban Environment. Case Studies From Saint Petersburg, Russia, Olga V. Frank-Kamenetskaya, Dmitrii Yu Vlasov, Marina S. Zelenskaya, Irina V. Knauf, Maryia A. Timasheva

Studia UBB Geologia

The results of a long-lasting research of sulphation process, which causes an essential deterioration of marble and limestone monuments in Saint Petersburg are reported. Based on a variety of field and analytical methods we can show that the decay process forming a gypsum-rich patina depends mainly on the local environment, the moisture accumulation, and is connected with the fissuring and porosity of the rock and the relief of a monument. Three main stages of gypsum-rich patina formation in the presence of microorganisms were revealed.

Deterioration Of Carbonate Rocks Used For Archeological Monuments In Tauric Chersonesos (Crimea), Alexander V. Mosyagin, Irina V. Knauf, Marina S. Zelenskaya Sep 2009

Deterioration Of Carbonate Rocks Used For Archeological Monuments In Tauric Chersonesos (Crimea), Alexander V. Mosyagin, Irina V. Knauf, Marina S. Zelenskaya

Studia UBB Geologia

The paper presents the mineralogy and petrography of the Proconesian marble and Chersonesian limestone, used as building materials from Antiquity to the medieval times in the Tauric Chersonesos, Crimea. The deterioration process, due to the modern time’s pollution and the climatic factors, is represented by forming of mainly gypsum-rich patina. The ubiquitous presence of micromycetes favors the stone decay.

Tropical Dry Forest Succession And The Contribution Of Lianas To Wood Area Index (Wai), Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa, Margaret Kalacska, Mario Marcos Do Espirito-Santo, G. Wilson Fernandes, Stefan A. Schnitzer Sep 2009

Tropical Dry Forest Succession And The Contribution Of Lianas To Wood Area Index (Wai), Arturo Sanchez-Azofeifa, Margaret Kalacska, Mario Marcos Do Espirito-Santo, G. Wilson Fernandes, Stefan A. Schnitzer

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The transmission and interception of light through the canopy is an important indicator of forest productivity in tropical forest ecosystems, and the amount of light that eventually reaches the forest floor is influenced by its interactions with leaves, branches, fruits, and flowers among many different canopy elements. While most studies of forest canopy light interception focus on leaf area index (LAI), very few studies have examined wood area index (WAI), which may account for a substantial component of light interception in tropical forests. The influence of lianas on the interception of light and their overall contribution to WAI is a …

Transient Studies On Rna Interference And Coat Protein-Mediated Resistance To Cassava Brown Streak Disease, Emmanuel Ogwok Sep 2009

Transient Studies On Rna Interference And Coat Protein-Mediated Resistance To Cassava Brown Streak Disease, Emmanuel Ogwok

Theses

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important staple and cash crop in Africa, Latin America and Asia. In east and southern Africa, cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) caused by cassava brown streak virus (CBSV) is associated with significant losses in cassava production. Previously, the disease was prevalent only along coastal eastern and southern Africa, but it recently emerged in Uganda and is spreading rapidly in the country as well as in neighboring countries. Apart from a few cultivars that have shown tolerance to CBSV in Tanzania, no effective resistance to CBSV has been developed and deployed to date. The full …
