Preliminary Phytochemical And Pharmacognostic Studies Of Holoptelea Integrifolia Roxb., Benjamin Jeya Rathna Kumar P, Christopher Patrick Kiladi S

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Systematic and detailed pharmacognostical studies have been performed on an important medicinal plant, Holoptelea integrifolia Roxb. (Ulmaceae). This species is used traditionally for the treatment of edema, diabetes, leprosy, skin diseases, intestinal disorders and piles. The present investigation deals with the internal structures of the leaf and stem, which have been studied and photographed. Fluorescence characteristics of the leaf and stem powder and the extracts of the leaves in various solvents have been compared along with quantitative values, ash values and extractive values. Preliminary phytochemical screenings of the extracts leaf and stem have also been performed and results are recorded …

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Drug research has enriched human life in many ways. The health care and resulting social and economic benefits of new drugs to society are most remarkable, are quite well recognized. Drug research has been the driving force for many basic scientific developments, such as that of many new synthetic methods, of the understanding of the physiology and pharmacology of biological systems and has contributed much too molecular recognition. The Uttarakhand Himalayas have a great wealth of medicinal plants and traditional medicinal knowledge. The medicinal plant that has been widely used as veterinary ethno-medicine in Uttarakhand region has been studied. These …

Profile: Renewable And Sustainable, University Relations Oct 2009

Profile: Renewable And Sustainable, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

Most of you are aware of the Morris campus’s new tag line—a renewable, sustainable education. The phrase was one result of an intensive marketing and branding effort that has engaged members of our community—including some of you—for the past two years. In order to be effective, a tag line has to be authentic; it has to be more than just a gimmick. It has to capture the “essence” of what we are all about. And I believe that this phrase does just that.

Christian Missions And Colonial Empires Reconsidered: A Black Evangelist In West Africa, 1766-1816, Edward E. Andrews

History & Classics Faculty Publications

The article presents an exploration into the work of the late 18th-century West African Anglican missionary Philip Quaque and the relationship between imperialism and religion during the colonial era. The author points out and criticizes the dominant historiographical trend of over-conflating White imperialism with Christian missions. Quaque's life and writings are examined, highlighting the lack of forced cultural conversion within his missionary activities. Discussion is also given regarding the complex identity dynamics within Quaque as a Christian and as an African.

South Dakota Flax Variety Evaluations 2009, Kathleen Grady, Lee Gilbertson Oct 2009

South Dakota Flax Variety Evaluations 2009, Kathleen Grady, Lee Gilbertson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The success of flax production is affected by choice of variety. Variety characteristics such as seed yield, oil content, disease resistance, and maturity should be examined carefully when deciding which variety or varieties to plant. In some cases oil content or other traits may offset a yield advantage.

Biomedical Engineering

Stress fractures are overuse injuries of bone that affect elite athletes and military recruits. One response of cortical bone to stress fracture is to lay down periosteal callus. The objectives of this study were to determine if material properties are different among bones with different stages of stress fracture callus, at both a callus site and at a distal site. Cortical specimens were mechanically tested to determine their stress–strain response. Material property differences were examined using nonparametric and regression analyses. At the callus site, material properties were low during the earliest stages of callus, higher with increasing callus maturity, but …

The Impact Of Brazil’S Bolsa Familia Program On Food Security In Santo Antônio De Jesus, Bahia, Mario Felipe Dest Oct 2009

The Impact Of Brazil’S Bolsa Familia Program On Food Security In Santo Antônio De Jesus, Bahia, Mario Felipe Dest

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the impact that the Bolsa Família Program has on the level of food security within an impoverished community of Santo Antônio de Jesus. The issue of food security is important because a person’s overall health worsens as a result of not having access to a healthy and well balanced diet. As a result of these negative health aspects, one’s capacity to do work, learn, and take care of one’s family are all affected. This relationship between nutrition and social situations is the focus of this study, which will be used to …

Venn, A Tool For Titrating Sequence Conservation Onto Protein Structures, Jay Vyas, Michael R. Gryk, Martin R. Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Residue conservation is an important, established method for inferring protein function, modularity and specificity. It is important to recognize that it is the 3D spatial orientation of residues that drives sequence conservation. Considering this, we have built a new computational tool, VENN that allows researchers to interactively and graphically titrate sequence homology onto surface representations of protein structures. Our proposed titration strategies reveal critical details that are not readily identified using other existing tools. Analyses of a bZIP transcription factor and receptor recognition of Fibroblast Growth Factor using VENN revealed key specificity determinants. Weblink: http://sbtools.uchc.edu/venn/.

Lloyd Burgess Sharp, Julie A. Carlson

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Lloyd Burgess Sharp first coined the term outdoor education in the 1943 issue of Extending Education (Knapp, 2002), a publication of the honor society, Kappa Delta Pi.

That year, however, did not mark the beginning of the field as it is known today. His work in sparking and shaping the outdoor education movement began years earlier as a graduate student at Columbia University in New York. During his master’s and doctorate programs in physical education, he studied under William Heard Kilpatrick, John Dewey, and other renowned professors at the time who were experimenting with combining leadership, camping, and educational philosophies …

Estatura Y Condiciones De Vida En Tiempos De Morelos, Amilcar Challú

History Faculty Publications
