River Channel Stability And Sediment Characteristics In The Upper White River Basin, Robert T. Pavlowsky, Derek J. Martin Oct 2009

River Channel Stability And Sediment Characteristics In The Upper White River Basin, Robert T. Pavlowsky, Derek J. Martin

OEWRI Technical Reports

In summer 2009, geomorphic channel assessments were completed for 10 sites in the Upper White River Basin in support of a long-term water quality monitoring program implemented by the Upper White River Basin Foundation. This report describes the results of these assessments. At each site, information was collected on slope and pool conditions, channel capacity and sediment transport, degree of bank erosion, occurrence of bar and floodplain features, and sediment size and distribution. The channels examined were generally typical of Ozarks rivers and tend to have narrow valleys and strong bedrock control near the surface. This valley condition tends to …

The Leishmania Donovani Lipophosphoglycan Excludes The Vesicular Proton-Atpase From Phagosomes By Impairing The Recruitment Of Synaptotagmin V, Adrien F. Vinet, Mitsunori Fukuda, Salvatore J. Turco, Albert Descoteaux Oct 2009

The Leishmania Donovani Lipophosphoglycan Excludes The Vesicular Proton-Atpase From Phagosomes By Impairing The Recruitment Of Synaptotagmin V, Adrien F. Vinet, Mitsunori Fukuda, Salvatore J. Turco, Albert Descoteaux

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We recently showed that the exocytosis regulator Synaptotagmin (Syt) V is recruited to the nascent phagosome and remains associated throughout the maturation process. In this study, we investigated the possibility that Syt V plays a role in regulating interactions between the phagosome and the endocytic organelles. Silencing of Syt V by RNA interference revealed that Syt V contributes to phagolysosome biogenesis by regulating the acquisition of cathepsin D and the vesicular proton-ATPase. In contrast, recruitment of cathepsin B, the early endosomal marker EEA1 and the lysosomal marker LAMP1 to phagosomes was normal in the absence of Syt V. As Leishmania …

Living With Sugar: Socioeconomic Status And Cultural Beliefs About Type 2 Diabetes Among Afro-Caribbean Women, Chrystal A.S Smith Oct 2009

Living With Sugar: Socioeconomic Status And Cultural Beliefs About Type 2 Diabetes Among Afro-Caribbean Women, Chrystal A.S Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In the U.S., individuals of Afro-Caribbean and Latino descent are two to three times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than non-Hispanic whites. Caribbean and Latin America migrants, particularly minority women bear a disproportionate burden of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors. The purpose of this research is to investigate if Afro-Caribbean women share a cultural belief model about type 2 diabetes and how this belief model, along with structural barriers to health care, influence disease risk and management.

A sample of 40 women, primarily Jamaican and Trinidadian, 35 to 90 years of age previously diagnosed with type …

A Phylogenetic Study Of The Old World Asclepiadinae (Apocynaceae) Based On Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna Sequence Data, David Chuba Oct 2009

A Phylogenetic Study Of The Old World Asclepiadinae (Apocynaceae) Based On Chloroplast And Nuclear Dna Sequence Data, David Chuba

Dissertations and Theses

Relationships within the African Asclepias generic complex (Asclepiadinae, Apocynaceae) have for a long time been only a matter of intuitive speculation and generic delimitations have been diverse and rather contentious. Generic delimitation in this group has been based on morphological characters that are usually not exclusive to any particular clade or genus. The difficulty of identifying taxonomically useful morphological characters for inferring generic delimitations has led to differences in the emphasized characters by different taxonomists. This study is aimed at understanding phylogenetic relationships of species within the African Asclepias complex based upon the nuclear PgiC and three chloroplast DNA regions, …

Why We Don't Understand The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds Oct 2009

Why We Don't Understand The Rule Of Law, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

This paper presents an assessment of current theories of law and their continuing failure to account in a convincing way for the rule of law as an ideal that guides and reassures modern democratic societies. It then explores the possibility that emerging understandings of human evolution and brain function may help us understand the process of convention making in a way that could reveal the underlying moral and epistemological context of law and allow us to identify a complete set of standards for the rule of law in human societies.

Dispersion Interactions Between Optically Anisotropic Cylinders At All Separations: Retardation Effects For Insulating And Semiconducting Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes, Roger H. French Oct 2009

Dispersion Interactions Between Optically Anisotropic Cylinders At All Separations: Retardation Effects For Insulating And Semiconducting Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

We derive the complete form of the van der Waals dispersion interaction between two infinitely long anisotropic semiconducting/insulating thin cylinders at all separations. The derivation is based on the general theory of dispersion interactions between anisotropic media as formulated in Munday et al. [Phys. Rev. A 71, 042102 (2005)]. This formulation is then used to calculate the dispersion interactions between a pair of single-walled carbon nanotubes at all separations and all angles. Nonretarded and retarded forms of the interactions are developed separately. The possibility of repulsive dispersion interactions and nonmonotonic dispersion interactions is discussed within the framework of the formulation.

Background: Genome sequencing projects have been completed for several species representing four highly diverged holometabolous insect orders, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Coleoptera, and Lepidoptera. The striking evolutionary diversity of insects argues a need for efficient methods to apply genome information from such models to genetically uncharacterized species. Constructing conserved synteny maps plays a crucial role in this task. Here, we demonstrate the use of fluorescence in situ hybridization with bacterial artificial chromosome probes as a powerful tool for physical mapping of genes and comparative genome analysis in Lepidoptera, which have numerous and morphologically uniform holokinetic chromosomes.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We isolated 214 clones …

Provenir Ontology: Towards A Framework For Escience Provenance Management, Satya S. Sahoo, Amit P. Sheth Oct 2009

Provenir Ontology: Towards A Framework For Escience Provenance Management, Satya S. Sahoo, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Provenance metadata describes the 'lineage' or history of an entity and necessary information to verify the quality of data, validate experiment protocols, and associate trust value with scientific results. eScience projects generate data and the associated provenance metadata in a distributed environment (such as myGrid) and on a very large scale that often precludes manual analysis. Given this scenario, provenance information should be, (a) interoperable across projects, research groups, and application domains, and (b) support analysis over large datasets using reasoning to discover implicit information. In this paper, we introduce an ontology-driven framework for eScience provenance management underpinned by an …

Measures Of Heart And Ventilatory Rates In Freely Moving Crayfish, Sonya M. Bierbower, Robin L. Cooper Oct 2009

Measures Of Heart And Ventilatory Rates In Freely Moving Crayfish, Sonya M. Bierbower, Robin L. Cooper

Biology Faculty Publications

The fear, flight or fight response serves as the fundamental physiological basis for examining an organism's awareness of its environment under an impending predator attack. Although it is not known whether invertebrates posses an autonomic nervous system identical to that of vertebrates, evidence shows invertebrates have a sympathetic-like response to regulate the internal environment and ready the organism to act behaviorally to a given stimuli. Furthermore, this physiological response can be feasibly measured and it acts as a biological index for the animal's internal state. Measurements of the physiological response can be directly related to internal and external stressors through …
