Interrogating Virginia Woolf and the British Suffrage Movement Gwen Trowbridge Anderson ABSTRACT Much has been written about Virginia Woolf's involvement with feminism and women's rights, but there has been far less exploration about her ties to suffrage. Many of her friends and family are involved in this exploration: Vanessa Stephen Bell, Ethel Smyth, and the Pankhursts (Emmeline, Sylvia, and Cristobel). Other important figures who are relevant to Woolf's work are Sonia Delaunay, Lewis Carroll, and Edmund Spenser. Important concepts like the New Woman, the suffrage movement, feminism, and women's rights are vital to understanding Woolf's involvement with suffrage. This dissertation …

Biological Control Of Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum Salicaria): Factors Affecting Galerucella Pusilla And Galerucella Calmariensis Establishment In Tidal Areas, Lynda Kathryn Moore

Galerucella pusilla and G. calmariensis have provided successful biological control of purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L.) in non-tidal areas but only marginal control in areas of tidal influence. While a previous study identified mechanical scour by tidal waters as the main cause of establishment failure, purple loosestrife stem density explained more than 80% of the variability in presence and absence of Galerucella at my study sites in the Columbia River Estuary. A logistic regression model using purple loosestrife stem density, elevation, and their interaction as predictors accurately predicted 92.5% of Galerucella presence or absence observations of a test data …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper investigated the relationship among preservation knowledge, perception and attitude of library personnel towards preservation of information resources in Nigerian federal university libraries. Simple random sampling technique was used to select twenty university libraries from the twenty four federal university libraries in Nigeria. All the 660 library personnel in the selected libraries constituted the study sample. Data was collected by a questionnaire administered on the 660 personnel out of which 510 copies were returned. The response rate was 77.3%. The study found that knowledge and perception of library personnel about preservation of information resources correlate significantly with their attitude …

A method is provided for producing a permeable membrane, comprising the steps of aligning a plurality of hollow nanotubules to form a mat, coating the mat with a continuous polymer matrix to form a membrane. The membrane is etched (a) to open the plurality of hollow nanotubules and form pores and (b) to oxidize the carboxyl groups to carboxylate groups. This paper proposes Poisson log-linear multilevel models to investigate population variability in sleep state transition rates. We specifically propose a Bayesian Poisson regression model that is more flexible, scalable to larger studies, and easily fit than other attempts in the literature. We further use hierarchical random effects to account for pairings of individuals and repeated measures within those individuals, as comparing diseased to non-diseased subjects while minimizing bias is of epidemiologic importance. We estimate essentially non-parametric piecewise constant hazards and smooth them, and allow for time varying covariates and segment of the night comparisons. Based on data collected from clinical trials and post-approval surveillance systems, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issues warnings to communicate increasingly dangerous and/ or preventable risks to doctors and their patients. The black box warning, the highest of all warnings issued by the FDA, emphasizes risks the FDA has deemed are critical to safe use of the drug. The warning has numerous implications for the pharmaceutical companies and physicians. A dynamic compartmental model was instantiated with recent epidemiological data from South Africa to compare the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different portfolios of interventions to prevent HIV infection over a twenty year time horizon. We hypothesized that portfolios which combined scaling up the delivery of highly active antiretroviral therapies (HAART), increasing availability of HIV screening and counseling, and establishing widespread circumcision campaigns would be the most effective …

Vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis or aneurysmal disease preferentially affect different parts of the arterial system. Despite this heterogeneous pattern of disease within the arterial system, the contribution of different smooth muscle cell phenotypes to this pattern has not been well studied. We investigated aortic disease susceptibility and epigenetic differences within different regions of the murine aorta. Quantitative analyses showed more numerous atherosclerotic plaques and larger aneurysms in the ascending aorta compared to the descending thoracic aorta in apoE-/- and fbn1C1039G/+ mice, respectively. Interferon-γ and transforming growth factor-β responses, characteristic of these disease processes, were greater in the ascending vs. …

Image formation via photoinduced fluorescence changes in a polymeric medium with two-photon fluorescence readout of a multi-layer structure. Fluorophore-containing polymers, possessing one or more basic functional groups, underwent protonation in the presence of a photoinduced acid generator upon exposure to a broad-band UV light source or fast-pulsed red to near-IR laser irradiation. Solution studies demonstrated formation of monoprotonated and diprotonated species upon irradiation, each resulting in distinctly different absorption and fluorescence properties. The fluorescence of the original, neutral, fluorophore was reduced upon monoprotonation leading to a concomitant increase in fluorescence at longer wavelengths due to the monoprotonated form, the basis …

Thousands rely on the water of Canandaigua Lake for drinking water, fishing, boating and swimming each year. The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council (CLWC) was formed with the goal of protecting the high quality of this water source. The CLWC has been monitoring the lake and its tributaries for thirteen years. The lake remains in good condition, but testing has revealed an overall increase in total phosphorus (TP) and total suspended solids (TSS). This study identifies potential TSS and TP sources in the Eelpot Creek subwatershed. This creek has some of the highest concentrations of these pollutants in the entire Canandaigua …

Modeling molecular structures is critical for understanding the principles that govern the behavior of molecules and for facilitating the exploration of potential pharmaceutical drugs and nanoscale designs. Biological molecules are flexible bodies that can adopt many different shapes (or conformations) until they reach a stable molecular state that is usually described by the minimum internal energy. A major challenge in modeling flexible molecules is the exponential explosion in computational complexity as the molecular size increases and many degrees of freedom are considered to represent the molecules' flexibility.
