Making Sense Of Drug Regulation: A Theory Of Law For Drug Control Policy , Kimani Paul-Emile Jan 2009

Making Sense Of Drug Regulation: A Theory Of Law For Drug Control Policy , Kimani Paul-Emile

Faculty Scholarship

This article advances a new theory of drug regulation that addresses two previously unexamined questions: how law-makers are able to regulate drugs differently irrespective of the dangers the drugs may pose and independent of their health effects, and the process followed to achieve this phenomenon. For example, although tobacco products are the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. they can be bought and sold legally by adults, while marijuana, a substantially safer drug, is subject to the highest level of drug control. This article posits a conceptual model for making sense of this dissonance and applies this model …

Mayer, Mashkoor A. Malik, Andrew B. Cooper, Holly Abeels, Jennifer K. Greene, Melissa Brodeur, Andrew A. Rosenberg

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

The recovery of benthic communities inside the western Gulf of Maine fishing closure area was evaluated by comparing invertebrate assemblages at sites inside and outside of the closure four to six years after the closure was established. The major restriction imposed by the closure was a year-round prohibition of bottom gillnets and otter trawls. A total of 163 seafloor sites (~half inside and half outside the closure) within a 515-km2 study area were sampled with some combination of Shipek grab, Wildco box corer, or underwater video. Bottom types ranged from mud (silt and clay) to boulders, and the effects of …

Endocrine Disrupting Compound Levels Of The Kishwaukee River Near The Northern Illinois University Community, Matthew James Kararo Jan 2009

Endocrine Disrupting Compound Levels Of The Kishwaukee River Near The Northern Illinois University Community, Matthew James Kararo

Honors Capstones

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDO) are quickly becoming an area of intensifying research across many scientific fields. EDCs come from non-point sources in most cases, but this research aims to narrow the source of at least a portion of the EDC levels presort in the Kishwaukee River to the community of students and faculty at Northern Illinois University in De Kalb, Illinois. Our working hypothesis is that detectable levels of EDCs in the effluent of a wastewater treatment place will fluctuate from relatively higher levels during the fall and spring semesters to relatively low levels during winter vacation. We tested for …

The Increase In Renal Sodium Excretion In Response To Angiotensin Ii Infusion In Exercised Female Rats Is Dependent On A Rise In Renal Perfusion Pressure, Karmon Janssen Jan 2009

The Increase In Renal Sodium Excretion In Response To Angiotensin Ii Infusion In Exercised Female Rats Is Dependent On A Rise In Renal Perfusion Pressure, Karmon Janssen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Prior studies in this lab have shown that chronically exercised female spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats excrete a greater amount of sodium in response to angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion than do sedentary rats. The current study determined if the difference in renal sodium excretion persisted when the renal perfusion pressure (RPP) was held constant. Female SHR and female WKY rats were separated into sedentary and exercised groups at 4 weeks of age. The exercise group voluntarily exercised for at least eight weeks using an exercise wheel and time/distance monitor. At 13 weeks of age or older, …

Information-Seeking Strategies Of Doctoral Students And Implications For Design Of The Graduate School Web Space, Debra Winter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation looks at the information-seeking practices of doctoral students in the context of their search for a doctoral program and considers the implications for design of the graduate school Web space. Of particular interest is the description of patterns of Web use and the practices related to students' preparation for interactions with technology, the nature of the interactions, and the thinking that occurs. An exploratory study that brings together hypertext theory, contextual, holistic approaches, and information behavior, this research includes a focus group of current undergraduate and graduate students to gather fresh details about information-seeking for a graduate program …

Using Calculus To Model The Growth Of L. Plantarum Bacteria, Erin Carey Jan 2009

Using Calculus To Model The Growth Of L. Plantarum Bacteria, Erin Carey

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

Experimental data for the growth of Lactobacillus plantarum bacteria have been obtained over time, creating the need for mathematical means to model this data. We use the Gompertz model because it is a sigmoid function for a time series, where growth is slowest at the start and end of a time period. The Gompertz model is especially useful because it defines specific parameters that characterize the S-shaped curve. In addition, the Gompertz model uses relative growth, which is the logarithm of the given population compared to the initial population. This reflects the fact that bacteria grow exponentially. The important parameters …

Infection Of A Homogeneous Population By A Known Bacterium, Arthur Maknenko Jan 2009

Infection Of A Homogeneous Population By A Known Bacterium, Arthur Maknenko

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

In order for the development of antibiotics and vaccines to be successful, the lifecycle and infection pattern of a pathogen must be studied well. In this paper, we study the rate of replication and the pattern of infection in a homogeneous population, which may or may not have an effective immunity or immunization program against the pathogen. We utilize three functions: one will determine the rate with which the pathogen replicates; the second will show the result of an infection by a single individual of a susceptible population without a removal rate; and the third will include the removal rate …

Arsenic And Growth Of Amphistegina Gibbosa, Elise Keister Jan 2009

Arsenic And Growth Of Amphistegina Gibbosa, Elise Keister

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

A laboratory tested various concentrations of arsenic on the growth of foraminifera and recorded their findings. Upon examination, the plotted probability density function for each of these trials resembled a similar shape. The plots were then characterized in a general model composed of linear segments. Using calculus, statistics such as the expected value, variance and standard deviation were calculated to interpret the collected data. The statistics revealed that arsenic limits the growth of ocean life.

Empirical Legal Studies Before 1940: A Bibliographic Essay, Herbert M. Kritzer Jan 2009

Empirical Legal Studies Before 1940: A Bibliographic Essay, Herbert M. Kritzer

Articles

The modern empirical legal studies movement has well-known antecedents in the law and society and law and economics traditions of the latter half of the 20th century. Less well known is the body of empirical research on legal phenomena from the period prior to World War II. This paper is an extensive bibliographic essay that surveys the English language empirical legal research from approximately 1940 and earlier. The essay is arranged around the themes in the research: criminal justice, civil justice (general studies of civil litigation, auto accident litigation and compensation, divorce, small claims, jurisdiction and procedure, civil juries), debt …

Global Chloroplast Phylogeny And Biogeography Of Bracken (Pteridium: Dennstaedtiaceae), Joshua P. Der, J. A. Thomson, J. K. Stratford, Paul G. Wolf

Biology Faculty Publications

Bracken ferns (genus Pteridium ) represent an ancient species complex with a natural worldwide distribution. Pteridium has historically been treated as comprising a single species, but recent treatments have recognized several related species. Phenotypic plasticity, geographically structured morphological variation, and geographically biased sampling have all contributed to taxonomic confusion in the genus. We sampled bracken specimens worldwide and used variable regions of the chloroplast genome to investigate phylogeography and reticulate evolution within the genus. Our results distinguish two major clades within Pteridium , a primarily northern hemisphere Laurasian/African clade, which includes all taxa currently assigned to P. aquilinum , and …

Economic Diversification And Sustainable Development: The Role Non-Timber Forest Products Play In The Monetization Of Kayapó Livelihoods , Laura C. Zanotti Jan 2009

Economic Diversification And Sustainable Development: The Role Non-Timber Forest Products Play In The Monetization Of Kayapó Livelihoods , Laura C. Zanotti

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper analyzes the level of market integration of a relatively isolated Kayapó community. The goal is to understand how the commercial networks devoted to non-timber forest products are affecting one community by including cash-income into the economic life of communities previously dominated by non-monetary transactions but currently dominated by a mix of monetary and non-monetary practices. Non-timber forest product projects are a much lauded and much criticized form of sustainable forestry management. This case study analyses different non-timber forest product projects in Aukre, a village that is part of the Kayapó Indigenous Territories, Brazil. Th is article identifi es …

Teetering Towards Economic Sustainability: Alternatives For Commercial Fishermen, Barbara Jones Jan 2009

Teetering Towards Economic Sustainability: Alternatives For Commercial Fishermen, Barbara Jones

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Sustainable fishing has become a challenging problem for commercial fishermen all over the world. Many efforts to pursue a livelihood based on commercially harvesting fish suffer from catch limits and closings intended to protect diminishing fish resources; rising prices for waterfront real estate that currently houses their home ports; and competition from recreational fishermen. In order to continue a commercial fishing way of life, fishermen are resorting to what they are told represent economic sustainable alternatives to fishing, including aquaculture, retail markets, educational/museum facilities, restaurants, and parks. Yet, can a fisherman remain a fisherman if he is seen as an …

Subsistence And Seasonality At A Late Prehistoric House Pit In Northwest Alaska, Scott Shirar Jan 2009

Subsistence And Seasonality At A Late Prehistoric House Pit In Northwest Alaska, Scott Shirar

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

In this report, I examine a house from a Late Prehistoric village site near the confluence of Maiyumerak Creek and the Noatak River in the Noatak National Preserve, Alaska. In 2006, several thousand artifacts and over 100,000 faunal remains were excavated from this approximately 500-year-old house. Faunal remains and subsistencerelated artifacts associated with the living fl oor of the house were analyzed to assess diet and seasonal occupation. I also address how this house fits into previously proposed Late Prehistoric land- and resource-use models. The dietary reconstruction shows that both classes of data (artifacts and fauna) indicate a primary reliance …

The oxidation capacity of the highly polluted urban area of Santiago, Chile has been evaluated during a summer measurement campaign carried out from 8-20 March 2005. The hydroxyl (OH) radical budget was evaluated employing a simple quasi-photostationary-state model (PSS) constrained with simultaneous measurements of HONO, HCHO, O-3, NO, NO2, j((OD)-D-1), j(NO2), 13 alkenes and meteorological parameters. In addition, a zero dimensional photochemical box model based on the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCMv3.1) has been used to estimate production rates and total free radical budgets, including OH, HO2 and RO2. Besides the above parameters, the MCM model has been constrained by the …

Ecomorphology Of The Mexican Fence Lizards Of The Sceloporus Formosus Group (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae), Gloria Andrea Acevedo Jan 2009

Ecomorphology Of The Mexican Fence Lizards Of The Sceloporus Formosus Group (Squamata: Phrynosomatidae), Gloria Andrea Acevedo

Biology Theses - Archive

A central belief of ecomorphological studies is the link between morphology and performance, but, surprisingly few analyses demonstrate this relationship. Fence lizards of the genus Sceloporus offer a useful system for addressing correlations between morphology and performance because they possess keratinized and keeled scales, a distinctive morphological character that might influence water balance. A common observation across different taxa of reptiles is that many organisms in dry habitats have few scales on their bodies, compared to organisms inhabiting moist environments. This pattern is also present in fence lizards. I investigated if the number of dorsal and lateral scales varies across …

Analysis Of Novel Regulatory Region And Function Of A Young Drosophila Retrogene: Dntf-2r, Mansi Motiwale Kunte

Biology Dissertations - Archive

Dntf-2r is a young retroposed gene that originated from the nuclear transport gene Dntf-2. Here the function, quality and evolutionary origin of the regulation of this retrogene are explored. In Chapter 1, I introduce the background of what is known of Dntf-2r as well as the function of its parental gene. This includes their evolutionary histories, and known functional and regulatory aspects. Chapter 2 describes my work on the novel regulatory region recruited by the retrogene and I explore the tissue specific expression pattern (i.e. testis expression) driven by this region. In Chapter 3 I set myself up to review …
