Stat5 Regulation Of Bcl10 Parallels Constitutive Nfkappab Activation In Lymphoid Tumor Cells., Zsuzsanna S Nagy, Matthew J Lebaron, Jeremy A Ross, Abhisek Mitra, Hallgeir Rui, Robert A Kirken

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 5 A and B (STAT5) are key survival factors in cells of the lymphoid lineage. Identification of novel, tissue-specific STAT5 regulated genes would advance the ability to combat diseases due to aberrant STAT5 signaling. In the present work a library of human STAT5 bound genomic elements was created and validated. RESULTS: Of several STAT5 responsive genomic regulatory elements identified, one was located within the first intron of the human BCL10 gene. Chromatin immuno-precipitation reactions confirmed constitutive in vivo STAT5 binding to this intronic fragment in various human lymphoid tumor cell lines. Interestingly, non-phosphorylated …

Barton Springs Salamanders, Spring Discharge And Dissolved Oxygen An Update To Dr-07-07 Bss&Abs Salamander Data Report 2006 And Sr-04-06 Some Water Quality Threats To The Bbs At Low Flows, Martha Turner

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

An evaluation of salamander counts, spring flowrates, and dissolved oxygen concentrations was completed to update previously collected data. Originally, this evaluation was used to recommend a pumping limit for sustainable yield to the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer Conservation District. The primary purpose of the current evaluation was to verify correlations between flow, dissolved oxygen, and surface count data of the endangered Barton Springs Salamander. Significant correlations provide the statistical basis for setting thresholds for Barton Springs flows related to a water quality parameter commonly used in aquatic life support. The pattern previously observed in Barton Springs Pool, with salamander counts …

The Effects Of Technology On Literacy(S), Thomas Glen Petersen Jan 2009

The Effects Of Technology On Literacy(S), Thomas Glen Petersen

Masters Theses

"One of the challenges when measuring the effects of technology on literacy(s) is finding a control group where technology; does not play a major role in the culture. The Amish successfully live in a Technocracy where mechanical/electronic tools are used only when absolutely necessary; the Amish are not dependent on them for survival. The crux of the Amish philosophy is humility, serving the community and serving God. Ironically, they have suffered tremendous repercussions for adopting a wholesome, selfless lifestyle which is contrary to most popular world views, regardless of religious or spiritual views"--Purpose, page 40.

In 2000, the National Science Foundation, in union with Croatian and Slovenian science ministries, provided initial support for the international collaboration that has become Meduza project. The program was started with the goal of international collaboration. Our initial objective was simple - use this international collaboration to develop exiting scientific research involving medusae in Southern Adriatic waters. This international collaborationa has been of great importance personally and professionally to all of the investigators and institutions involved in the project, but we now ask what objective difference has the project made scientifically. We approach this question by comparing what we might …

Violence Against Women Raises Risk Of Cervical Cancer, Ann L. Coker, Claudia Hopenhayn, Christopher P. Desimone, Heather M. Bush, Leslie Crofford Jan 2009

Violence Against Women Raises Risk Of Cervical Cancer, Ann L. Coker, Claudia Hopenhayn, Christopher P. Desimone, Heather M. Bush, Leslie Crofford

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Background: An emerging literature suggests that violence against women (VAW), particularly sexual violence, may increase the risk of acquiring a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and, therefore, may be associated with cervical cancer development. The purpose of this cross-sectional analysis was to determine if women who had experienced violence had higher prevalence rates of invasive cervical cancer.

Methods: Women aged 18–88 who joined the Kentucky Women’s Health Registry (2006–2007) and completed a questionnaire were included in the sample. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to adjust odds ratio (OR) for confounders (e.g., age, education, current marital status, lifetime illegal drug use, …

Are Morphological Specializations Of The Hyolingual System In Chameleons And Salamanders Tuned To Demands On Performance?, Anthony Herrel, Stephen M. Deban, Vicky Schaerlaeken, Jean-Pierre Timmermans, D. Adriaens

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Extremely specialized and long tongues used for prey capture have evolved independently in plethodontid salamanders and chameleons. In both systems, the demands on tongue projection are probably similar: to maximize projection velocity and distance. Consequently, many of the design features of the projection system in these two groups have converged to an astonishing degree. Both involve the use of power amplification systems based on helically wound muscle fibers that load internal connective tissue sheets as illustrated in previous studies. Demands imposed on tongue retraction, however, are different to some degree. Although in both groups there is a clear demand for …

The Round-Eared Sengi And The Evolution Of Social Monogamy: Factors That Constrain Males To Live With A Single Female, M. Schubert, N. Pillay, David O. Ribble, C. Schradin Jan 2009

The Round-Eared Sengi And The Evolution Of Social Monogamy: Factors That Constrain Males To Live With A Single Female, M. Schubert, N. Pillay, David O. Ribble, C. Schradin

Biology Faculty Research

Animal dispersion in space and time results from environmental pressures, and affects the outcome of a species’ social organization. When females are solitary, males may either roam or be pair-living. We studied possible environmental influences affecting the social organization of the round-eared sengi (Macroscelides proboscideus) in a semi-desert in South Africa, using trapping and radio-tracking across 2.5 yr. Adult sex ratios did not deviate from 1:1 and we found no indication of sexual dimorphism in body mass. Females maintained exclusive areas, which had little overlap (

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Two experiments were conducted to analyze the effects of wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) finishing diets on the fatty acid profile of beef. Ribeye slices (m. Longissimus thoracis), tenderloins (m. Psoas major), and top blades (m. Infraspinatus) were analyzed. Calf-fed (Experiment 1) and yearling steers (Experiment 2) (n = 96 each) were allocated into three treatments of 0%, 15% or 30% WDGS (DM basis) for each experiment. For all muscles, polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels were higher in beef from animals fed 30% WDGS. Except in tenderloins in Experiment 1, trans fatty acids increased linearly with …

Wet Distillers Grains Plus Solubles Or Solubles In Feedlot Diets Containing Wet Corn Gluten Feed, Virgil R. Bremer, Joshua R. Benton, Matt K. Luebbe, Kathryn J. Hanford, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Rick Stock

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Effects of the addition of 0% to 40% wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS) or 0% to 20% condensed corn distillers solubles (CCDS) to feedlot diets containing high moisture corn (HMC) and 35% wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) were evaluated. As WDGS replaced HMC, average daily gain (ADG) decreased linearly and dry matter intake (DMI) tended to decrease. Replacement of HMC with WDGS in the 35% WCGF diet caused a linear decrease in ADG and a trend for a linear decrease in DMI. When CCDS replaced HMC, no difference in steer performance was observed. The sulfur content, rather than fat …

Feeding Distillers Grains And E. Coli O157:H7, Terry J. Klopfenstein, David R. Smith, Galen E. Erickson, Rodney A. Moxley

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The diet of feedlot cattle may affect the bacterial population in the hindgut, includingE. coli O157:H7. Some research studies have shown a relationship between feeding of distillers grains and E. coli O157:H7 shedding. However, other studies do not show the same relationship. Our evaluation of research indicates feeding distillers grains is not related to 2007 ground beef recalls. Furthermore, interventions such as vaccination are more important than identifying various feedstuffs that may influence shedding.

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, he or she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed …

Emotion Knowledge And Relational Aggression In Preschoolers, Karen Morine Jan 2009

Emotion Knowledge And Relational Aggression In Preschoolers, Karen Morine

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The preschool years are an important time in a child's emotional development. Children learn how to navigate peer relationships and understand the source of others' emotions, one of the most important tasks of this developmental period. Deficits in emotion knowledge have been linked with increased aggressive behaviors and poor peer acceptance. This study's main objective was to clarify whether emotion knowledge is related to relational aggression in young children. In addition, the role of age, sex, siblings, depressed affect, and peer acceptance and rejection was examined in the context of relational aggression. Sixty-six preschool children from ages 3 to 4 …

The Effect Of Participating In School-Wide Positive Behavior Support On Academic Performance And Number Of Office Discipline Referrals, Nadine Sanders Jan 2009

The Effect Of Participating In School-Wide Positive Behavior Support On Academic Performance And Number Of Office Discipline Referrals, Nadine Sanders

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Schools continue to face the challenge of how to implement a behavior management plan in which students are not likely to become repeat offenders. Traditional management models that are restrictive and punitive have not been effective in bringing about appropriate student conduct. A non-traditional management strategy to improve student behavior is to develop and implement a comprehensive, school-wide set of strategies to support positive behavior and academic performance for all students that is individually tailored to a school's context. School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) occur as part of a three-tiered system. The universal level addresses supports planned and designed for …
