Natural Hybridization And Speciation In Toads Of The Anaxyrus Americanus Group., Brian E. Fontenot Jan 2009

Natural Hybridization And Speciation In Toads Of The Anaxyrus Americanus Group., Brian E. Fontenot

Biology Dissertations - Archive

The goal of speciation research is to elucidate the processes that lead to the formation of new species. Examining natural hybridization and the evolution of reproductive isolating barriers provides an opportunity to understand the dynamic processes that occur before, during, and after speciation events. Here, I use true toads of the Anaxyrus americanus group to examine the effects of natural hybridization on (1) the evolution of reproductive isolation using previously published laboratory hybridization data on multiple species within the family Bufonidae, (2) morphological variation using morphometric analysis of known Anaxyrus americanus group hybrids, and (3) molecular variation and genetic population …

Evolutionary Morphology Of The Speckled Rattlesnakes (Viperidae: Crotalus Mitchellii Group), Jesse Malcolm Meik Jan 2009

Evolutionary Morphology Of The Speckled Rattlesnakes (Viperidae: Crotalus Mitchellii Group), Jesse Malcolm Meik

Biology Dissertations - Archive

I examined various facets of morphological variation and evolution in the speckled rattlesnake (Crotalus mitchellii) species group. I performed three separate, but related, studies pertaining to the following topics: body size of putative ancestral source species and patterns of snake occupancy on islands in the Baja California region, the evolution and prevalence of gigantism and dwarfism among insular populations of speckled rattlesnakes, and the climatic correlates of scalation patterns in speckled rattlesnakes.I examined the influence of body size of mainland source species on insular distribution patterns by using a species index that weights isolation of islands while simultaneously penalizing island …

Morphology And Habitat Use Among Insular Populations Of The Lizard Anolis Lemurinus From The Cayos Cochinos Archipelago Of Honduras, Michael Latter Logan Jan 2009

Morphology And Habitat Use Among Insular Populations Of The Lizard Anolis Lemurinus From The Cayos Cochinos Archipelago Of Honduras, Michael Latter Logan

Biology Theses - Archive

In Honduras, Anolis lemurinus is distributed along the Atlantic versant of the mainland and on the Caribbean island system consisting of the Bay Islands and Cayos Cochinos archipelagos. In the Cayos Cochinos, A. lemurinus occurs on the two largest islands, Cayo Mayor and Cayo Menor, which are separated by less than 1km. A previous study using genetic (amplified fragment-length polymorphisms) and morphometric (mass and SVL) data suggested that populations of A. lemurinus in the Cayos Cochinos did not differ from each other (Klutsch et al. 2007). Despite the extremely close proximity of Cayo Mayor and Cayo Menor populations, I hypothesized …

How Soil Nutrient Availability Affects Plant Sexual Reproduction And Seedling Recruitment In Alaskan Dry Heath Tundra: Implications For Response To Climate Change, Carol Moulton Jan 2009

How Soil Nutrient Availability Affects Plant Sexual Reproduction And Seedling Recruitment In Alaskan Dry Heath Tundra: Implications For Response To Climate Change, Carol Moulton

Biology Theses - Archive

The harsh growing conditions of the arctic biome, in particular low temperatures and soil nutrient availability, restrict the growth and reproduction of arctic plant species. Recent and ongoing changes in climate are increasing air and soil temperatures in these ecosystems, thus affecting decomposition rates of arctic soils. As decomposition increases, nutrients that are currently immobilized in the soil organic layer become available to nutrient-limited tundra plants. Plant species within the tundra communities then compete for the newly available nutrients, potentially causing a shift in community composition. As an important component of plant life cycles, seeds provide new individuals and genetic …

Measuring Parent Involvement In Relation To Student Achievement, Tony O'Neal Brooks Jan 2009

Measuring Parent Involvement In Relation To Student Achievement, Tony O'Neal Brooks

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of parent involvement in relation to the influence on student achievement within a school community. In addition, this study worked towards gaining an understanding of the parent’s role in the school community. Researching educational data may suggest that more parent involvement will have a greater impact on student achievement, rather than little to no parent involvement, relating to student achievement.

Two sets of data were analyzed. One set came from information gathered in a parent questionnaire which was calculated to produce a parent rating score. The second set of data …

Marketing Mothers' Milk: The Commodification Of Breastfeeding And The New Markets For Breast Milk And Infant Formula, Linda C. Fentiman Jan 2009

Marketing Mothers' Milk: The Commodification Of Breastfeeding And The New Markets For Breast Milk And Infant Formula, Linda C. Fentiman

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This paper explores the commodification of women and biological processes, the confusion of scientific evidence with social agendas, and the conflict between marketing and public health. I assert that key actors in the healthcare marketplace - government, businesses, and doctors – have acted to enable weak medical and scientific evidence to be manipulated by ideological and profit-making partisans in a poorly regulated market. I focus on the unique role of the medical profession, which has acted with government and the private sector to shape the markets in human milk and infant formula. In a striking parallel to the pharmaceutical industry, …

Two Narratives Of Torture, John Ip Jan 2009

Two Narratives Of Torture, John Ip

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

This article is about the normalization of interrogational torture and coercion from 2001 to 2008. The discussion focuses on two different narratives or accounts of torture. Each narrative signifies a certain view about the legality and wisdom of employing torture and coercion in interrogation. The first narrative centers on the key device of the normalization process: the ticking bomb scenario. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, legal academics have invoked the ticking bomb scenario in questioning the status of the absolute legal prohibition on torture. Versions of the ticking bomb scenario have also appeared in Bush administration documents and official statements …

Closing The Impunity Gap In U.S. Law, David Scheffer Jan 2009

Closing The Impunity Gap In U.S. Law, David Scheffer

Northwestern Journal of Human Rights

This piece is composed of written testimony submitted to the Subcommittee on Human Rights and the Law, Committee on the Judiciary, U.S. Senate, on October 6, 2009, for a hearing entitled, "No Safe Haven: Accountability for Human Rights Violators, Part II." The testimony addresses the Crimes Against Humanity Act of 2009. This legislation would introduce into federal law a broader set of criminal offenses pertaining to both U.S. citizens and aliens who visit or reside in the United States. The testimony focuses exclusively on criminal law and military law and how to ensure that U.S. law sufficiently empowers U.S. courts …

Social Problems In Major League Baseball: Revisiting And Expanding Talamini’S Analysis Twenty Years Later, Mark Vermillion, G. Clayton Stoldt, Jordan Bass Jan 2009

Social Problems In Major League Baseball: Revisiting And Expanding Talamini’S Analysis Twenty Years Later, Mark Vermillion, G. Clayton Stoldt, Jordan Bass

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The purpose of this research was to review, revisit, and expand Talamini’s social problems within Major League Baseball (MLB). Talamini’s categories, which include gambling, player/managerial violence, spectator violence, cheating, crime, and greed are reviewed and applied to social problems in MLB since the original publication in 1987. In order to better understand social problems and deviant behavior within MLB, the original categories are related to specific deviance theories to better understand causation of deviance. Theories are then organized by Shoemaker’s proposed integrated model, which organizes causes of deviance on the structural, social-psychological, and psychological levels. Relating Talamini’s social problems categories …

Healthy Planet, Healthy People: Integrating Global Health Into The International Response To Climate Change, Lindsay Wiley Jan 2009

Healthy Planet, Healthy People: Integrating Global Health Into The International Response To Climate Change, Lindsay Wiley

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The potentially groundbreaking negotiations currently underway on the international response to climate change and national implementation of commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) include a number of hotly contested issues: (1) what degree of climate change is acceptable as a basis for emissions targets, (2) to what extent and in what ways climate change mitigation should incorporate emissions reductions or increased sinks for developing countries, (3) whether the legal regime governing mitigation can take advantage of the huge mitigation potential of changed practices in the land use and agricultural sectors, (4) how adaptation should be …

An Economic Justification For Open Access To Essential Medicine Patents In Developing Countries, Sean Flynn, Aidan Hollis, Mike Palmedo Jan 2009

An Economic Justification For Open Access To Essential Medicine Patents In Developing Countries, Sean Flynn, Aidan Hollis, Mike Palmedo

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This paper offers an economic rationale for compulsory licensing of needed medicines in developing countries. The patent system is based on a trade-off between the “deadweight losses” caused by market power and the incentive to innovate created by increased profits from monopoly pricing during the period of the patent. However, markets for essential medicines under patent in developing countries with high income inequality are characterized by highly convex demand curves, producing large deadweight losses relative to potential profits when monopoly firms exercise profit-maximizing pricing strategies. As a result, these markets are systematically ill-suited to exclusive marketing rights, a problem which …

Multiple Families, Multiple Goals, Multiple Failures: The Need For “Limited Equalization” As A Theory Of Child Support, Adrienne Jennings Lockie

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Current child support laws are based on flawed assumptions about families that fail to reflect family complexity and the realities of parenting. Further, there has been little reevaluation of the stated goals of child support law since they were first implemented thirty years ago. The stated goals — fiscal savings, children’s economic well-being, and parental involvement — have not been achieved and are increasingly unlikely to be achieved because they ignore the way that children in multiple families — families in which at least one parent has had another child with a different partner —compete for the limited resources of …

Offspring And Bodies: Dependency And Vulnerability In The Constitutional Jurisprudence Of Reproductive Rights, Ann Shalleck Jan 2009

Offspring And Bodies: Dependency And Vulnerability In The Constitutional Jurisprudence Of Reproductive Rights, Ann Shalleck

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

In this article, the author responds to Sherry Colb’s argument in "To Whom Do We Refer When We Speak of Obligations to “Future Generations”? Reproductive Rights and the Intergenerational Community," (77 GEO. WASH. L. REV. 1582 (2009)). Colb offered a new way to consider reproductive rights by delineating two distinct and not always overlapping interests at stake in giving meaning to and shaping the contours of the rights implicated in reproductive decisions. Through differentiating interests in bodily integrity and offspring selection, Colb disentangled underlying justifications for legal advocacy and judicial decisions and offered an interpretive frame through which to consider …

The Right Remedy For The Wrongly Convicted: Judicial Sanctions For Destruction Of Dna Evidence, Cynthia E. Jones Jan 2009

The Right Remedy For The Wrongly Convicted: Judicial Sanctions For Destruction Of Dna Evidence, Cynthia E. Jones

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Many state innocence protection statutes give courts the power to impose appropriate sanctions when biological evidence needed for postconviction DNA testing is wrongly destroyed by the government. Constitutional claims based on wrongful evidence destruction are governed by the virtually insurmountable "bad faith" standard articulated in Arizona v. Youngblood. The wrongful destruction of DNA evidence in contravention of state innocence protection laws, however, should be governed by the standards used to adjudicate other "access to evidence" violations in criminal cases, including disclosures mandated by the rules of criminal procedure, the Jencks Act, and Brady v. Maryland. Under the "access to evidence" …

Design Of Sea Water Heat Exchanger For Miniature Vapor Compression Cycle, James Hughes Jan 2009

Design Of Sea Water Heat Exchanger For Miniature Vapor Compression Cycle, James Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in the development of miniature vapor compression cycle components have created unique opportunities for heating and cooling applications, specifically to human physiological requirements that arise in extreme environments. Diving in very cold water between 1.7 and 5°C requires active heating because passive thermal insulation has proven inadequate for long durations. To maintain diver mobility and cognitive performance, it is desirable to provide 250 to 300 W of heat from an untethered power source. The use of a miniature vapor compression cycle reduces the amount of power (batteries or fuel cell) that the diver must carry by 2.5 times …

The Tadpole Of Hypsiboas Atlanticus (Anura, Hylidae) From Northeastern Brazil, Filipe A. C. Do Nascimento, Marcelo G. De Lima, Gabriel O. Skuk, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

The tadpole of Hypsiboas atlanticus (Caramaschi & Velosa, 1996) is described from the municipality of Maceió, State of Alagoas, Brazil. At stage 36 the larvae have an overall elliptical body in lateral and dorsal views, oral disc anteroventral, spiracular tube sinistral, and labial tooth row formula 2(1,2)/3(1). The oral disc is surrounded, almost completely (anterior medial gap present) by a single row of marginal papillae. Described tadpoles of the H. punctatus species group can be differentiated by a combined disc oral features. Additional descriptions of H. punctatus (Schneider, 1799) tadpoles from populations throughout South America may be helpful in determining …

Bibliography Of The Frogs Of The Leptodactylus Clade - Adenomera, Hydrolaetare, Leptodactylus, Lithodytes (Ampbibia, Anura, Leptodactylidae). Volume 1. References, Miriam H. Heyer, W. Ronald Heyer, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

In the funded proposal to NSF, RdS and WRH included a project to create an electronic database for all publications containing mention of species names for Adenomera, Leptodactylus, and Vanzolinius (Vanzolinius has since been synonymized with Leptodactylus). At the beginning of the project, there were about 2,000 references on 3x5 cards. Miriam H. Heyer (MHH) was contracted to create the EndNote® file. MHH entered all citations into EndNote® and examined the literature citations in those publications to determine whether any of them contained information on the genera of interest. WRH anticipated that the intensive bibliography would yield a total …

Root Responses Along A Subambient To Elevated Co2 Gradient In A C3–C4 Grassland, Laurel J. Anderson, Justin D. Derners, H. Wayne Polley, Wendy S. Gordon, David M. Eissenstat, Robert B. Jackson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Atmospheric CO2 (Ca) concentration has increased significantly during the last 20 000 years, and is projected to double this century. Despite the importance of belowground processes in the global carbon cycle, community-level and single species root responses to rising Ca are not well understood. We measured net community root biomass over 3 years using ingrowth cores in a natural C3–C4 grassland exposed to a gradient of Ca from preglacial to future levels (230–550 µmol mol-1).
