Phosphopeptide pTyr-Glu-Glu-Ile (pYEEI) has been introduced as an optimal Src SH2 domain ligand. Peptides, Ac-K(IDA)pYEEIEK(IDA) (1), Ac-KpYEEIEK (2), Ac-K(IDA)pYEEIEK (3), and Ac-KpYEEIEK(IDA) (4), containing 0–2 iminodiacetate (IDA) groups at the N- and C-terminal lysine residues were synthesized and evaluated as the Src SH2 domain binding ligands. Fluorescence polarization assays showed that peptide 1 had a higher binding affinity (Kd = 0.6 μM) to the Src SH2 domain when compared with Ac-pYEEI (Kd = 1.7 μM), an optimal Src SH2 domain ligand, and peptides 2–4 …

Chloromethyl polystyrene resin was reacted with 5-hydroxysalicylaldehyde in the presence of potassium carbonate to afford polymer-bound 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. Subsequent reduction with borane solution produced polymer-bound 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol. The reaction of immobilized 2-hydroxybenzyl alcohol with appropriate phosphitylating reagents yielded solid-phase cycloSaligenyl mono-, di-, and triphosphitylating reagents, which were reacted with unprotected nucleosides, followed by iodine oxidation, deprotection of cyanoethoxy groups, and the basic cleavage, respectively, to afford 5′-O-nucleoside mono-, di-, and triphosphoramidates in 52−73% overall yield.

Factors Affecting Predation Of Marine Turtle Eggs By Raccoons And Ghost Crabs On Canaveral National Seashore, Fl, Justin Brown Jan 2009

Factors Affecting Predation Of Marine Turtle Eggs By Raccoons And Ghost Crabs On Canaveral National Seashore, Fl, Justin Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Changes in abundance of interactive species can have cascading, community-wide effects (Soule et al. 2003). Raccoons (Procyon lotor) prey on a competitor for marine turtle eggs, the Atlantic ghost crab (Ocypode quadrata). Conservation of marine turtles often includes managing raccoons-the most obvious egg predator-which may have broader ecological effects, and unknown effects on egg predation. Neither the relationship between raccoons and ghost crab density nor the effects of ghost crab density on egg predation are well understood. I studied raccoon-ghost crab interactions and the effects of environmental variation on their activity during the 2007 marine turtle nesting season on Canaveral …

Homeland Security: Fostering Public-Private Partnerships, George Baker, Cheryl Elliot

Selected Works

Recent U.S. high consequence events have clarified the importance of government collaboration with industry. The benefit of such collaboration was one of the most important lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. The resources owned and controlled by American industry dwarf those available to local, state and even the federal government departments. Better agreements and incentives to bring the full capabilities of industry squarely into the national response agenda will be indispensable in effectively responding to large-scale catastrophes. At our 2007 Symposium, General Russel Honoré, who led the National Guard response to Katrina stated, “We need the partnering between local, state, and …

Leveraging Higher Salaries For Nursing Faculty, Carolyn B. Yucha, Rosemary Witt

Nursing Faculty Research

The nursing faculty pay scale at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has increased significantly over the past 5 years. This increase was driven by a number of factors: (a) the rapidly expanding population in Nevada, (b) the nursing shortage and the Nevada legislative mandate to double nursing enrollment in state schools, (c) the national nursing faculty shortage, and (d) the opening of private nursing schools in Nevada. This article describes how, given these factors, the faculty members were able to leverage a pay scale that is finally competitive with clinical appointments.

The Effects Of Alewife On The Zooplankton Community In Townhouse Pond, Sarah Toupin Jan 2009

The Effects Of Alewife On The Zooplankton Community In Townhouse Pond, Sarah Toupin

Center for Freshwater Biology

The purpose of this study was to determine what plankton species was more dominant in Townhouse Pond and what effects predation has on the food web. Plankton size is important when determining pelagic food web structure. Plankton size along with predation determines whether the lake is dominated by top-down or bottom-up control. Plankton size and biomass, grazing rates, light intensity, and chemistry parameters were all determined for Townhouse Pond in October 2008. We concluded that Townhouse Pond is a mesotrophic lake and is mainly dominated by phytoplankton, such as Microystis and Dinobryon. Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), planktivorous fish, are dominant in …

Giuh Based Transfer Function For Gomti River Basin Of India Jan 2009

Giuh Based Transfer Function For Gomti River Basin Of India

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph (GIUH) can be used as a transfer function for modeling the transformation of excess rainfall into surface runoff, in which excess rainfall is an excitation (i.e. production function) to the hydrologic system. These models can be used to predict / forecast the temporal variation of the surface runoff at the outlet of ungauged basin, which is useful in the hydrologic / environmental engineering applications. The present study deals with the geomorphometric investigation and provides an efficient solution approach to derive the GIUH based transfer function and thus geomorphologic unit hydrograph (GUH) for the basin. Since, Gomti …

Probenazole (3-allyloxy-1,2-benzothiazole 1,1-dioxide, PBZ) is a bactericide and fungicide that acts by inducing plant defense systems. It has been shown to induce the expression of NBS-LRR genes like RPR1 (rice probenazole-response gene) in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and systemic acquired resistance (SAR)-like disease resistance. Two maize (Zea mays L.) genes Zmnbslrr1 (a NBS-LRR gene, cloned from a disease resistance analog PIC11 based) and Zmgc1 , (a putative guanylyl cyclase-like gene) have both been associated with quantitative resistance loci (QTL) for resistance to Fusarium graminearum . PIC11 was associated with Fusarium stalk rot and ZmGC1 showed resistance to Gibberella ear rot …

Articles

OsARF1 is the first full-length member of auxin response factor (ARF) gene family to be cloned from monocot plant. Using quantitative RT-PCR this study found that, the transcript abundance of OsARF1 was significantly higher in embryonic tissues than in vegetative tissues. To investigate the effect of OsARF1 on the phenotype of rice, a cDNA fragment of OsARF1 was inserted in inverse orientation to the 35S promoter in vector pBin438 to produce an antisense (AS) construction. The AS-OsARF1 construct was transferred into rice (Oryza sativa L. japonica ) calli via Agrobacterium tumefaciens -mediated transformation. Molecular analysis of transgenic plants showed that …

Analysis Of Sediment And Gut Contents Of The Sand Dollars Mellita Tenuis, Encope Michelini, And Encope Aberrans Off The Central Florida Gulf Coast, Susan E. Hilber, John M. Lawrence

Gulf of Mexico Science

Sand dollars are conspicuous macroinvertebrates on particulate substrates in intertidal and shallow water environments. Their locomotion and feeding can have major effects on the sediment and infauna. We investigated the sediment and gut contents of three species of sand dollars off the central Florida gulf coast. Sediment comprised quartz particles at two sites and mixed quartz particles and carbonate shell hash at the third site. At all sites, gut particles were smaller than those of the sediment. This could have been the result of the teeth of the Aristotle’s lantern crushing the particles. However, particles in the food grooves of …

What Goes Around, Comes Around: How Indian Tribes Can Profit In The Aftermath Of Seminole Tribe And Florida Prepaid, Jeremiah A. Bryar Jan 2009

What Goes Around, Comes Around: How Indian Tribes Can Profit In The Aftermath Of Seminole Tribe And Florida Prepaid, Jeremiah A. Bryar

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

Of the approximate 1.5 million American Indians living in the United States only 403,714 were employed in 2001 and nearly one-third of them lived below the poverty line. This article explains that one possible solution to American Indian poverty is the creation of sovereign chartered research groups that would be shielded by tribal sovereign immunity. In patent law there are exceptions to a patent owner's ability to bring a successful suit against patent infringers. One of these exceptions is when a sovereign, such as an American Indian tribe, infringes on a patent owner's patent. Tribal sovereign immunity means that American …

Brandenburg In A Time Of Terror, Thomas Healy Jan 2009

Brandenburg In A Time Of Terror, Thomas Healy

Notre Dame Law Review

For four decades, the Supreme Court's decision in Brandenburg v. Ohio has been celebrated as a landmark in First Amendment law. In one short unsigned opinion, the Court distanced itself from the embarrassment of the Red Scare and adopted a highly protective test that permits advocacy of unlawful conduct in all but the most dangerous cases. But 9/11 and the threat of terrorism pose a new challenge to Brandenburg. Although the government has not resorted to the excesses of McCarthyism, it has taken disturbing steps to silence the speech of political dissenters. These efforts raise questions about the adequacy of …
