A Computational Model Of Breast Ducts, Jordan Greenlee Jan 2009

A Computational Model Of Breast Ducts, Jordan Greenlee

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Ductal Carcinoma represents almost 75% of breast cancer. In this specific type of cancer. malignant cells in the breast ducts invade the surrounding healthy tissue. Almost all researchers who are investigating microwave modality in the area of breast cancer detection employ oversimplified models of the internal structure of the breast. Use of engineered or biologically inaccurate models can render inaccurate results. Therefore. a mathematical biological model was implemented in this work aiming to bridge the gap between physiologists and engineers. The result show that the proposed breast duct model has the capability of modeling the breast ducts of different kinds …

Evolutionary Time For Dispersal Limits The Extent But Not The Occupancy Of Species’ Potential Ranges In The Tropical Plant Genus Psychotria (Rubiaceae), John R. Paul, Cynthia Morton, Charlotte M. Taylor, Stephen J. Tonsor Jan 2009

Tonsor

Explaining the diversity in geographic range sizes among species is a central goal of ecological and evolutionary studies. We tested species age as an explanation of range size variation within a group of understory shrubs in the Neotropics (Psychotria subgenus Psychotria, Rubiaceae). We distinguish between range occupancy (filling an occupied area) and range extent (maximum distances dispersed). We used Bayesian relaxed-clock dating of molecular sequence data to estimate the relative age of species, and we used species distribution modeling to predict species' potential ranges. If the range sizes of species are limited by time for dispersal, we hypothesize that older …

Pioneering The Personal Robotics Industry, Russell Nickerson Jan 2009

Pioneering The Personal Robotics Industry, Russell Nickerson

Undergraduate Review

The up and coming industry that I will be reporting about here is the personal and home robotics industry. I will show how the development cycle in the United States functions. I will then answer the question: What are the main limits that hold back this industry? The U.S. approach to robotics will be contrasted with Japan’s approach as Japan has another very well developed robotics program.

An Emerging Integration Of Universal And Culturally Specific Psychologies And Its Implications For The Study Of Psychopathology, Gregory T. Smith, Nichea S. Spillane, Agnes M. Stairs Jan 2009

An Emerging Integration Of Universal And Culturally Specific Psychologies And Its Implications For The Study Of Psychopathology, Gregory T. Smith, Nichea S. Spillane, Agnes M. Stairs

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

There is an emerging consensus among researchers on the need to integrate universal and culturally specific psychological perspectives. Important tasks in this process have included identifying the appropriate level of generality for putatively universal processes, how to understand culturally different processes in light of shared universal capacities, and the development of transparent scientific means for investigating cultural differences. In this chapter, the authors discuss each of these issues. It appears to be true that many psychological processes appear to reflect culturally-specific instantiations of universal capacities. The authors then consider implications of this emerging integration for psychology, by applying it to …

An Examination Of Acquiescent Response Styles In Cross-Cultural Research, Ronald Fischer, Johnny R. J. Fontaine, Fons J. R. Van De Vijver, Dianne A. Van Hemert

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Response styles constitute a formidable challenge for cross-cultural research. In this article, three different response styles are discussed (acquiescence, extremity scoring, and social desirability). Acquiescence responding (ARS) is then integrated into a larger classical test theoretical framework, which allows for an examination of the various roles that ARS may play in cross-cultural research. A new meta-analytical method is proposed to examine the prevalence and nature of ARS. Preliminary evidence suggests that ARS has only a small, but systematic effect on survey responses. The meaning of ARS is explored through correlations with nation-level indicators. Implications for future research are discussed.

Effects Of Reading Direction On Visuospatial Organization: A Critical Review, Sylvie Chokron, Seta Kazandjian, Maria De Agostini

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Over the past decades, a growing literature on perceptual bias has investigated the factors that determine normal performance in simple visuospatial tasks, such as line bisection and aesthetic preference. Normal right-handed participants may exhibit spatial asymmetries in these tasks with a tendency to bisect to the left of the objective middle in line bisection and a preference for images with the center of interest in their right half in aesthetic preference tasks. These patterns of performance have mostly been attributed to hemispheric imbalance. Other explanations have also been put forth to explain the spatial asymmetries seen in the normal population. …

Cultures Of Infancy. The Foundation Of Developmental Pathways, Heidi Keller Jan 2009

Cultures Of Infancy. The Foundation Of Developmental Pathways, Heidi Keller

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Development can be understood as a series of universal developmental tasks that pattern the human life span. These developmental tasks evolved during the history of humankind, mainly to solve recurring adaptive problems. They are functionally related to each other in the sense that the solution of earlier tasks influences the solution of later developmental tasks. Thus developmental and biographical continuity emerge. The resulting developmental pathways, however, are not conceived of as being absolutely determined by the earlier influences. Developmental pathways are informed by earlier as well as concurrent influences. Plasticity, yet not unlimited, characterizes developmental pathways as well as continuity.

Service Science,Management, Engineering, And Design (Ssmed): An Emerging Discipline -- Outline And References, J. Spohrer, Stephen K. Kwan

Faculty Publications, Information Systems & Technology

The growth of the global service economy has led to a dramatic increase in our daily interactions with highly specialized service systems. Service (or value-cocreation) interactions are both frequent and diverse, and may include retail, financial, healthcare, education, on-line, communications, technical support, entertainment, transportation, legal, professional, government, or many other types of specialized interactions. And yet surprisingly few students graduating from universities have studied anything about service or service systems. Service Science, Management, Engineering, and Design (SSMED), or service science for short, is an emerging discipline aimed at understanding service and innovating service systems. This article sketches an outline and …

Bringing Home The Trash: Do Differences In Foraging Lead To Increased Plastic Ingestion In Laysan Albatrosses?, L C. Young, C Vanderlip, D C. Duffy, V Afanasyev, Scott A. Shaffer

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

When searching for prey, animals should maximize energetic gain, while minimizing energy expenditure by altering their movements relative to prey availability. However, with increasing amounts of marine debris, what once may have been ‘optimal’ foraging strategies for top marine predators, are leading to sub-optimal diets comprised in large part of plastic. Indeed, the highly vagile Laysan albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis) which forages throughout the North Pacific, are well known for their tendency to ingest plastic. Here we examine whether Laysan albatrosses nesting on Kure Atoll and Oahu Island, 2,150 km apart, experience different levels of plastic ingestion. Twenty two geolocators were …

2009: Final Report "Is It Time To Change The Drinking Age In The United States?"

CACTUS--Citizens' Assembly for Critical Thinking About the United States

The 2009 Citizens' Assembly for Critical Thinking about the United States must study proposals for changing the current legal drinking age, identify and analyze the perceived problems leading to these proposals as well as arguments in support of the current legal drinking age, and decide if a change is warranted, at what level of government should it be implemented, and whether other provisions should be mandated as part of the change.

Patterns Of Occurrence From Spring Bird Counts At Oak Lake Field Station, Brookings County, South Dakota, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr., Jennifer D. Maag, Gary E. Larson

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

Over 400 bird species have been recorded from South Dakota. Many of these birds simply pass through to other habitats. Others take residence seasonally while a few species are permanent residents. Recent studies suggest that spring migrants may be arriving earlier than previously recorded and these shifting migration times may be reflected in annual spring bird counts. The objective of this effort was to summarize patterns in bird occurrence from spring bird counts held at the Oak Lake Field Station, Brookings County, South Dakota (mid-May from 1995 to 2008). Tallies of bird species seen along a regular route were made …

Aging And Endothelial Progenitor Cell Telomere Length In Healthy Men, Erich J Kushner, Gary P. Van Guilder, Owen J Maceneaney, Jennifer N Cech, Brian L Stauffer, Christopher A Desouza

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Telomere length declines with age in mature endothelial cells and is thought to contribute to endothelial dysfunction and atherogenesis. Bone marrow-derived circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are critical to vascular health as they contribute to both reendothelialization and neovascularization. We tested the hypothesis that EPC telomere length decreases with age in healthy adult humans.

METHODS: Peripheral blood samples were collected from 40 healthy, non-obese, sedentary men: 12 young (age 21-34 years), 12 middle-aged (43-55 years) and 16 older (57-68 years). Putative EPCs were isolated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells and telomere length was determined using genomic DNA preparation and …
