Home Care Workers: Keeping Granite Staters In Their Homes As They Age, Kristin Smith Sep 2009

Home Care Workers: Keeping Granite Staters In Their Homes As They Age, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

Using data from the New Hampshire Direct Care Workforce Survey, this brief shows that New Hampshire's demand for home-based care workers outpaces supply because its population is aging at a faster rate than the average. These workers play a critical role and face many challenges, including low pay, little or no paid time off, and lack of access to health insurance.

Rescuing Children And Punishing Poor Families: Housing Related Decisions, Corey Shdaimah Sep 2009

Rescuing Children And Punishing Poor Families: Housing Related Decisions, Corey Shdaimah

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Child welfare policy is not self implementing; an understanding of child welfare policy must therefore include the decision making practices by those whom Michael Lipsky (1980) has called "streetlevel bureaucrats." This article reports data from a qualitative study exploring perceptions of child welfare professionals about housing-related child welfare decisions. Interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 18 child welfare lawyers, judges, and masters level social workers from a large city in the mid-Atlantic U.S. All agreed that there is insufficient affordable adequate housing. They held conflicting views, however, on: 1) the standard for adequate housing in the absence of …

Family-Friendly Policies For Rural Working Mothers, Rebecca K. Glauber

Carsey Publications

For working parents, family friendly work policies like paid sick days, flexible time, or medical insurance can reduce work-family conflict and lead to less absenteeism and higher productivity. Working parents in rural America, however, have less access to these policies than their urban counterparts.

City And Community Innovations In Cdas: The Role Of Community-Based Organizations, Carl Rist, Liana Humphrey Sep 2009

City And Community Innovations In Cdas: The Role Of Community-Based Organizations, Carl Rist, Liana Humphrey

Center for Social Development Research

In the SEED Initiative, twelve community-based organizations (CBOs) across the United States and its territories were chosen to offer CDAs, establish best practices in delivering CDAs and demonstrate “proof of concept.” Since the inception of the SEED Initiative, a second wave of CDA programs has emerged at the local level. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these community and city-wide CDA innovations in the U.S. and to examine the role that CBOs play in these innovations. First, this paper explores the theory behind CBO engagement in asset-building and the roles CBOs typically play at the local level. Second, …

The Theoretical Foundations Of Wilderness Therapy, Sara Smithson Aug 2009

The Theoretical Foundations Of Wilderness Therapy, Sara Smithson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

While an ever-growing number of studies have demonstrated that wilderness therapy can be very effective in facilitating emotional and behavioral change in at risk adolescents (Russell, 2003; 2005), a lack of understanding persists both within and outside of the wilderness therapy community regarding why and how wilderness therapy works. This study addresses these important questions by exploring the theoretical foundations of wilderness therapy and their relationship to practice. Conceptualization of wilderness therapy practice, theory, and process is approached through consideration of existing definitions of the treatment model as well as the field's characteristics and demographics. An overview of ongoing program …

A Follow-Up Study Exploring The Transformative Effects Of Wilderness Therapy On Adolescents With Histories Of Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Programs, Albany, Oregon, George Carter Herrity

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This quantitative, quasi-experimental study examined 57 adolescents, ages 13 to 18, who attended the Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Program 21-day trek. The program is based in Albany, Oregon. The purpose of this study was to conduct a follow-up to Ganapol's (2008) study in order to further assess the treatment modality, wilderness therapy, through the lens of trauma. More specifically, this study focused on wilderness therapy's potential to act as a transformative experience for adolescents with histories of trauma. For use in this research, the phenomenological term, transformative experience, corresponds to a decrease in trauma symptomatology, an increase in psychological resilience, …

Engaging Fathers : Examining Social Service Agency Father-Friendliness And Its Relationships With Father Involvement, Cole Douglas Hooley Aug 2009

Engaging Fathers : Examining Social Service Agency Father-Friendliness And Its Relationships With Father Involvement, Cole Douglas Hooley

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Social scientists have become increasingly interested over the past 30 years in the role fathers play in child development. As a result, a large bank of research has been accumulated; however, one area in this literature which remains understudied is the relationships between agency father friendliness and father involvement. This paper is one attempt to understand the intricacies of the interchange point between fathers and agencies by using longitudinal data collected by the Supporting Father Involvement study, specifically examining the associations between father involvement and father friendliness, as well as the relationships among the various components of agency father friendliness …

School Based Mental Health Providers' Perceptions Of Their Training In Serving Lgbtqi Youth, Sarah Eley Aug 2009

School Based Mental Health Providers' Perceptions Of Their Training In Serving Lgbtqi Youth, Sarah Eley

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study examined school based mental health workers' pre and post-graduate training around working with LGBTQI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex) youth. This qualitative, exploratory study aimed to explore the gaps and barriers in existing training for those working with LGBTQI youth in schools and discuss the possible outcomes for creating change in historically heterosexist, homophobic, and transphobic learning environments where professionals are trained and where young people come learn. Twelve participants who have worked in high school settings were interviewed about their graduate training and their current work with meeting the needs of LGBTQI youth in schools. These …

Parental Divorce: A Protection From Later Delinquency For Maltreated Children, Christopher A. Mallett, Patricia A. Stoddard Dare Aug 2009

Parental Divorce: A Protection From Later Delinquency For Maltreated Children, Christopher A. Mallett, Patricia A. Stoddard Dare

Social Work Faculty Publications

Family structure and maltreatment (abuse and neglect) have been identified as predictors of youth delinquency, although the relationship is not clear. This article furthers this research by studying a sample of maltreated children (n = 250) in one Midwest county, and through a multiple regression analysis of many risk factors, the study identified only one significant delinquency variable that made delinquency less likely—children who experience parental divorce. Some established risk factors were surprisingly found not to be predictive of later delinquency: minority race, one-parent families, youth substance abuse, recurrent maltreatment, and youth behind in academic grade level. Implications for the …

Child Cognitive Development As Examined Using The Family Stress Model, Aimee Hanvey Aug 2009

Child Cognitive Development As Examined Using The Family Stress Model, Aimee Hanvey

All Theses

This study used the Family Stress Model to investigate the relationship between economic distress and child cognitive development. A number of family and community processes have been theorized to mediate the relationship between income and child cognitive functioning. Warm parenting, parental stress, and punitive parenting practices were examined as possible mediators in a sample of 12,440 kindergarten children from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study - Kindergarten (ECLS-K). Cognitive development was evaluated by reading and mathematical standardized tests, and economic distress was measured using the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Insecurity Scale. The results of this study found support …

Adult Sexual Adjustment After Experiencing Sexual Abuse In Childhood, Liliana G. Moyers-Ruiz Aug 2009

Adult Sexual Adjustment After Experiencing Sexual Abuse In Childhood, Liliana G. Moyers-Ruiz

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

A sample of 465 Junior and Senior college students was tested at the University of Texas-Pan American to test our primary hypothesis that argues that individual who had suffered CSA rely more on cybersex activities as a means of sexual gratification to cope with the long term effects of sexual abuse as a result of adulthood sexual maladjustment, as opposed to individual who did not suffered CSA. The statistical analyses performed failed to reject the null hypothesis of this thesis that the experience of CSA has no effect on adult use of internet cybersex. Further research is suggested using measures …

4-H—Going Beyond Life Skill Development, Alexa Lamm, Amy Harder Aug 2009

4-H—Going Beyond Life Skill Development, Alexa Lamm, Amy Harder

Journal of Extension

The investment of tax dollars means 4-H must distinguish itself from its youth-development peers. Such an argument can be developed by examining organizational research, the historical contributions and tradition of 4-H, and the contributions of the modern 4-H program. Although the context of 4-H has broadened beyond food production, it continues to contribute positively to the development of the U.S. economy. Extension's challenge is to prove 4-H's worth by demonstrating a clear return-on-investment to stakeholders. Doing so may be exactly what is required to justify the continuation of public funds.

Mapping Out Your Success: Using Mind Maps To Evaluate Youth Development Programs, Mary Sara Wells, Skye Arthur-Banning Jul 2009

Mapping Out Your Success: Using Mind Maps To Evaluate Youth Development Programs, Mary Sara Wells, Skye Arthur-Banning

Journal of Youth Development

A primary component of any youth program is documenting and promoting the results through evaluation. Frequently, however, administrators in youth development programs struggle to find meaningful ways of evaluating the impacts they have on the lives of youth. It is often difficult to capture the unique benefits these programs offer to participants, especially when traditional methods such as focus groups and interviews may be too time consuming and questionnaires may yield poor response rates. This article presents a creative form of evaluation targeted at demonstrating the success of programs in outcomes that are historically more difficult to measure. A “mind …
