Using Multicultural Literature Across Curriculum To Foster An Understanding And Acceptance Of Diversity, Nina Stubblebine Jun 2009

Using Multicultural Literature Across Curriculum To Foster An Understanding And Acceptance Of Diversity, Nina Stubblebine

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this teacher research was to (a) use multicultural literature across curriculum to foster an understanding and acceptance of diversity and (b) examine more deeply how using multicultural literature in this manner might impact student learning, teacher-student relationships, student-student relationships and the overall environment of an elementary school classroom. In response to a cross-curricular multicultural literature unit, the four first grade self-contained participants of this study demonstrated progression from a recognition of physical differences to an acceptance of diversity. My methods for data collection were: keeping a teacher journal, conducting teacher interviews, informal student interviews, read-alouds, audio recordings …

Stay Or Leave Coos County? Parents' Messages Matter, Corinna J. Tucker Jun 2009

Stay Or Leave Coos County? Parents' Messages Matter, Corinna J. Tucker

Carsey Publications

When it comes to deciding whether to stay in New Hampshire's rural Coos County or leave for other opportunities, young people are listening to their parents. Surveying 78 percent of all seventh and eleventh graders in public schools in Coos County, researchers found that young peoples' future intentions to migrate from Coos in search of economic or educational opportunities or to remain in Coos to pursue a future close to home are closely aligned with the messages their parents deliver to them.

Whetting Beginning Qualitative Researchers’ Appetites: A Review Of Green And Thorogood’S Qualitative Methods For Health Research, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

Selecting texts for introductory qualitative research courses can be a challenge given the depth, breadth, and variety of contemporary qualitative inquiry. The new edition of Green and Thorogood’s Qualitative Methods for Health Research presents a great choice for professors teaching courses across the health care spectrum due to its authors’ ability to give students a diverse buffet designed to whet appetites and increase hunger for more qualitative research nourishment.

Climate Protection In The People’S Republic Of China, Bartosz Rakoczy Jun 2009

Climate Protection In The People’S Republic Of China, Bartosz Rakoczy

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

Climate protection is one of the basic problems in the modern world. It is also a problem which should be solved in an all-world scale and not by each state separately. It does not mean, however, that individual states could not regulate issues concerning climate protection in their own legislation. Constitutional regulations play an important role in climate protection.

Climate protection in the constitution of the People’s Republic Of China is carried out on several plains. First, climate is protected as an environmental element to the use of which all citizens have the right. Public authorities ensure climate protection. Second, …

Public Initiatives And Local Practices In China’S Response To Climate Change, Lei Xie Jun 2009

Public Initiatives And Local Practices In China’S Response To Climate Change, Lei Xie

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

China is facing increasing environmental pressure, among which climate change is the most serious one. As many areas are still under development, the country’s vulnerability to the adverse impacts of climate change lies not only in its ecological aspect but also its social aspect. In particular, the country’s increasing energy demand has posed serious problem, as the country strongly relies on fossil-fuels. Dilemmas exist between development and increasing level of pollution. Local government, to realize its political credibility often permits environmental pollution happen and has been ineffective in local environmental governance.

Chinese environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGO), led by journalists, scientists …

Climate Change And Heatwaves : China’S Responsibility Before The Poor Elderly, José Azoh Barry Jun 2009

Climate Change And Heatwaves : China’S Responsibility Before The Poor Elderly, José Azoh Barry

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

OBJECTIVE: To address the extent of China’s obligation toward the elderly – a growing segment of the population -- as more vulnerable to heat waves.

METHOD: Data handled are secondary and derived from a non-exhaustive review of a specialized scientific literature. The search for relevant publications was conducted from a multidisciplinary perspective.

RESULTS: Of the various sources of human influences on climate, two major ones related to heat waves appear to be urban designs and greenhouse gas emissions. The urban heat islands effects as local anthropogenic impacts on climate increase the need for air conditioning and demand for power consumption …

Land Use And Climate Change : Effects And Solutions At The Local Level, Mark Henderson Jun 2009

Land Use And Climate Change : Effects And Solutions At The Local Level, Mark Henderson

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

China is likely already seeing the effects of climate change. Further effects in the form of increased temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and rising sea levels could be catastrophic, making action at all levels an urgent priority. While much attention is rightfully paid to reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuels, land management practices account for as much as a quarter of the net increase in greenhouse gasses. In China, urbanization is the most important and tractable phenomenon affecting the landscape, reducing carbon sequestration, as well as locking in transportation patterns that assume increasing fossil fuel use into the future. Developing systems …

Ecological Localness And Legitimacy Of Science Policy : Mapping Climate Issue In Research Over China And Taiwan, Shih-Jung Chen Jun 2009

Ecological Localness And Legitimacy Of Science Policy : Mapping Climate Issue In Research Over China And Taiwan, Shih-Jung Chen

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

As science increasingly plays a vital role in global environmental governance, localness has become the focus in scientific interpretation of nature in terms of policy legitimacy and social communication. However, localness would not germinate until the issue of global change is linked locally, a social construction process which shapes the way of interpreting nature/society interaction and affects local ecological cognition. Localness thus indicates not only legitimacy but also an imperative for responsive actions in a society. It might be argued that although political consideration, with special respect to its stance in international negotiation, determines the extent to which national policy …

The Power Of Visual Approaches In Qualitative Inquiry: The Use Of Collage Making And Concept Mapping In Experiential Research, Lynn Butler-Kisber, Tiiu Poldma Jun 2009

The Power Of Visual Approaches In Qualitative Inquiry: The Use Of Collage Making And Concept Mapping In Experiential Research, Lynn Butler-Kisber, Tiiu Poldma

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The burgeoning interest in arts-informed research and the increasing variety of visual possibilities as a result of new technologies have paved the way for researchers to explore and use visual forms of inquiry. This paper investigates how collage making and concept mapping are useful visual approaches that can inform qualitative research. It outlines specific ways that each approach can be used with examples to illustrate how the approach informs the researcher’s experience. The two approaches are compared and contrasted and issues that can arise in the work are discussed.

Knowledge, Experience And Art In An Innovative Community-Based Study, Mel Gray, Leanne Schubert Jun 2009

Knowledge, Experience And Art In An Innovative Community-Based Study, Mel Gray, Leanne Schubert

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper describes ‘Safe at Home’, a creative research project being conducted by social workers and artists and examines its theoretical underpinnings in light of contemporary theory on knowledge production. It uses the framework of Mode 1 - scientific research - and Mode 2 - problem-focused, practice-oriented, cross-disciplinary, and engaged research. The latter is portrayed as compatible with social work and creative - art - research, which recognises the importance of practical, experience-based knowledge and practice-based participatory action and intervention research. Using this framework, we explore research as a vehicle to develop useful knowledge to inform practice while also engaged …

The Conversational Self: An Approach For Using Personal Journals In Design Research, Kaye Shumack Jun 2009

The Conversational Self: An Approach For Using Personal Journals In Design Research, Kaye Shumack

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

As Goldschmidt's (1995) 'team of one', this research describes ways in which the designer, understood as agency, may conduct productive and creative internal conversations through a journal writing practice, as both participant, and as observer - as 'self', and 'self-as-other'. Conversation theory (Pask, 1975) is introduced as a theoretical frame for this approach to journal writing as a conversational practice, which works at multiple levels within the journal text. The designer (understood as self, actor, person, and 'other' agency) negotiates and describes the workings of a diversity of experiential details and social knowledge. As journal texts, these writings and sketches …

Capturing Tacit Knowledge: Documenting And Understanding Recent Methodological Innovation Used In Design Doctorates In Order To Inform Postgraduate Training Provision, Joyce S R Yee Jun 2009

Capturing Tacit Knowledge: Documenting And Understanding Recent Methodological Innovation Used In Design Doctorates In Order To Inform Postgraduate Training Provision, Joyce S R Yee

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

This paper presents a preliminary review of recent Design PhDs that identify and analyse the methodological innovation that is occurring in the field, in order to inform future provision of research training for Design PhDs. Six recently completed Design PhDs are used to highlight possible philosophical and practical models that can be adopted by future PhD design students. Four characteristics were found in Design PhD methodology; thesis-structural innovation, a ‘pick and mix’ research design approach, situating practice in the enquiry and the validation of visual analysis. The paper concludes by offering suggestions on how research training can be improved for …

The Fragility Of Social Capital, Fabio Sabatini, Angelo Antoci, Mauro Sodini Jun 2009

The Fragility Of Social Capital, Fabio Sabatini, Angelo Antoci, Mauro Sodini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper addresses two hot topics of the contemporary debate, social capital and economic growth. Our theoretical analysis sheds light on decisive but so far neglected issues: how does social capital accumulate over time? Which is the relationship between social capital, technical progress and economic growth in the long run? The analysis shows that the economy may be attracted by alternative steady states, depending on the initial social capital endowments and cultural exogenous parameters representing the relevance of social interaction and trust in well-being and production. When material consumption and relational goods are substitutable, the choice to devote more and …

The Right To Equal Aspirations And The Obligation To Be Different, As A Basis For A Common Future, Olivia Bina Jun 2009

The Right To Equal Aspirations And The Obligation To Be Different, As A Basis For A Common Future, Olivia Bina

Conference on China and Global Climate Change : Reconciling International Fairness and Protection of the Atmospheric Commons

By virtue of its sheer size and growth trajectory, China knows it cannot be ignored. The question is whether it can offer leadership in terms of greater responsibility, both towards its own people and the rest of the world. The climate change crisis is the ultimate expression of unsustainable patterns of growth. Based on this perspective of the climate change debate, I explore the theme of responsibility as traditionally focused around the need to limit emissions, but also in terms of the obligation to pursue development aspirations through a different path. I consider the argument that China’s leadership has an …

Contemporary Perceptions Of Immigrants As Threats: Is The Perceived "Criminal Immigrant" Image Supported?, Rosa Elena Chang Jun 2009

Contemporary Perceptions Of Immigrants As Threats: Is The Perceived "Criminal Immigrant" Image Supported?, Rosa Elena Chang

Open Access Dissertations

This study examined Americans' perceptions of immigrants as threats and their implications on immigration policy views as well as immigrants' actual involvement in crime. Images of immigrant groups result from the perceived threats they pose to the crime rate, economy, political power, and nativism (Blumer 1958). I argued that these perceptions result in opposition to immigrants and support for stronger measures to exclude undocumented immigrants. Of special interest for this study was the "criminal immigrant" stereotype. Previous studies demonstrate that immigrants are not highly crime-involved even when they experience additional stressors during their adaptation processes. Yet, according to Agnew's (1992) …

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey Jun 2009

Global Learning Through Partnered Inquiry, Rebecca Hovey

Lewis Global Studies Center Staff Publications

The emergence of Global Learning associated with the internationalization of U.S. higher education signals a convergence of international/global studies and international education with the potential to dramatically innovate and transform the academy. Over the past decade the original aim of international education to foster intercultural understanding has become linked with the aims of international studies to enhance our knowledge of the world, and in particular, the ways in which new knowledge is created through non-western epistemologies and cultural perspectives. This paper seeks to situate the emerging discourse and initiatives around global learning in an understanding of the transformation potential of …
