Resilience And Speed Of Recovery After Critical Illness, Tiffany Huffman, R.N., B.S.N. Jun 2009

Resilience And Speed Of Recovery After Critical Illness, Tiffany Huffman, R.N., B.S.N.

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Length of stay in the critical care setting is a topic of concern for both patients and the health care system. However, the subject of psychological influences on recovery time after critical illness is a one that little to no research has been conducted. This extensive literature review aims to look specifically at the relationship between resilience and speed of recovery after critical illness and research that has been done on this subject matter. Within this review lies an extensive review of literature, in-depth definitions of resilience, factors affecting length of stay in the intensive care units, a theoretical framework …

Making Phenomenological Inquiry Accessible: A Review Of Jonathan A. Smith, Paul Flowers, And Michael Larkin’S Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis: Theory, Method, And Research, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report

Jonathan A. Smith, Paul Flowers, and Michael Larkin’s Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis: Theory, Method, and Research is an accessible account of an emergent qualitative psychology methodology which has great potential for studying a variety of psychological areas as well as being applied to studies outside of the behavioral sciences. The authors avoid the complexity found in some texts on phenomenological inquiry and present a simple plan for conducting this style of research.

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz Jun 2009

Integration With Writing Programs: A Strategy For Quantitative Reasoning Program Development, Nathan D. Grawe, Carol A. Rutz

Numeracy

As an inherently interdisciplinary endeavor, quantitative reasoning (QR) risks falling through the cracks between the traditional “silos” of higher education. This article describes one strategy for developing a truly cross-campus QR initiative: leverage the existing structures of campus writing programs by placing QR in the context of argument. We first describe the integration of Carleton College’s Quantitative Inquiry, Reasoning, and Knowledge initiative with the Writing Program. Based on our experience, we argue that such an approach leads to four benefits: it reflects important aspects of QR often overlooked by other approaches; it defuses the commonly raised objection that QR is …

Achieving Widespread, Democratic Education In The United States Today: Dewey’S Ideas Reconsidered, Elizabeth Meadows, Katherine Blatchford Jun 2009

Achieving Widespread, Democratic Education In The United States Today: Dewey’S Ideas Reconsidered, Elizabeth Meadows, Katherine Blatchford

Education and Culture

Excellent, democratic education that furthers each person’s potential, success and happiness for her own and others’ well-being is not yet widespread in the U.S. today. Dewey’s The Public and Its Problems has much to say about the possibilities and challenges of achieving this goal. This paper examines Dewey’s ideas about how a public for widespread, excellent education can form through the development of sound public opinion based on widely disseminated, accurate and relevant information and through the restructuring of associations among people. The crucial role of the educator in the formation of a public emerges through this examination.

Extending The Capability Paradigm To Address The Complexity Of Disability, Jean-Luc Dubois, Jean-Francois Trani Jun 2009

Extending The Capability Paradigm To Address The Complexity Of Disability, Jean-Luc Dubois, Jean-Francois Trani

Brown School Faculty Publications

Amartya Sen looks at people’s well-being in terms of functioning and freedom, rather than in terms of the amount of goods or services consumed. The capability approach developed by Sen deals with what people are able to achieve by using these commodities. Concerning disability, he wrote: “We must take note that a disabled person may not be able to do the many things that an able-bodied individual can, with the same bundle of commodities” (Sen, 1985 p.7). The capability approach makes it possible to analyse the economic situation of people with disabilities in a different way. What becomes important is …

Southern Rock Music As A Cultural Form, Brandon P. Keith Jun 2009

Southern Rock Music As A Cultural Form, Brandon P. Keith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Southern rock bands of the 1970s were a cultural formation that displayed racially and politically progressive views in the post-civil rights South through the cultural form of southern rock music. Southern rock bands, such as The Allman Brothers Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, responded to the political and social changes in the South brought forth by the civil rights movement by reconciling pride for southern heritage with progressive racial views through their music. The southern rock era was essentially between the years of 1969, when The Allman Brothers Band released their first album, until 1977, whe n a tragic airplane crash …

Small World Networks With Segregation Patterns And Brokers, Edoardo Gallo Jun 2009

Small World Networks With Segregation Patterns And Brokers, Edoardo Gallo

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Many social networks have the following properties: (i) a short average distance between any two individuals; (ii) a high clustering coefficient; (iii) segregation patterns; the presence of (iv) brokers and (v) hubs. (i) and (ii) define a small world network. This paper develops a strategic network formation model where agents have heterogeneous knowledge of the network: cognizant agents know the whole network, while ignorant ones are less knowledgeable. For a broad range of parameters, all pairwise Nash (PN) networks have properties (i)-(iv). There are some PN networks with one hub. Cognizant agents have higher betweenness centrality: they are the brokers …

Team Formation In A Network, Markus Kinateder Jun 2009

Team Formation In A Network, Markus Kinateder

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Two project leaders (or entrepreneurs) in a network, which captures social relations, recruit players in a strategic, competitive and time-limited process. Each team has an optimal size depending on the project’s quality. This is a random variable with a commonly known distribution. Only the corresponding project leader observes its realization. Any decision is only observed by the involved agents. The set of pure strategy Sequential Equilibria is characterized by giving an algorithm that selects one equilibrium at a time. An agent’s expected payoff is related to his position in the network, though no centrality measure in the literature captures this …

Power In The Heterogeneous Connections Model: The Emergence Of Core-Periphery Networks, Dotan Persitz Jun 2009

Power In The Heterogeneous Connections Model: The Emergence Of Core-Periphery Networks, Dotan Persitz

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The heterogeneous connections model is a generalization of the homogeneous connections model of Jackson and Wolinsky (1996) in which the intrinsic value of each connection is set by a discrete, positive and symmetric function that depends solely on the types of the two end agents. Core periphery networks are defined as networks in which the agents' set can be partitioned into two subsets, one in which the members are completely connected among themselves and the other where there are no internal links. A two-type society is defined as "power based" if both types of agents prefer to connect to one …

The Main Effects Of Gender And Faculty Rank On Occupational Stressors, Technology Stressors, And Coping Strategies Of Journalism And Mass Communication Educators In The U.S, Paulette Helen Walter Jun 2009

The Main Effects Of Gender And Faculty Rank On Occupational Stressors, Technology Stressors, And Coping Strategies Of Journalism And Mass Communication Educators In The U.S, Paulette Helen Walter

Theses and Dissertations

Assistant professors who teach journalism and mass communication tend to be more stressed than either associate professors or full professors, and female faculty members are more stressed than male faculty. Both female and male assistant professors ranked the following three items as causing them the highest stress: having inadequate time to devote to research, not having clear criteria for evaluation of research, publication, or creative activities, and teaching inadequately prepared students. Journalism and mass communication faculty generally use positive coping strategies such as prioritizing work or planning ahead. Additionally, across the board, the levels of stress reported for preparing to …

'From Savigny Through Sir Henry Maine': Roscoe Pound’S Flawed Portrait Of James Coolidge Carter’S Historical Jurisprudence, Lewis A. Grossman Jun 2009

'From Savigny Through Sir Henry Maine': Roscoe Pound’S Flawed Portrait Of James Coolidge Carter’S Historical Jurisprudence, Lewis A. Grossman

Working Papers

In Roscoe Pound's scathing 1909 review of Law: Its Origin, Growth and Function, American jurist James Coolidge Carter's magnum opus, Pound asserted that Carter's conception of law "comes from Savigny through Sir Henry Maine." Frederich Karl von Savigny and Sir Henry Maine were the most prominent representatives of the German and English historical schools of jurisprudence, respectively. For his part, Carter was the leading representative of historical jurisprudence in the United States.

Other scholars, following Pound, have similarly linked Carter to Savigny and Maine, especially to the former. Moreover, various authors have noted the great effect these European jurists had …

Cournot Competition On A Network Of Markets And Firms, Rahmi Ilkilic Jun 2009

Cournot Competition On A Network Of Markets And Firms, Rahmi Ilkilic

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Suppose markets and firms are connected in a bi-partite network, where firms can only supply to the markets they are connected to. Firms compete a la Cournot and decide how much to supply to each market they have a link with. We assume that markets have linear demand functions and firms have convex quadratic cost functions. We show there exists a unique equilibrium in any given network of firms and markets. We provide a formula which expresses the quantities at an equilibrium as a function of a network centrality measure.
