Management And Disaster, Eugene Soraghan Oct 2009

Management And Disaster, Eugene Soraghan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect management has on disaster response and recovery. Specifically, the investigation will determine what management model or methodology seems to produce the greatest effect when preparing for, reacting to, and recovering from a disaster. Any firm with a managerial hierarchy utilizes some methodology or model to organize and oversee its personnel and operations, even if this model may not be consciously recognized by the organization, escape a direct association with a theory, or lack a proper name. While these models may prove effective at internal regulation and profit realization, they consistently …

Wages Required For Self-Sufficiency In South Dakota, Kristi Corocran, Michael Mccurry Oct 2009

Wages Required For Self-Sufficiency In South Dakota, Kristi Corocran, Michael Mccurry

SDSU Extension Circulars

This publication discusses how much money a South Dakota breadwinner has to earn to be considered self-sufficient. The data presented is at the county level, reflecting the difference in cost of living among the state’s counties. The authors replicate the techniques developed by Diana Pearce in The Self-Sufficiency Standard for South Dakota (2000). Pearce described self-sufficiency as “earning adequate wages to provide for basic needs without additional support.” As Pearce’s publication has become dated and it seems unreasonable to wait for another regional study to update our local data, in respectfully updating her report, we stand on Dr. Pearce’s shoulders.

An Application Of The Bass Diffusion Model To Border Security And Illegal Immigration, Ayeh Ohene-Asah Oct 2009

An Application Of The Bass Diffusion Model To Border Security And Illegal Immigration, Ayeh Ohene-Asah

Theses

This research's objective was to apply the Bass Diffusion model to border security and illegal immigration. The Potential Actual Illegal Immigration Population (PAIIP) model was created using the Vensim software program to illustrate and simulate illegal border crossings and assess the impact of detention, deportation, and amnesty on the communication between potential and actual illegal immigrants. This systems modeling approach combined with a secondary analysis method was used for data collection and analysis. Results indicate that no single or combination of policies solves the problem of illegal immigration. This study's conclusions point out that the greater the quality of information …

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices For Risk Education: How To Implement Kap Surveys, Hi

Global CWD Repository

The KAP is a representative survey conducted on a particular population to identify the knowledge (K), attitudes (A) and practices (P) of a population on a specific topic – landmines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW) in our case. In the majority of KAP studies, data are gathered orally by an interviewer who uses a structured, standardised questionnaire. These data can then be quantitatively or qualitatively analysed according to the objectives and the ins and outs of the survey. A KAP survey can be specially designed to collect information on the issue of, but it is also possible to include …

Climate Change And Sustainable Development: The Quest For Green Communities, Part I, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This is the first of two commentaries that explore the role of local governments in mitigating and adapting to climate change through sustainable development strategies. They focus on the significant authority to regulate land use and building construction that is delegated to local governments by their states, and how that authority can be coordinated with the roles and responsibilities of state and federal governments to manage climate change and achieve sustainable development.

The Irreducibly Normative Nature Of Provocation/Passion, Stephen J. Morse Oct 2009

The Irreducibly Normative Nature Of Provocation/Passion, Stephen J. Morse

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

I agree with Professor Fontaine that provocation/passion is best interpreted as a partial excuse, but the ground for my conclusion is normative and not analytic. Indeed, I fear that he has not made the analytic case in large part because he begs a question about failed justifications that has only a normative and not an analytic answer. This Essay first briefly provides my own understanding of provocation/ passion. In the course of doing so, I address Professor Fontaine's argument that provocation/passion should also be applied to people with provocation interpretational bias. I then turn to why Fontaine's case for …

Brazil serves as a potent example of a nation striving to meet the public healthcare needs of a complex and diverse society. Age, sex, and residential neighborhood for clients tested for HIV during an eight month period in 2007-2008 at HUCF and CTA were statistically compared. In comparison to CTA, the …

Information Needs In A Hurricane Gustav Evacuation Shelter: Reflections On A Librarian’S Volunteer Experience, Donna Braquet

The Southeastern Librarian

For three years following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, residents of the Gulf Coast enjoyed a reprieve from serious threats. But in 2008 Hurricanes Gustav and Ike confirmed that massive evacuations are now a reality of hurricane season. A consequence of such large evacuations is the establishment of hundreds of shelters across the country. Opportunities exist to improve information assistance and information dissemination in hurricane shelters. Information professionals can help by conducting research and documenting their experiences in shelters. This article discusses observations of evacuees’ information needs at a Hurricane Gustav shelter in Knoxville, Tennessee, and details the resources and methods …

This is Old Dominion University's 10th annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Untangling The Relationship Between Libraries, Young Adults And Web 2.0: The Necessity Of A Critical Perspective, Lucia Cedeira Serantes Oct 2009

Untangling The Relationship Between Libraries, Young Adults And Web 2.0: The Necessity Of A Critical Perspective, Lucia Cedeira Serantes

Publications and Research

Purpose: This paper addresses a gap in the analysis of the dynamic and challenging relationship between libraries, Web 2.0 and young adults, suggesting the relevance of a critical approach.

Methodology/Approach: This paper represents an exploratory literature review with the objective of identifying a possible gap in the way the LIS community is addressing the concept of Web 2.0.

Findings: Findings indicate that the research produced in other fields, such as Communication or Computer Science; the way young adults interrelate with new technologies; and the need for collaboration between practitioners and researchers justify and support the use of a critical perspective …

Structures For Environmental Action, Katherine Bunting-Howart, Avi Brisman, Willett Kempton, Dorothy C. Holland, Peggy F. Bartlett

Southern Anthropologist

This article develops a typology of what we term “structures for action”—strategies, mechanisms, and means—used by local environmental groups to facilitate actions such as lifestyle shifts, civic protest, and environmental preservation. Based on data from nineteen groups in several states, we distinguish between internal structures that facilitate action for members of the groups and external structures that facilitate action among nonmembers and other groups. Within both internal and external structures, we identify three dimensions: knowledge, meaning, and praxis. Our typology of structures for action is designed to stimulate further research and to be useful for environmental groups, as well as …
