The Role Of Narrative Therapy Techniques In Fostering Parent Self-Efficacy, Shoshana M. Narva Aug 2009

The Role Of Narrative Therapy Techniques In Fostering Parent Self-Efficacy, Shoshana M. Narva

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore whether narrative therapy techniques helped to foster self-efficacy in the context of parent education. In particular this researcher was interested in whether utilizing a narrative approach while facilitating a parent education class would result in parents feeling more confident in their abilities as parents then in a parent education class utilizing a different pedagogy. Two focus groups were held with two parent education groups, two interviews were conducted each with one facilitator from each parenting group and a pre- and post- parent self-efficacy measure was given at the beginning and at the …

The Experience Of Social Workers Who Use Thought Field Therapy Or Emotional Freedom Technique, Tara Nicotra

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This thesis explores social workers' experiences with their use of Thought Field Therapy (TFT) and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) with their clients. These techniques, which are also known as tapping, involve tapping one's own fingers in a specific sequence on specific points on the body while tuning into undesired feelings in an effort to eliminate feelings of distress. For this study, I conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve clinical social workers. The study participants had been practicing either EFT or TFT for an average of eight years, with three years being the least amount of time that a participant had been …

Lovers Without Borders : Self-Reflections On The Relationships Of Cross-National And Cross-Cultural Couples Of Korean Women Partnered With North American Non-Asian Men, Omer Astar Mendelson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how couples, composed of a Korean woman and a non-Asian North American man, who are in long-term relationship, perceive the challenges and benefits of their relationship, and to gain an understanding of how they negotiate, interweave and construct their relationship. Six intermarried couples, where the female partner had been born and was raised primarily in Korea, and the male partner came from the United States were interviewed. Special emphasis was placed on how the woman's experiences of migration, including loss and adaptation to a new culture, have affected her and have …

Free To Act Any Way He Wanted : Male Gender Identity And Professional Wrestling, Daniel Sarnat Millman Aug 2009

Free To Act Any Way He Wanted : Male Gender Identity And Professional Wrestling, Daniel Sarnat Millman

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study explores professional wrestling as a performance of masculinity. After briefly outlining what American professional wrestling is, and why its study is highly relevant to the field of social work, this study considers how professional wrestling may meet needs of its male fans related to their experiences of gender identity development. This study draws on Sharon Mazer's work of conceptualizing professional wrestling as a performance of masculinity. It draws on a body of feminist, postmodern, psychoanalytic theory which critiques the notion of gender as a binary, essential, and biologically determined category, and asserts that each person's development of …

Influence Of A Multidimensional Model Of Antiracism Training On White Clinicians Positive Self-Regard, White Privilege Attitudes And Social Identity Development, Mareike Noel Muszynski

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

A mixed-methods evaluation of a racism training examined whether education about a social identity development model predicated on critical race theory influenced white clinicians' attitudes regarding white privilege, level of positive self-regard, and attempted to explore how participants processed their social identity development in a follow up questionnaire. Fourteen self-identifying white clinicians completed pre and post surveys the day of a two and half hour work-shop based training. Five of those participants went on to complete the final survey including qualitative questions regarding their identity development. White privilege attitudes were measured by the White Privilege Attitudes Scale (WPAS; Pinterits, Poteat …

Racial And Ethnocultural Considerations In The Treatment Of Combat Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder With Servicemembers And Veterans Of Color, Nada Michael Aug 2009

Racial And Ethnocultural Considerations In The Treatment Of Combat Related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder With Servicemembers And Veterans Of Color, Nada Michael

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Research from past wars has shown that veterans of color have significantly higher rates of PTSD than their white counterparts and a higher prevalence over their lifetime. Studies have sought to explain these differences and have found that while there are perhaps no racial genetic predispositions to the development of PTSD, ethno-cultural factors which are often associated with race play a significant role in the etiology and treatment of PTSD and therefore are important to consider when working with this population. This purpose of this study was to assess the extent to which clinicians who work with servicemembers and veterans …

Having Our Say : Stressors And Readjustment Issues Of Veterans Of The Wars In Iraq And Afghanistan From The Perspective Of Loved Ones, Karen Davis Mcginty

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explores the stressors and readjustment issues experienced by veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from the perspective of loved ones. A review of the literature on veterans' experiences is vast; however there is little literature that discusses the stressors from the perspective of a loved one. This study examines the "common" post-combat stressors, psychosocial issues, and mental illnesses impacting combat veterans in the words and observations of those closest to them. Twelve loved ones of veterans of the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan participated in this study, providing narrative data based on their veterans' …

Therapist As Client : Revisiting The Idea Of Clinicians In Therapy, Laura Elisabeth Mowrey Aug 2009

Therapist As Client : Revisiting The Idea Of Clinicians In Therapy, Laura Elisabeth Mowrey

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The subject of graduate students undergoing their own therapeutic process in order to become more competent clinicians is a subject of much debate in the literature. There is evidence to suggest both benefits and risks to clinicians undergoing the therapeutic process. This study was undertaken to further explore how clinicians perceive their own mental health, if they have been in therapy previously, found it to be helpful, or unhelpful, and if they think that personal therapy should be a requirement for graduate students who are studying to be clinicians. This was a mixed methods study, which was exploratory in nature. …

A Follow-Up Study Exploring The Transformative Effects Of Wilderness Therapy On Adolescents With Histories Of Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Programs, Albany, Oregon, George Carter Herrity

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This quantitative, quasi-experimental study examined 57 adolescents, ages 13 to 18, who attended the Catherine Freer Wilderness Therapy Program 21-day trek. The program is based in Albany, Oregon. The purpose of this study was to conduct a follow-up to Ganapol's (2008) study in order to further assess the treatment modality, wilderness therapy, through the lens of trauma. More specifically, this study focused on wilderness therapy's potential to act as a transformative experience for adolescents with histories of trauma. For use in this research, the phenomenological term, transformative experience, corresponds to a decrease in trauma symptomatology, an increase in psychological resilience, …

Engaging Fathers : Examining Social Service Agency Father-Friendliness And Its Relationships With Father Involvement, Cole Douglas Hooley

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Social scientists have become increasingly interested over the past 30 years in the role fathers play in child development. As a result, a large bank of research has been accumulated; however, one area in this literature which remains understudied is the relationships between agency father friendliness and father involvement. This paper is one attempt to understand the intricacies of the interchange point between fathers and agencies by using longitudinal data collected by the Supporting Father Involvement study, specifically examining the associations between father involvement and father friendliness, as well as the relationships among the various components of agency father friendliness …

Stuck In The Sibling Relationship : Growing Up With A Sibling With A Serious Mental Illness And How Intimate Relationships Later In Life May Be Affected, Laura Pereira Jacinto Aug 2009

Stuck In The Sibling Relationship : Growing Up With A Sibling With A Serious Mental Illness And How Intimate Relationships Later In Life May Be Affected, Laura Pereira Jacinto

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study examines the experience of growing up with a sibling with a serious mental illness and how this phenomenon may then affect intimate relationships later in life. Theoretical perspectives of both trauma theory and object relations theory are applied to this phenomenon and how it affects the well siblings. Findings of the current study suggest that individuals internalize aspects of this early relationship and also internalize aspects of the relationship with their parents who are focusing so much care and attention on the mentally ill sibling. Patterns of maladaptive relationships may then continue to occur in the future. …

Narrative Approaches To Recovery-Oriented Psychotherapy With Individuals With Schizophrenia, Michelle Hart Marlowe Aug 2009

Narrative Approaches To Recovery-Oriented Psychotherapy With Individuals With Schizophrenia, Michelle Hart Marlowe

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical study examines narrative approaches in recovery-oriented psychotherapy with individuals with schizophrenia. This study was undertaken in an effort to address a gap in the literature regarding theoretical frameworks to guide psychotherapists in providing services that facilitate the recovery process for individuals with schizophrenia. Psychotherapy has had an evolving and often contentious role in the treatment of schizophrenia. Psychotherapy was once a standard form of treatment for schizophrenia, but currently psychopharmacology is the dominate treatment method. Interest in psychotherapy in treatment for schizophrenia is once again increasing, however. Influenced by the mental health recovery movement, the mental health system …

An Exploratory Study Of Transracial Adoptions : African American Perspectives, Tarn Carolyn Martin

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to determine if what the National Association of Black Social Workers states; that African American children raised by Caucasian adults are at risk for being outcast by the African American community. The NABSW believes that transracial adoptees are not able to develop a healthy sense of self when raised by Caucasians. For this study I interviewed 8 participants who identify as African American who were between the ages of 18-47. The participants were asked a series of questions in regards to their development and how they have fared being raised by Caucasian parents. Most of the …

Establishing The Core Self And Its Significance Developmentally : A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Achieving Self Cohesion And Entrance Into Adulthood, Joseph James Lacy Aug 2009

Establishing The Core Self And Its Significance Developmentally : A Qualitative Exploration Of The Relationship Between Achieving Self Cohesion And Entrance Into Adulthood, Joseph James Lacy

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between achieving self cohesion and the transition into adulthood. Arnett (1998, 2000, 2004) has introduced a developmental stage which is neither adolescence nor adulthood, emerging adulthood, during which identity exploration is occurring. This exploration involves the questioning of one's worldviews, relationships and career path. As this discovery evolves one becomes more committed within these areas resulting with a cohesive self. Drawing from Erik Erikson's (1950, 1968) psychosocial stages of development and James Marcia's (2002) identity development model this thesis will explore identity development and the entrance into adulthood. This study …

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Lesbian Coming Out Process, Amy Kirsztajn Aug 2009

Childhood Sexual Abuse And Lesbian Coming Out Process, Amy Kirsztajn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study sought to look at whether being sexually abused during childhood has an affect on the coming out process for lesbian women. Using Morris' (1997) model of coming out as a reference, themes of trust around coming out, timing of homosexual self-awareness and the double stigma of being abused and identifying as a lesbian were explored. This qualitative study involved 7 semi-structured interviews of women who were over the age of 25, had been sexually abused before the age of 15 and currently identify as lesbian. Due to the lack of time and sensitive subject matter the small sample …

Do You See What I See? : Making The Invisible Visible Through An Exploration Of The Intersubjective Experience Of Social Work Clinicians Working With Fat Clients, Lauren Polly Hanson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study was designed with flexible research methods to explore experiences of clinical social workers in sitting with and developing relationships with fat clients. Using an intersubjective theoretical lens, this research investigates clinicians' countertransference or beliefs about fatness in the relationship building process with fat clients. An analysis of the literature revealed multiple meanings for fat, complex dynamics in therapeutic relationships and potential parallels between some racial oppressions and fat oppression using the concept of visible difference. This exploratory study presents findings based on nine semi-structured interviews with clinical social workers who see fat clients. Participants were asked about …

The Conceptualization And Integration Of Conscious Breathing Into Clinical Practice, Mia Rachel Gutfreund Aug 2009

The Conceptualization And Integration Of Conscious Breathing Into Clinical Practice, Mia Rachel Gutfreund

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore how clinicians integrate conscious breathing into their practice as psychotherapists. Sixteen therapists practicing in the San Francisco Area were interviewed for this qualitative study. Participants provided rich data in terms of how they conceptualize and utilize conscious breathing techniques, as well as how they think about the place of conscious breathing within traditional "talk" therapy settings. The findings augment existing research on the topic, and provide support for the notion that conscious breathing can be used as a therapeutic technique to advance such goals as mutual regulation, emotional attunement, a sense of …
