All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Chinese Spirit, Russian Soul, and American Materialism: Images of America in Twentieth-Century Chinese and Russian Travelogues This study is concerned with the process of understanding and representation of the Other in travel narratives and the role of the traveler's cultural tradition and ideological beliefs in this process. I explore the images of the United States in some of the most influential twentieth-century Chinese and Russian travelogues. There are deep cultural differences between China and Russia, yet their relationships with the West show certain similarities. The first important parallel is that the contacts with the West was a catalyst in the …

Educating Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisors: A Grounded Theory Study Of Supervisory Wisdom, Judith R. Ragsdale Jan 2009

Educating Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisors: A Grounded Theory Study Of Supervisory Wisdom, Judith R. Ragsdale

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an 80 year old education modality that provides professional education for students of pastoral care. Supervision is central to the CPE process. Pastoral supervisors in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) have done little writing about their work educating Students in Supervisory Education (SSEs). The purpose of this dissertation is to identify and interview those practitioners in ACPE who have been identified by their peers as excellent in practice, and to cull their wisdom by listening to and categorizing their experience of supervising SSEs. The research question to the supervisors was: What is your …

A Model For Teaching Ethical Meta-Principles: A Descriptive Experience, Irma S. Jones, Olivia Rivas, Margarita Mancillas Jan 2009

A Model For Teaching Ethical Meta-Principles: A Descriptive Experience, Irma S. Jones, Olivia Rivas, Margarita Mancillas

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

As students, educators, outreach and community service experts enter their distinct professional worlds, each will be compelled to make a wide variety of decisions. The shaping of peoples’ ethical beliefs occurs through personal experiences as well as family, culture, religion and peer pressure. In order for these students, educators, outreach and community service experts to make decisions needed as they join or continue in the workforce, college and university professors must endeavor to instill in them high ethical standards. This paper will introduce a model for teaching the five ethical meta-principles using video, reflection and case studies and will describe …

Investigating The Effects Of Marriage And Relationship Education On Couples' Communication Skills: A Meta-Analytic Study, Victoria L. Blanchard, Alan J. Hawkins, Scott A. Baldwin, Elizabeth B. Fawcett Jan 2009

Investigating The Effects Of Marriage And Relationship Education On Couples' Communication Skills: A Meta-Analytic Study, Victoria L. Blanchard, Alan J. Hawkins, Scott A. Baldwin, Elizabeth B. Fawcett

Faculty Publications

This meta-analysis probes into previous research substantiating the positive effects of marriage and relationship education (MRE) on couples' communication skills. We reviewed 97 MRE research reports that yielded 143 distinct evaluation studies. We found modest evidence that MRE functions both as a universal prevention and as a selective or indicated prevention. That is, MRE demonstrates program effects at longer term follow-ups for more distressed couples. In addition, we found that observational assessments produced larger effects than self-report assessments, although interpreting the meaning of this difference is difficult.

Alchoholism And Intimate Partner Violence: Effects On Children's Psychosocial Adjustment, Keith Klostermann, Michelle L. Kelley Jan 2009

Alchoholism And Intimate Partner Violence: Effects On Children's Psychosocial Adjustment, Keith Klostermann, Michelle L. Kelley

Psychology Faculty Publications

It is widely recognized that alcoholism and relationship violence often have serious consequences for adults; however, children living with alcoholic parents are susceptible to the deleterious familial environments these caregivers frequently create. Given the prevalence of IPV among patients entering substance abuse treatment, coupled with the negative familial consequences associated with these types of behavior, this review explores what have been, to this point, two divergent lines of research: (a) the effects of parental alcoholism on children, and (b) the effects of children's exposure to intimate partner violence. In this article, the interrelationship between alcoholism and IPV is examined, with …

Music And Community: Interdependence And Shared Learning In An Undergraduate Elementary Music Methods Course, Lisa Huisman Koops Jan 2009

Music And Community: Interdependence And Shared Learning In An Undergraduate Elementary Music Methods Course, Lisa Huisman Koops

Faculty Scholarship

In this study, the author investigated the creation of a community of learners in an under- graduate elementary music methods course. Participants included undergraduate students (n = 23) and a professor at a Midwestern liberal arts college. Data consisted of fieldnotes from class observations and interviews with the professor and students. The following priorities and concepts emerged as themes: interdependence, shared learning, personal growth, safe environment, and inclusiveness. The success of the community of learners seemed to be due in part to the professor’s dynamic, student-centered, interdependent approach to the course. Transferable aspects related to the creation of a community …

Socially Engaged Buddhist Nuns: Activism In Taiwan And North America, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd Jan 2009

Socially Engaged Buddhist Nuns: Activism In Taiwan And North America, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

The last decades of the twentieth century have been a time of new visibility and social activism for Buddhists in Taiwan and around the world. This paper compares the social engagement of nuns in the Chinese Buddhist tradition in Taiwan and North America. I would like to argue that whereas nuns in Taiwan have developed a variety of approaches to social involvement, their counterparts in the Chinese diaspora in North America have had to face a set of challenges specific to overseas Chinese communities in addition to Chinese Buddhist tradition. The article concludes with reflections on the prospects for nuns' …

The Relationship Between Assistive Technology State Standards For Teachers, Assistive Technology Implementation, And Student Performance In The Context Of Evidence-Based Practice, Elizabeth Minchin Dalton Jan 2009

The Relationship Between Assistive Technology State Standards For Teachers, Assistive Technology Implementation, And Student Performance In The Context Of Evidence-Based Practice, Elizabeth Minchin Dalton

Open Access Dissertations

Purpose: Consideration of assistive technology (AT) for special education students has been federally mandated since 1997. Since the 2002 No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), rigorous evidence-based educational practices are also mandated. While national technology standards for teachers in general education exist to guide educational technology (ET), it is not clear if AT standards exist for U.S. teachers, or on what evidence standards are based. The purposes of this study, therefore , were to 1) describe three state-level regulatory elements related to AT: i) presence of formally adopted AT standards , ii) level of scientific evidence supporting those standards and …

Derrida's Daughter: A Dialogue Postmortem On Love., Heather D. Zias Jan 2009

Derrida's Daughter: A Dialogue Postmortem On Love., Heather D. Zias

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

As the illegitimate daughter of one of the twentieth century’s most intriguing philosophers, at least to literary folk affiliated with universities of some repute, the author’s life has been suspended in the interstices of celebrity and ignominy, erudition and erethism, Stanford University Press and Sinclair Community College, and so much so, that her life seemed to be nothing but this conjunction, that is—and. Unwilling to cite her famous father (who, though absent, was nevertheless present to her mind as a wish or a hope) so that she might make her own name, the author moved about incognito in literary circles …

Street Stops And Broken Windows Revisited: The Demography And Logic Of Proactive Policing In A Safe And Changing City, Jeffrey Fagan, Amanda Geller, Garth Davies, Valerie West Jan 2009

Street Stops And Broken Windows Revisited: The Demography And Logic Of Proactive Policing In A Safe And Changing City, Jeffrey Fagan, Amanda Geller, Garth Davies, Valerie West

Faculty Scholarship

The contributions of order-maintenance policing and broken windows theory to New York City’s remarkable crime decline have been the subject of contentious debate. The dominant policing tactic in New York since the 1990s has been aggressive interdiction of citizens through street encounters in the search for weapons or drugs. Research showed that minority citizens in the 1990s were disproportionately stopped, frisked and searched at rates significantly higher than would be predicted by their race-specific crime rates, and that this excess enforcement was explained by the social structure of predominantly minority neighborhoods than by either their disorder or their crime rates. …

Pot As Pretext: Marijuana, Race And The New Disorder In New York City Street Policing, Amanda Geller, Jeffrey Fagan Jan 2009

Pot As Pretext: Marijuana, Race And The New Disorder In New York City Street Policing, Amanda Geller, Jeffrey Fagan

Faculty Scholarship

Although possession of small quantities of marijuana has been decriminalized in New York State since the late 1970s, arrests for marijuana possession in New York City have increased more than tenfold since the mid-1990s, and remain high more than ten years later. This rise has been a notable component of the City’s “Order Maintenance Policing” strategy, designed to aggressively target low-level offenses, usually through street interdictions known as “Stop, Question, and Frisk” activity. We analyze data on 2.2 million stops and arrests carried out from 2004 to 2008, and identify significant racial disparities in the implementation of marijuana enforcement. These …

Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Army Helicopter Flight Training, Michael L. Wesolek Jan 2009

Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Army Helicopter Flight Training, Michael L. Wesolek

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the U.S. Army's new helicopter flight training program, Flight School XXI (FSXXI), in comparison to the previous (legacy) flight training program. The goal of this research was to determine whether or not FSXXI produces graduates that become fully mission capable pilots in fewer flight hours than the legacy flight training program. Readiness level progression rates of graduates of FSXXI and the legacy flight training program were compared to determine if there was a statistically significant difference between the two programs. These data were supplemented by an instructor pilot survey …

Getting The Bug: Exploring Running Group Therapy For Youth With Affective Disorders, Jamie Lee Bell Jan 2009

Getting The Bug: Exploring Running Group Therapy For Youth With Affective Disorders, Jamie Lee Bell

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Mental health problems in adolescents place them on a trajectory for ongoing difficulties into adulthood. Treating youth with affective disorders using conventional interventions such as medication and talk therapy can be problematic. Important questions have been raised about the efficacy and safety of medications and some youths’ willingness to engage in counseling. There is, therefore, a need for constant attention to innovative and youth focused treatment options.

Since 2006, Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada has offered youth diagnosed primarily with depression and anxiety an opportunity to address their mental illness with the alternative treatment of running. The purpose …
