Recruiting And Selecting Child Welfare Staff, Michelle Graef, Megan Paul, Tara L. Myers

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

In this chapter, the focus is on recruiting and selecting new staff and on the steps agencies can take to ensure that they are doing the best possible job to attract and hire a high-performing, committed workforce. This chapter reviews a number of strategies for improving recruitment and selection processes and provides case examples from the authors' work with child protection agencies in several states. These projects have been accomplished by a team of researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Center on Children, Families, and the Law (CCFL). Some of the techniques described here will be familiar, whereas others are …

The Modern Problem-Solving Court Movement: Domination Of Discourse And Untold Stories Of Criminal Justice Reform, Mae Quinn Jan 2009

The Modern Problem-Solving Court Movement: Domination Of Discourse And Untold Stories Of Criminal Justice Reform, Mae Quinn

Journal Articles

There is a chasm between the rhetoric about and the reality of modern court reform movements. It is a deeply troubling divide. This Article, responding to the work of Professor Jane Spinak, is not concerned with innovations within the family court system. Rather, it examines modern criminal justice reforms.1 It focuses on the claims of the contemporary ―problem-solving court‖ movement—a movement that has resulted in the development of thousands of specialized criminal courts across the country over the last two decades.2

Preventive Health Engineering In Earlier And Later Life, Johanna E.M.H. Bronswijk, William D. Kearns Jan 2009

Preventive Health Engineering In Earlier And Later Life, Johanna E.M.H. Bronswijk, William D. Kearns

Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling Faculty Publications

Preserving autonomy and independence up to the highest ages calls for a major reduction in chronic conditions. By applying the Compressing Morbidity concept that concentrates the period of senescence near the end of life, the number of healthy years can be enlarged. Many chronic conditions are elicited by lifetime exposures to environmental factors, such as (indoor) air pollution (asthma, COPD, lung cancer), noise exposure (hearing disorders), or physically unbalanced work or sports (mobility disorders), to name a few. Unfortunately, in earlier life there is little interest in expected later health. Persuasive technology is useful here. Since, in the Western World, …

A Culture Of Giving: The Effect Of Activism On Teenage Girls And Their Ability To Investigate Social Change Through Volunteerism, Amanda Settlage Jan 2009

A Culture Of Giving: The Effect Of Activism On Teenage Girls And Their Ability To Investigate Social Change Through Volunteerism, Amanda Settlage

Whittier Scholars Program

My senior project is studying the effects that being involved in community organizations has on teenage girls ages 14-18. My primary focus has been on volunteerism in an activist capacity, especially for social change. This project has been done in a way that argues that volunteerism is positive for girls and their communities. I chose to study teenage girls because I have a broader interest in the effect that being involved in community organization has on women but also because I wanted to look at the lifetime effects of volunteering at a relatively young age. Also, teenagers are among the …

Family-Centered Early Intervention In North America: Have Home-Based Programmes Lived Up To Their Promise For High-Risk Families?, James Ponzetti, Grant J. Charles, Sheila Marshall, Jan Hare Jan 2009

Family-Centered Early Intervention In North America: Have Home-Based Programmes Lived Up To Their Promise For High-Risk Families?, James Ponzetti, Grant J. Charles, Sheila Marshall, Jan Hare

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

While early intervention programming is not new in North America, such programs have gone through a rapid expansion in recent years. This has been motivated by the recognition of the need for timely intervention, the development of a family rather than a child focused practice philosophy and the desire on the part of funding organizations to save money by promoting less expensive programming. This article reviews the various components of early intervention programmes in North America while also questioning aspects of current practice. There is a clear need for family-centered intervention. This should not be in question. However, the fundamental …

Valuing Equality In Irish Social Care, Niall Hanlon Jan 2009

Valuing Equality In Irish Social Care, Niall Hanlon

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

In this article the author critiques Irish social care by presenting an equality perspective on practice. An equality perspective involves developing emancipatory practices, that is, ways of helping that provide egalitarian solutions and outcomes. Although emancipatory values are often contrasted with traditional social care values, the author seeks a pragmatic and integrated approach to emancipatory practices rather than a restatement of traditional dichotomies. Emancipatory practice begins with an appreciation of the nature and relevance of inequalities on the lives of diverse social care users. Building a commitment to equality within social care education and practice is an important step in …

Perspectives On Female Sexual Offending In An Irish Context, Sharon Lambert, Sean Hammond Jan 2009

Perspectives On Female Sexual Offending In An Irish Context, Sharon Lambert, Sean Hammond

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

The issue of child sexual abuse perpetrated by women has received little recognition by researchers and when the subject is addressed it is often dismissed as being a rare event. It is only in the last decade that greater interest has been shown in the area of female-perpetrated sexual abuse of children. This is due to the dramatic increase of research into all types of sexual offending and the decrease in the taboo surrounding victimisation. Current literature in the area has largely looked at the development of typologies and establishing prevalence rates. More recently research has focused on ‘barriers’ to …

Faith-Based Assumptions About Performance: Does Church Affiliation Matter For Service Quality And Access?, Anna A. Amirkhanyan, Hyun Joon Kim, Kristina T. Lambright Jan 2009

Faith-Based Assumptions About Performance: Does Church Affiliation Matter For Service Quality And Access?, Anna A. Amirkhanyan, Hyun Joon Kim, Kristina T. Lambright

Public Administration Faculty Scholarship

To date, the common rhetoric and assumptions on the performance of faith-based organizations (FBOs), ironically, appear to be faith based rather than empirically supported: There is a paucity of research evaluating the effectiveness of FBOs that uses sufficiently rigorous methods and multiple measures of organizational performance. This study seeks to inform the debate on the relative effectiveness of FBOs by comparing religiously affiliated and secular nonprofit nursing homes using two distinct but complementary measures of organizational performance: service quality and access for impoverished clients. Using nationally representative panel data on 11,877 church-affiliated and secular nonprofit nursing homes, this study examines …

Power, Pathological Worldviews, And The Strengths Perspective In Social Work, Jill S. Grant, Susan Cadell Jan 2009

Power, Pathological Worldviews, And The Strengths Perspective In Social Work, Jill S. Grant, Susan Cadell

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

This article takes up Blundo’s (2001) assertion in this journal that in order to practice from the strengths perspective, social workers need to alter their “frames.” Expanding on this assertion, we specify a particular frame that requires change: a pathological worldview. Examining the strengths perspective with regard to a Foucauldian analysis of power, we argue that to thoroughly implement the strengths perspective, we need to consider the dividing practices that allow us to maintain power and that reflect a pathological worldview. This article provides considerations for social work practice that will be of interest to practicing social workers and social …
