Male Genital Self-Mutilation With Maggot Infestation In An Intoxicated Individual, Thomas M. Dunn, Vincent Collins, Robert M. House, Philippe Weintraub

SPS Faculty Publications

We present the case of a 55-year-old homeless male who presented with penis and scrotal maggot infestation secondary to genital self-mutilation. The patient gave a history consistent with gender identity disorder and indicated that he was intoxicated during the event. The patient had no history of psychosis. He sought medical attention only after he was no longer welcome on public transportation due to the odor emanating from this infection. Untreated gender identity disorder with alcohol dependence in this case led to a drastic behavior with significant consequences.

The Prospects And Challenges Of Bringing Physical Therapy To The Physically Disabled Population In Developing Countries, Sherrie Flory

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Through a literature review, this capstone will reveal the barriers and current circumstances of physical therapy being distributed for individuals with physical disabilities in developing countries. This research also attempts to identify who the primary physically disabled populations are, if physical therapy can help them, what the consequences of not receiving any physical treatment are, what can be done to improve physical therapy interventions, and what are the prospects to making physical therapy accessible to individuals with disabilities in developing countries.

Assessing The Needs Ofsage-Grouse Local Working Groups: Final Technical Report, L. R. Belton, Douglas B. Jackson-Smith, T. A. Messmer

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Over the last several decades, biologists have grown increasingly concerned about declines in populations of two species of sage-grouse (Centrocercus spp.), a bird whose range covers a vast portion of eleven western U.S. states and two Canadian provinces (Stiver et al. 2006). This chicken-sized bird inhabits sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitats on public and private land across its range. Recent declines in population numbers of this bird across its range have generated concern among landowners and state wildlife officials that the bird may be listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Sage-grouse local working groups (LWGs) have emerged as a centerpiece …

The Organization Of Discipline: From Performance Management To Perversity And Punishment, Joe Soss, Richard Fording, Sanford F. Schram Jan 2009

The Organization Of Discipline: From Performance Management To Perversity And Punishment, Joe Soss, Richard Fording, Sanford F. Schram

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Over the past few decades, poverty governance in the United States has been transformed by the convergence of two powerful reform movements. The first, often referred to as “paternalist,” has shifted poverty governance from an emphasis on rights and opportunities to a stance that is more directive and supervisory in promoting preferred behaviors among the poor. The second, often described as “neoliberal,” has shifted governance away from federal government control toward a system that emphasizes policy devolution, privatization, and performance competition. During this period, public officials have proved remarkably willing to hand policy control over to lower jurisdictions and private …

Support For Youth Workers: Slipping On The Social Curve, John K E Tan

Profiles Of Adolescent Identity Development: Response To An Intervention For Alcohol/Other Drug Problems, Larry F. Forthun, Marilyn J. Montgomery Jan 2009

Profiles Of Adolescent Identity Development: Response To An Intervention For Alcohol/Other Drug Problems, Larry F. Forthun, Marilyn J. Montgomery

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

The purpose of this study was to examine identity development among adolescents participating in an after-school alcohol/other drug (AOD) abuse intervention program (8 females and 12 males, ages 14–17) to identify how identity development was associated with intervention success. To achieve this goal we (a) garnered information from two identity interviews conducted during the first week of the intervention and 6 to 8 weeks later; (b) adopted a qualitative, person-centered analytical strategy to identify identity profiles; and (c) examined the intervention response of the adolescents, as recorded in intervention documents, in the different identity profile groups. Analyses revealed five identity …

A Miscarriage Of Juvenile Justice: A Modern Day Parable Of The Unintended Results Of Bad Lawmaking, Amy Vorenberg Jan 2009

A Miscarriage Of Juvenile Justice: A Modern Day Parable Of The Unintended Results Of Bad Lawmaking, Amy Vorenberg

Law Faculty Scholarship

Sensationalized cases increasingly create the context for public policy discussion. Stories about violent crime are a common feature of the local evening news and their emotional nature can often create the hook politicians need to showcase their “tough on crime” agendas. Often anecdotal and lurid, stories of criminal misdeeds are widely used to convince the public of a need to create or change laws. This article demonstrates the perils of making law by extrapolating from a few random, albeit attention-grabbing, events. Specifically, the article examines the impact of a 1995 change in New Hampshire state law that lowered the age …

Analytical Decision-Making Model For Addressing The Needs Of Allied Health Students With Disabilities, Susan Roush, Nancy Sharby Jan 2009

Analytical Decision-Making Model For Addressing The Needs Of Allied Health Students With Disabilities, Susan Roush, Nancy Sharby

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

The purposes of this article are to (1) review the literature on students with disabilities (SWD) in higher education with a particular focus on allied health and related professions, and (2) propose an analytical decision-making model for assessing students' needs and providing reasonable accommodations in allied health education. Increasing numbers of SWD are entering higher education, but the rate of success for these students is lower than the rate for their nondisabled peers. A multitude of factors impact SWD, including the direct effects of the disabilities on learning and performing essential functions, academic and clinical faculty knowledge of the impact …
