Three Essays On Environmental Issues Associated With Broiler Production In Louisiana, Nirmala Adhikari Devkota Jan 2009

Three Essays On Environmental Issues Associated With Broiler Production In Louisiana, Nirmala Adhikari Devkota

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The increasing trends of integrated and concentrated broiler production results in a serious threat to environment through excessive litter production and lack of its proper disposal. Production concentration in limited area is a major source of surface as well as ground water pollution. Nonpoint source pollution from broiler litter applied on land remains a major concern in Louisiana and elsewhere in Southeastern USA. This study examines alternative approaches to reduce pollution originating from broiler production. First, I evaluate why some producers adopt BMP faster than others and what kind of factors affect the time to adoption decision. The duration model …

Characterization Of Porcine Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells, Kellie J. Williams Jan 2009

Characterization Of Porcine Adipose Tissue-Derived Stem Cells, Kellie J. Williams

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Nuclear transfer (NT) results in low success rates and research has reported problems with the welfare of cloned animals produced. Evidence suggests the use of a less differentiated donor cell, such as a stem cell, may lead to an increase in the efficiency of the NT procedure. Stem cell characteristics must be clearly defined in order to isolate, identify and optimally culture potential donor cells. Stem cell characteristics such as self-renewal and differentiation have not been identified in stem cells from porcine adipose tissue, an easily attainable tissue resource. The phenotypic profile of cell surface proteins and chromosomal stability of …

Granular Activated Carbon Sorption As A Load Equalization Mechanism In Operation Of Air Pollution Control Devices, Marilou Montevirgen Nabatilan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Transient periods of unsteady loading pose a challenge in design and operation of bioreactors for air pollution control. As a potential means of overcoming some of these challenges, a systematic study of granular activated carbon (GAC) sorption was conducted to further evaluate its potential as a load equalization mechanism for unsteady loading of volatile organic carbons (VOCs). GAC columns were experimentally tested under dynamic loading conditions involving variations in contaminant concentrations, gas flow rates, and relative humidity. Toluene was used as model VOC, and BPL 4x6 mesh GAC was used as a model adsorbent. The research was divided into four …

Cross-Disciplinary Approaches For Developing Serious Games In Higher Education: Frameworks For Food Safety And Environmental Health Education, Pauline Rooney, K.C. O'Rourke, Greg Burke, Brian Mac Namee, Claudia Igbrude

Conference papers

While some educators have adopted commercial off the-shelf games for use in the classroom, such games may not always meet the individual requirements of lecturers whose courses are tied to specific learning utcomes. An alternative is to capitalise on in-house expertise in Higher Education and create serious games through cross-disciplinary team projects. This paper outlines such a project within one Higher Education institution. It describes synergies created across disciplines as a result of the collaboration on game design and implementation. It looks at tensions generated between the pedagogical requirements (of lecturers), entertainment objectives (of games designers) and technical excellence (sought …

Compensating For Expressiveness In Queries To A Content Based Music Information Retrieval System, Bryan Duggan, Brendan O'Shea, Mikel Gainza, Padraig Cunningham

Conference papers

MATT2 is a content based music information retrieval system adapted to the characteristics of traditional Irish dance music. MATT2 compensates for expressive artefacts commonly employed by traditional musicians. Specifically these are ornamentation, "the long note", reversing and phrasing. In this paper we describe the main components of MATT2 and present an experiment where we demonstrate that using this higher level knowledge of melodic similarity in traditional Irish dance music results in a significant improvement in annotation accuracy over standard approaches from the MIR literature.

The Murrow Tradition: What Was It, And Does It Still Live?, Raluca Cozma Jan 2009

The Murrow Tradition: What Was It, And Does It Still Live?, Raluca Cozma

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the differences in the quality of radio foreign news and foreign correspondents between CBS during World War II and NPR during the Iraq War II. Triangulating quantitative and qualitative methods (content analysis, historical research, and in-depth interviews), this study proposes a model of quality foreign news to help determine what the Murrow tradition means. The model is then used to test if that celebrated tradition lives on in a non-commercial setting at NPR. The two-pronged model pulls together theories of mass communication and historical accounts to assess (1) the quality of the foreign correspondents at the two …

Temperature Impact On Nitrification And Bacterial Growth Kinetics In Acclimating Recirculating Aquaculture Systems Biofilters, Milton Maada-Gomoh Saidu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project assessed short-term temperature effects on total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) utilization rates in a batch laboratory-scale recirculating system. The tank system was designed for experiments on short term steady state and diurnal temperatures. A set of numerical models was developed to simulate observed results. The performance of the biofilters was determined with three tank replicates at fixed temperatures of 13, 20 and 300C; and at diurnal transient (sinusoidal) temperature regimes of (20 ± 30C; 30 ± 30C). Ammonia utilization rates and biofilter performance for beads acclimated at different temperatures regimes separated and mixed were also determined. Total ammonia utilization …

Gathering Datasets For Activity Identification, Lorcan Coyle, Juan Ye, Susan Mckeever, Stephen Knox, Mathew Staelber, Simon Dobson, Paddy Nixon Jan 2009

Gathering Datasets For Activity Identification, Lorcan Coyle, Juan Ye, Susan Mckeever, Stephen Knox, Mathew Staelber, Simon Dobson, Paddy Nixon

Conference papers

The area of activity identification is maturing well in the HCI and ubiquitous computing fields. However, although algorithm development is proceedings well, without publicly available datasets on which to compare results it is difficult to consolidate the disparate work being done. This problem exists because realistic datasets describing human activity are difficult and expensive to gather and because there are significant barriers to releasing the data once gathered. We review positive recent development with the release of two high-quality datasets. From our experiences using these datasets we list some recommendations for the gathering and release of future datasets. Finally, we …

An Integrated Agent-Based Microsimulation Model For Hurricane Evacuation In New Orleans, Wei Liang Jan 2009

An Integrated Agent-Based Microsimulation Model For Hurricane Evacuation In New Orleans, Wei Liang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Mass evacuation of urban areas due to hurricanes is a critical problem that requires extensive basic and applied research. Knowing the accurate evacuation time needed for the entire region in advance such that the evacuation order can be issued on a timely basis is crucial for the officials. Microsimulation modeling, which focuses on the characteristics of individual motorists and travel behavior, has been used widely in traffic simulation as it can lead to the most accurate result. However, because detailed driver response modeling and path processing must be incorporated, vehicle-based microscopic models have always been used only to simulate small …

Inside The Red Box: North Korea's Post-Totalitarian Politcs, Patrick Mceachern Jan 2009

Inside The Red Box: North Korea's Post-Totalitarian Politcs, Patrick Mceachern

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a radically new understanding of North Korean politics under Kim Jong Il and carefully tests this theoretical proposition. Current models describe North Korea as some form of a highly centralized state: totalitarian, personalistic, or corporatist. By contrast, I argue that these monolithic ideal types fail to capture the institutional pluralism that helps distinguish the younger Kim’s rein from his father’s. While Kim Il Sung’s rule can be described as totalitarian, Kim Jong Il governs through a more decentralized post-totalitarian, institutionally plural state. Kim Jong Il’s government is highly centralized, but it is less centralized than his father’s. …

An Uncertainty-Based Approach To The Total Maximum Daily Load Development, Abhijit Patil Jan 2009

An Uncertainty-Based Approach To The Total Maximum Daily Load Development, Abhijit Patil

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

A Bayesian-updating approach is developed to the estimation of the total uncertainty-based Margin of Safety (MOS) for Total Maximum Daily Load calculations using the watershed modeling tool HSPF. In order to determine the prior, likelihood, and posterior distributions of uncertainties involved in Bayesian approach, various probability density functions are derived. The temperature measurement induced uncertainty in dissolved oxygen simulation is found to be normally distributed. The temporal scale uncertainty in weather data decreases with decreasing temporal resolution. The temporal-scale uncertainties in the rainfall and temperature data follow a Weibull and general extreme value distributions, respectively. The spatial-resolution uncertainty in simulated …

U.S. Public Diplomacy Toward Iran: Structures, Actors, And Policy Communities, Foad Izadi Jan 2009

U.S. Public Diplomacy Toward Iran: Structures, Actors, And Policy Communities, Foad Izadi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an in depth study of the structures, actors, and policy communities associated with U.S. public diplomacy toward Iran. Since 2006, the U.S. government has spent more than $200 million for its Iran-related public diplomacy via State Department "democracy promotion" programs, National Endowment for Democracy, and the Broadcasting Board of Governors. These initiatives promoted regime change in Iran, ignoring a substantial majority of Iran’s population opposed to U.S.-sponsored interventions. The study finds U.S. public diplomacy as it relates to Iran fits with the two-way asymmetrical model of public relations. The dissertation identifies 182 individuals who participated in the …

Coordinating Cross-Border Bankruptcy: How Territorialism Saves Universalism, Edward Adams, Jason Fincke Jan 2009

Coordinating Cross-Border Bankruptcy: How Territorialism Saves Universalism, Edward Adams, Jason Fincke

Articles

This article explores the difficulties of coordinating cross-border bankruptcies. These difficulties arise from the lack of a binding set of uniform international rules, forcing multinational businesses to look to domestic laws for guidance. The problem is that without coordinated, concurrent insolvency proceedings, an effective reorganization of a multinational corporation is impossible because a multitude of separate judgments ultimately leads to the dismemberment of a debtor's estate. To address this challenge, an increasing number of countries – including the United States and several European countries such as Germany, Poland, Romania, Spain, and the United Kingdom – have enacted a Model Law on …

Gendering The Declaration, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin Jan 2009

Gendering The Declaration, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin

Articles

As the Universal Declaration on Human Rights celebrates its sixtieth anniversary this article examines the gendered foundations of the document. Drawing on its drafting history the article concludes that despite considerable advances contained within it the document has many limitations. Over the years, greater attention has been focused on the ways in which the Universal Declaration has advanced claims for gender equality. As the document's influence and status have magnified, its gendered boundaries are in plainer sight. Moreover, as feminists have systematically exposed the entrenched biases of international law, the Universal Declaration does not emerge from scrutiny unscathed. This article …

Empirical Legal Studies Before 1940: A Bibliographic Essay, Herbert M. Kritzer Jan 2009

Empirical Legal Studies Before 1940: A Bibliographic Essay, Herbert M. Kritzer

Articles

The modern empirical legal studies movement has well-known antecedents in the law and society and law and economics traditions of the latter half of the 20th century. Less well known is the body of empirical research on legal phenomena from the period prior to World War II. This paper is an extensive bibliographic essay that surveys the English language empirical legal research from approximately 1940 and earlier. The essay is arranged around the themes in the research: criminal justice, civil justice (general studies of civil litigation, auto accident litigation and compensation, divorce, small claims, jurisdiction and procedure, civil juries), debt …
