Lessons From Cideci Las Casas : The Potential For Non-Directive Learning Spaces In The United States, Gideon Mausner

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The purpose of my project was to observe the informal, non-directive and communal learning space of CIdeCI Las Casas in San Cristobal, Chiapas and consider its potential applications in the United States of America. The following paper presents the results of this project in five sections. In the first section I examine the meaning of modern education and its primary vessel, the school. In the second section I give a detailed background of CIdeCI: its history and purpose and its place within the cultural and political realities of Chiapas. In the third section I share my experiences and observations from …

White-Tailed Deer Attacking Humans During The Fawning Season: A Unique Human–Wildlife Conflict On A University Campus, Ryan D. Hubbard, Clayton K. Nielsen Apr 2009

White-Tailed Deer Attacking Humans During The Fawning Season: A Unique Human–Wildlife Conflict On A University Campus, Ryan D. Hubbard, Clayton K. Nielsen

Human–Wildlife Interactions

Human–wildlife conflicts associated with suburban white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations have increased in the last 20 years. Primary threats to human health and safety associated with overabundant deer populations include deer–vehicle collisions, attacks on humans, disease, and damage to native and ornamental vegetation. During the fawning seasons (May–June) of 2005 and 2006, 13 confirmed incidences of white-tailed deer attacking humans occurred on the campus of Southern Illinois University–Carbondale. To our knowledge, no report exists that documents free-ranging does attacking humans during the fawning season. The attacks occurred at multiple locations on campus, with injuries to humans, including minor …

The Norfolk Hoax: Fear, Social Violence And Ethnicity At The Norfolk Navy Yard During The Strike Of 1877, John Douglas Forrest Apr 2009

The Norfolk Hoax: Fear, Social Violence And Ethnicity At The Norfolk Navy Yard During The Strike Of 1877, John Douglas Forrest

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the contributing causes why the command of the Norfolk Navy Yard feared a labor uprising or riot in the surrounding community of Portsmouth, Virginia in July 1877. Racial, class and ethnic tensions heightened to the point that on the morning of July 25, 1877, unknown agents distributed pamphlets around the city, which appealed to workers at the Navy Yard. A culture of social violence was prevalent during Norfolk and Portsmouth's post-Civil War existence. The ground-level view offered by this thesis is of the intense fear that spread across the country in 1877 as a result of severe …

A Strategic Planning Decision Support Methodology In Emergency Department Preparedness For Mass Casualty Events, Adrian Spencer Benson Apr 2009

A Strategic Planning Decision Support Methodology In Emergency Department Preparedness For Mass Casualty Events, Adrian Spencer Benson

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study's objective is to design a strategic planning decision support methodology to improve Emergency Department (ED) preparedness for Mass Casualty Events (MCEs). This effort will enable hospital and medical strategic planners to evaluate alternatives which improve ED capacity. This comparative analysis illuminates the relative performance of alternatives involving three improvement scenarios for an ED, involving various increases in trauma bay, examination room, radiology, surgery, and recovery/observation study capacities. To illustrate this decision methodology, a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) was implemented in Arena, and used a mixture of Subject Matter Expert (SME) estimates and appropriate notional data. The design of …

Deer Guards And Bump Gates For Excluding White-Tailed Deer From Fenced Resources, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Nathan W. Seward, Michael J. Lavelle, Justin W. Fischer, Gregaory E. Phillips Apr 2009

Deer Guards And Bump Gates For Excluding White-Tailed Deer From Fenced Resources, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Nathan W. Seward, Michael J. Lavelle, Justin W. Fischer, Gregaory E. Phillips

Human–Wildlife Interactions

White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) causing damage is a reoccurring theme in the realm of wildlife damage management, especially regarding human safety, disease transmission, and agricultural losses. Fences often are the only reliable long-term nonlethal means of controlling deer damage. The efficacy of fences, however, relies on their weakest link: human-operated gates. Although not overly time-consuming, the act of closing a gate appears to be a burden to individuals, resulting in open-access to an otherwise protected resource. We examined the efficacy of 2 alternatives to traditional gates to evaluate their potential to be used for excluding or containing deer. …

Sorna In The Eighth Circuit, Daniel J. Hassing Mar 2009

Sorna In The Eighth Circuit, Daniel J. Hassing

Nebraska Law Bulletin (Selected Issues)

Child exploitation and other sexual crimes are some of the most perverse and pervasive crimes in the United States. Cases such as those involving Elizabeth Smart and Jessica Lunsford grab headlines and demonstrate the depravity of some criminals. In an effort to combat such offenders, Congress enacted the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006. Title I of the Act is called the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA).

In the past year, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals has decided two cases involving challenges to SORNA. Both cases involved criminal defendants who argued, among other things, …

A Tale Of Two Cities: Lessons Learned From New Orleans To The District Of Columbia For The Protection Of Vulnerable Populations From The Consequences Of Disaster, Laurie A. Morin

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

Like Paris before the French Revolution, New Orleans is a city of extremes. Visitors from around the world visit "the Big Easy" to sip chicory coffee and eat beignets in the French Quarter, listen to some of the country's best music at the jazz festival, and join one of the world's most famous parties during Mardi Gras. When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in August 2005, it exposed the soft underbelly of New Orleans-the other side of the city where thousands of people, mostly African Americans, live in pockets of concentrated poverty unable to escape the consequences of decades of …
