The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Services In Multi-Service Agencies, Debra Patterson
The Effectiveness Of Sexual Assault Services In Multi-Service Agencies, Debra Patterson
Social Work Faculty Publications
Sexual assault is a pervasive social problem with 18% of women and 3% of men experiencing a completed or attempted assault during their lifetime. More than half of victimizations occur before the survivor reaches the age of eighteen (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Research also shows that twothirds of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the survivor, such as an acquaintance, friend or intimate partner. In fact, approximately 15% of sexual assaults are committed by an intimate partner. Many sexual assault survivors experience multiple negative outcomes such as psychological distress, physical health problems, and difficulties in life functioning (Gutner, …

The purpose of the proposed action is to authorize SWDC to build and operate facilities to deliver water to the Park City/Snyderville Basin area (Figure 1.2). The need for the proposed action is a growing demand for water in the Park City/Snyderville Basin area due to population growth and increased development of recreation facilities and vacation homes.

The Built Environment, Neighborhood Safety, And Physical Activity Among Low Income Children, Jessica Greene, Debbie Daniel
TREC Final Reports
There is a growing body of evidence that environmental factors are related to physical activity and active modes of transportation. There is a separate body of research that links neighborhood safety to physical activity. This study used a cross sectional telephone survey of 801 parents/guardians of low income children in Florida to bridge these literatures and examine the independent relationship of the built environment and neighborhood safety on childrens' physical activity.
In multivariate regression models we find that neighborhood safety is a more consistent predictor of low income childrens' physical activity. In neighborhoods where parents reported that there was a …

Landmines and unexploded ordnances (UXO) are long-term public health problems in both conflict and post-conflict countries. Consequences from landmines and UXO incidents result in deaths, injuries, subsequent disabilities, and other socioeconomic burdens from the investments in healthcare resources (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1997). In 2005, the total number of landmine and UXO casualties in the world was 7,328, in which 24 percent were killed. Since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975, 38,849 people have been killed in Vietnam alone, and 65,852 have been injured. More than thirty years after the war, Vietnam continues to suffer consequences, …

Proportionality is conspicuously absent from the legal framework for immigration sanctions. Immigration Law relies on one sanctiondeportation- as the ubiquitous penalty for any immigration violation. Neither the gravity of the violation nor the harm that results bears on whether deportation is the consequence for an immigration violation. Immigration Law stands alone in the legal landscape in this respect. Criminal Law incorporates proportionality when imposing graduated punishment based on the gravity of the offense; contract and tort Law provide for damages that are graduated based on the harm to others or to society. This Article represents the first and fundamental step …

This study, which received no outside funding from any organization, analyzed the complete 2007‐2008 coverage of ACORN by 15 major news media organizations, and the narrative frames of their 647 stories during that period. The news media analyzed include the four the highest circulation national newspapers—USA Today, New York Times, Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal—and an analysis of the transcripts of reports from leading broadcast news organizations: ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, National Public Radio (NPR), and NewsHour with Jim Lehrer (PBS). We also analyzed stories from three local newspapers …

What Democracy For Afghanistan? An Analysis Utilizing Established Norms And Five Non-Western Case Studies, Charles L. Barry, Samuel R. Greene
What Democracy For Afghanistan? An Analysis Utilizing Established Norms And Five Non-Western Case Studies, Charles L. Barry, Samuel R. Greene
Defense and Technology Papers
This paper looks at democratic governance and what might be expected to take root in a society such as Afghanistan, shedding light on what is necessary, as a minimum, for democracy to become established. Suggesting replacements for goals that may be simply unattainable, such as an Afghan democracy held to an unrealistic Jeffersonian standard, it aims to impart a sense of what can be accomplished before international political will expires.

Creating And Sustaining Successful Mixed-Income Communities: Conceptualizing The Role Of Schools, Mark L. Joseph, Jessica Feldman
Faculty Scholarship
This article examines the theory and evidence behind the increased policy and scholarly interest in the role that schools might play in promoting neighborhood revitalization, focuses on the extent to which schools might be a key component in the growing efforts across the country to address urban poverty by creating and sustaining mixed-income neighborhoods, identifies five channels through which investment in high-quality public schools might help facilitate the types of neighborhood- and individual-level outcomes sought through mixed-income development, explores the theoretical arguments behind these pathways, and draws on research to assess the potential value of each. The article concludes that …

Analysis And Modeling Of Motor Vehicle Crashes Involving Air Force Military Personnel, Antonios Markopoulos
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this thesis was to improve the data analysis of Motor Vehicle Crashes (MVCs). This thesis employed the Air Force Safety Center (AFSC) data, collected over 20 years, of MVCs in which US Air Force (USAF) military personnel are involved when off duty and off base. Categorical Data Analysis and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were applied to identify risk factors related to MVCs and influence the severity of injuries and those factors associated with the alcohol consumption before driving, and affect the number of lost workdays resulting from MVCs. Categorical Data Analysis showed that male USAF members …

Introduction To The Symposium On The Model Penal Code's Sentencing Proposals, Christopher Slobogin
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Begun in the 1950s, the drafting of the Model Penal Code (the Code) differed from the typical American Law Institute (AL) "restatement" of the law project because it was an explicit attempt to provide a model statute that would advance doctrine and practice rather than merely describe it. Scores of lawyers, judges, academics and policymakers actively participated in the process of devising the Code. Their efforts paid off. As Gerard Lynch wrote in 1998, "[t]he Model Penal Code is among the most successful academic law reform projects ever attempted.", During the 1960s and 1970s, well over half the states revamped …
