The Impact Of The Ferst Foundation For Childhood Literacy On The Home Literacy Environment, Gina B. Thomason Oct 2009

The Impact Of The Ferst Foundation For Childhood Literacy On The Home Literacy Environment, Gina B. Thomason

Georgia Educational Researcher

This study examined if, among families whose children were enrolled in the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy, there was a relationship between the home literacy environment, measured by a scale survey, and the length of time enrolled in the program. Participants were a stratified random sampling from the population of parents in the State of Georgia whose children were enrolled in the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy program. Using a pilot-tested original survey instrument, 2,100 survey packets were mailed to participants. Valid returned surveys totaled 1,082. Pearson correlation revealed a correlation of positive direction but of small strength in the …

Sensing Learner Interest Through Eye Tracking, Haolin Wei, Arthir-Nicolae Moldovan, Cristina Muntean Oct 2009

Sensing Learner Interest Through Eye Tracking, Haolin Wei, Arthir-Nicolae Moldovan, Cristina Muntean

9th. IT & T Conference

Due to the rapidly growing of the amount of information, a stronger need emerges for efficient and flexible strategies for personalisation of the educational content. E-learning systems are very helpful for learners, however, people differ in knowledge level, learning styles and may seek for different information when they access web based e-learning systems. Therefore, content adapted to the user’s needs should be supported by the e-learning systems. In this paper we introduce a new e-learning environment that makes use of eye tracking mechanism to follow learner interest in certain topics and to perform content personalisation. The framework of the e-learning …

Establishing A Connection Between Quality Of Life And Pre-Academic Instruction For Students With Profound Multiple Disabilities, Jonna L. Bobzien Oct 2009

Establishing A Connection Between Quality Of Life And Pre-Academic Instruction For Students With Profound Multiple Disabilities, Jonna L. Bobzien

Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

The field of special education has begun to concentrate its efforts on developing objectives and procedural strategies that promote a positive quality of life for students with profound multiple disabilities, while determining which educational strategies are the most appropriate. A multi-element design was used to compare the effects of two educational conditions, pre-academic skills instruction and functional life skills instruction, on the quality of life indicators of four students with profound multiple disabilities. Results indicated that all four students demonstrated a greater number of happiness indicators while receiving pre-academic instruction. Implications for current educational practices are addressed and directions for …

Management And Disaster, Eugene Soraghan Oct 2009

Management And Disaster, Eugene Soraghan

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this paper is to determine the effect management has on disaster response and recovery. Specifically, the investigation will determine what management model or methodology seems to produce the greatest effect when preparing for, reacting to, and recovering from a disaster. Any firm with a managerial hierarchy utilizes some methodology or model to organize and oversee its personnel and operations, even if this model may not be consciously recognized by the organization, escape a direct association with a theory, or lack a proper name. While these models may prove effective at internal regulation and profit realization, they consistently …

Review [Of Peter Rawlings' Henry James And The Abuse Of The Past], Sarah Wadsworth Oct 2009

Review [Of Peter Rawlings' Henry James And The Abuse Of The Past], Sarah Wadsworth

English Faculty Research and Publications

[...] the "abuse of the past" becomes in James's hands "an art of fiction and the framework of an autobiography" (67-68). According to Rawlings, "Henry James's late fiction specializes in constructing, within the volatile framework of philosophies of time then current, decadent mutations of America's vanishing dreamers, characters arrested . . . by the forlorn realization that 'we shall never be again as we were!'" (141-42).

A New Look At Training Motivation: A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Differential And Incremental Validity, Kristina N. Bauer Oct 2009

A New Look At Training Motivation: A Meta-Analytic Investigation Of Differential And Incremental Validity, Kristina N. Bauer

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The extant training and educational research has not been consistent in the way motivation is measured in the context of training. Prior research has examined different types of motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation, motivation to leam, motivation to transfer, expectancy motivation, and task value) and different timings of measurement (i.e., pretraining, during, and post-training). Accordingly, the present meta-analysis sought to elucidate the relationships between training motivation and training outcomes via three contributions: (I) examining differential relationships with four training outcomes; (2) assessing incremental validity over and above each other to the prediction of these training outcomes; and (3) investigating whether the …

Individuals And Contex00tual Factors: An Interactionist Approach To Understanding Self-Development, Gregory Paul Letller Oct 2009

Individuals And Contex00tual Factors: An Interactionist Approach To Understanding Self-Development, Gregory Paul Letller

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

While the extant research has identified several individual and contextual factors influential on an employee's quantity of self-development participation, no prior research has examined potential multiplicative effects among these factors. The current study investigated person-situation interactions among five individual factors ( e.g., self-efficacy for self-development, learning goal orientation, and openness to experience) and the contextual factors of organizational and supervisor support ( combined to reflect overall work support). This study also sought to investigate the influence of proactive personality on self-development participation, a promising individual difference that has received little attention in the self-development literature. Using data collected from 136 …

The Early Development Of Gender Differences, Matthew H. Mcintyre, Carolyn P. Edwards Oct 2009

The Early Development Of Gender Differences, Matthew H. Mcintyre, Carolyn P. Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article reviews findings from anthropology, psychology, and other disciplines about the role of biological factors in the development of sex differences in human behavior, including biological theories, the developmental course of sex differences, and the interaction of biological and cultural gendering processes at different ages. Current evidence suggests that major biological influences on individual differences in human gender, to the extent that they exist, operate primarily in early development, during and especially prior to puberty. Biological effects are likely to be mediated by relatively simple processes, like temperament, which are then elaborated through social interactions (as with mother and …

The Receptor Mechanisms Underlying The Disruptive Effects Of Haloperidol And Clozapine On Rat Maternal Behavior: A Double Dissociation Between Dopamine D2 And 5-Ht2a/2c Receptors, Changjiu Zhao, Ming Li Oct 2009

The Receptor Mechanisms Underlying The Disruptive Effects Of Haloperidol And Clozapine On Rat Maternal Behavior: A Double Dissociation Between Dopamine D2 And 5-Ht2a/2c Receptors, Changjiu Zhao, Ming Li

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Many antipsychotic drugs disrupt active components of maternal behavior such as pup approach, pup retrieval and nest building at clinically relevant doses in postpartum female rats. However, the neurochemical mechanisms underlying such a disruptive effect remain to be determined. This study examined the neurochemical mechanisms that mediate the disruptive effects of haloperidol (a typical antipsychotic) and clozapine (an atypical antipsychotic) on rat maternal behavior. Postpartum rats were administered with haloperidol (0.2 mg/kg, sc) or clozapine (10.0 mg/kg, sc) together with either vehicle (saline or water), quinpirole (a selective dopamine D2/D3 agonist, 0.5 or 1.0 mg/kg, sc), or …

Redefining The Dust Bowl Region Via Popular Perception And Geotechnology, Jess C. Porter, G. Allen Finchum

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

The Dust Bowl is a historical vernacular region that has been delimited by a diverse group of academics, literary authors, and popular cultural voices. However, the general public’s perception of the Dust Bowl region has not been mapped and analyzed. This research queried residents of 93 Great Plains counties in order to ascertain their perceptions and knowledge of the vernacular Dust Bowl region. Analysis of the responses via the application of geographic information system mapping reveals striking differences between respondents of varying age and place of residence. Findings suggest that spatial understanding of the Dust Bowl phenomena is eroding among …

Rescuing The Hero: The Ramifications Of Expanding The Duty To Rescue On Society And The Law, Amelia H. Ashton Oct 2009

Rescuing The Hero: The Ramifications Of Expanding The Duty To Rescue On Society And The Law, Amelia H. Ashton

Duke Law Journal

The ongoing debate about the legal duty to rescue another person in peril is fraught with a familiar tension. On one side stands the traditional and distinctly American determination that freedom from such a duty is essential, that the technical rules of tort law and self-preservation instincts disdain such a requirement, and that the postulates of religion and morality are sure to fill in any legal gaps. On the other, a more recent humanitarian perspective-seen in revisions to the Restatement, case law, and some state statutes-advocates for requiring easy rescue, positing that religiously inspired morality and public good-doing are unlikely, …

When Insiders Become Outsiders: Parental Objections To Public School Sex Education Programs, Emily J. Brown Oct 2009

When Insiders Become Outsiders: Parental Objections To Public School Sex Education Programs, Emily J. Brown

Duke Law Journal

This Note argues that parents' fundamental right to direct their children's moral and educational upbringing includes the right to exempt their children from objectionable sex education programs in public schools. Schools usurp parents' fundamental rights when they unilaterally introduce children to topics of human sexuality without parental notice or permission. Alleged violations of these rights merit strict scrutiny review from courts. When parents' objections are confined to discrete, tangible events, parents are constitutionally entitled to exempt their children from objectionable activities. The efficacy of this constitutional relief is more limited, however, when parental objections are pervasive and unassociated with a …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Mobile devices used in educational settings are usually employed within a collaborative learning activity in which learning takes place in the form of social interactions between team members while performing a shared task. We introduce MobiTOP (Mobile Tagging of Objects and People), a geospatial digital library system which allows users to contribute and share multimedia annotations via mobile devices. A key feature of MobiTOP that is well suited for collaborative learning is that annotations are hierarchical, allowing annotations to be annotated by other users to an arbitrary depth. A group of student-teachers involved in an inquiry-based learning activity in geography …
