Universal Design, Education And Technology, Ciaran O'Leary, Damian Gordon Oct 2009

Universal Design, Education And Technology, Ciaran O'Leary, Damian Gordon

9th. IT & T Conference

Universal Design is an approach to design which insists upon the consideration of users with diverse levels of ability. Rather than representing a specialist approach to design, it is recognised that Universal Design results in a better design for all. Furthermore, by isolating design for disability as an independent topic in education, or ignoring it altogether, educators create an exclusionist perception of the role and place of individuals with disability in modern society. Modern education programmes which teach design skills are enhanced in quality by mainstreaming Universal Design as a core topic, permeating all that surrounds it. This paper describes …

Stop The Killing: Potential Courtroom Use Of A Questionnaire That Predicts The Likelihood That A Victim Of Intimate Partner Violence Will Be Murdered By Her Partner, Amanda Hitt, Lynn Mclain Oct 2009

Stop The Killing: Potential Courtroom Use Of A Questionnaire That Predicts The Likelihood That A Victim Of Intimate Partner Violence Will Be Murdered By Her Partner, Amanda Hitt, Lynn Mclain

All Faculty Scholarship

Judges in domestic cases often underestimate the risk to a mother and her children that an angry and abusive father or other intimate partner poses. In a recent Maryland case, for example, two judges refused to deny a father visitation or require that visitation be supervised, despite the fact that the father had threatened suicide. During the father’s unsupervised visitation, he drowned all three of his children, then attempted to kill himself.

The Danger Assessment tool (the D.A.) developed by a Johns Hopkins Nursing professor and validated by herself and other social scientists shows how much the father’s thoughts of …

Jubal Early’S Trains: The Battle Of Lynchburg In Historical Memory, John G. Marks Oct 2009

Jubal Early’S Trains: The Battle Of Lynchburg In Historical Memory, John G. Marks

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

On June 18, 1901, Charles Minor Blackford, brother of Battle of Lynchburg veteran Eugene Blackford, made a speech commemorating the thirty-five year anniversary of the Lynchburg Campaign. In the Battle of Lynchburg, as a part of the wider Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1864, General Jubal Early and the Confederate force defended the city from General David Hunter and the Union in a two-day engagement, marked mostly by skirmishing. Blackford stated in this speech that, “During the night of the 17th, a yard engine, with box cars attached, was run up and down the Southside Railroad, making as much noise as …

Donnie Darko And The Messianic Motif, Kevin V. Dodd Oct 2009

Donnie Darko And The Messianic Motif, Kevin V. Dodd

Journal of Religion & Film

Savior or deliverer movies are a staple in today’s theaters. Often they are action/adventure films where they tend to substitute action for character development. In the first background section I will use an ancient Hindu epic to demonstrate that this is by no means novel. But there have also been richer films that are psychologically, religiously, and often politically, savvy. Many have been examined in this journal, including Cool Hand Luke, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and the highly provocative Breaking the Waves. The last especially points to a particular category of savior film, the Messianic, …

Psychological Impact Of Negotiating Two Cultures: Latino Coping And Self-Esteem, Lucas Torres, David Rollock

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Among 96 Latino adults, active coping accounted for variance in global self-esteem beyond that of biculturalism and sociodemographic indicators. The findings highlight the importance of accounting for the way Latino adults approach negotiating multiple cultural contexts. Extending acculturation research to integrate competence-based formulations provides comprehensive information regarding cultural adaptation.

Teacher Educators Embrace Philosophy: Reflections On A New Way Of Looking At Preparing Pre-Service Teachers, Amanda Mergler, Elizabeth Curtis, Rebecca Spooner-Lane Oct 2009

Teacher Educators Embrace Philosophy: Reflections On A New Way Of Looking At Preparing Pre-Service Teachers, Amanda Mergler, Elizabeth Curtis, Rebecca Spooner-Lane

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Over the last decade in Australia, the role of the teacher has changed. Teachers are now expected to model and foster in their students a wide range of skills such as critical thinking, self-regulated learning, knowledge of self and others and lifelong learning. These changes are having a significant impact on the design of pre-service teacher education programmes, with university educators re-evaluating the teacher training curriculum and embedded pedagogical processes in order to consider how they might develop these skills in pre-service teachers. One approach is to consider the processes and practices inherent in philosophical inquiry. This paper reports on …

The Attractors Of Teaching Biology: A Perspective From A Turkish Context, Ahmet Kilinc, Ahmet Mahiroglu Oct 2009

The Attractors Of Teaching Biology: A Perspective From A Turkish Context, Ahmet Kilinc, Ahmet Mahiroglu

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Because the teaching occupation plays a crucial role in a country’s development, policymakers and teacher recruitment units all around the world strive to understand how to attract individuals to this profession. However, research regarding the attractors of teaching has been conducted almost entirely in developed countries and has not focused on particular subject areas to be taught. In addition, only limited lists of attractors have been used. Accordingly, the main purpose of this study was to examine what attractors influence people who choose teaching biology as a career, and what about the Turkish culture has caused people to make this …

Indicators Of Late Emerging Reading-Accuracy Difficulties In Australian Schools, Susan A. Galletly, Bruce Allen Knight, John Dekkers, Tracey A. Galletly Oct 2009

Indicators Of Late Emerging Reading-Accuracy Difficulties In Australian Schools, Susan A. Galletly, Bruce Allen Knight, John Dekkers, Tracey A. Galletly

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Late-emerging reading-accuracy difficulties are those found present in older students not showing reading-accuracy difficulties when tested in earlier years (Leach, Scarborough and Rescorla, 2003). This paper discusses the constructs of reading-accuracy and late-emerging reading-accuracy difficulties. It then discusses data from a cross-sectional study of Australian readers from Years 1 to 8, which suggests a likelihood of late-emerging reading-accuracy difficulties being present in Australian readers. Results showed a steady increase in the proportion of low achievers (SS<90), and a higher number of boys than girls being low achievers. The results provide evidence for the importance of reading-accuracy screening of students in primary and middle school years, and for reading instruction at all year levels to be focussed where needed on reading accuracy.

How Can Preservice Teachers Be Measured Against Advocated Professional Teaching Standards?, Peter Hudson Oct 2009

How Can Preservice Teachers Be Measured Against Advocated Professional Teaching Standards?, Peter Hudson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Australia has had many inquiries into teaching and teacher education over the last decade. Standards for teaching have been produced by national education systems with many state systems following suit. The Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) advocates ten professional teaching standards for teachers and preservice teachers. How can preservice teachers be measured against advocated professional standards? This study investigated 106 second-year preservice teachers’ perceptions of their development against the QCT standards. A pretest-posttest survey instrument was developed based on the QCT standards and administered to these preservice teachers before and after their science education coursework. Percentages, ANOVAs and t-tests were …

Expanding Liability For Negligence Per Se, Ariel Porat Oct 2009

Expanding Liability For Negligence Per Se, Ariel Porat

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

In order to succeed in a tort suit under negligence per se, a victim must be of the class of persons protected by the statute and his injury must be of the type that the statute was intended to prevent. Referring to them as "the limiting liability conditions", this Article calls for a diminishment of their role in determining liability in torts. It is argued that whenever non-compliance with a statutory provision increases risks to the class of persons the victim belongs to or of the type of injury the victim suffered and those risks are foreseeable, there is a …
