'Making Whoopee'? : An Exploration Of Understandings And Responses Around Women's Alcohol Use, Patricia Staddon Jan 2009

'Making Whoopee'? : An Exploration Of Understandings And Responses Around Women's Alcohol Use, Patricia Staddon

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

In this thesis, I explore the different meanings women's drinking may have for them, and the ways in which these may differ from those of the public, the medical profession, and alcohol treatment providers. I consider the sociological factors involved, such as marginalisation by medical diagnosis as a method of social control, involving particularly the disempowerment of women (Ettorre 1997). I challenge conventional views of 'alcoholism' as a 'relapsing condition' .(Szumlinski et al. 2008 p.24) and present an alternative, competing discourse. This recognises how women's social dissonance may be both response and resistance to gendered constraints, drawing upon understandings of …

The Role Of 56th (Independent) Infantry Brigade During The Normandy Campaign June-September 1944, Andrew Holborn Jan 2009

The Role Of 56th (Independent) Infantry Brigade During The Normandy Campaign June-September 1944, Andrew Holborn

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Comprised of three regular battalions of infantry, 2nd Battalion The South Wales Borderers, 2nd Battalion The Essex Regiment, 2nd Battalion The Gloucester Regiment and Brigade HQ, 56th (Independent) Infantry Brigade was only formed in early March 1944. Its specific task was to land 'under command' of 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division on D-Day. This Division itself was made up of three brigades of very experienced infantry. What is remarkable is that 56th Infantry Brigade's infantry battalions had all been on Home Service since June 1940 and were not experienced in battle. Despite this, within only thirteen weeks of formation, 56th Infantry …

The research design used multiple methods of data collection including semi-structured interviews, informal interviews, participant observation, the keeping of a research …

Music As Complex Emergent Behaviour : An Approach To Interactive Music Systems, Peter F. E. Beyls Jan 2009

Music As Complex Emergent Behaviour : An Approach To Interactive Music Systems, Peter F. E. Beyls

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis suggests a new model of human-machine interaction in the domain of non-idiomatic musical improvisation. Musical results are viewed as emergent phenomena issuing from complex internal systems behaviour in relation to input from a single human performer. We investigate the prospect of rewarding interaction whereby a system modifies itself in coherent though non-trivial ways as a result of exposure to a human interactor. In addition, we explore whether such interactions can be sustained over extended time spans. These objectives translate into four criteria for evaluation; maximisation of human influence, blending of human and machine influence in the creation of …

Terror Management Theory: The Influence Of Salient Group Norms, Active Social Identities And In-Group Identification On The Relationship Between Mortality Salience And Bias, Andrew Erik Giannakakis Jan 2009

Terror Management Theory: The Influence Of Salient Group Norms, Active Social Identities And In-Group Identification On The Relationship Between Mortality Salience And Bias, Andrew Erik Giannakakis

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Terror management research has shown that mortality salience leads to especially positive reactions towards similar others and to especially negative reactions towards different others. The present research consists of six studies that investigate the influence of salient group norms, salient identities and in-group identification on the effects of mortality salience. In-group norms of collectivism and individualism were manipulated in Study I, whereas in-group norms of fairness and discrimination were manipulated in Study 2. Study 3 manipulated out-group norms of fairness and discrimination. The results of these studies provided evidence thai the content of salient in-group and out-group norms moderates the …

Implicit And Explicit Processes In Multiple Cue Judgement, Jonathan James Rolison Jan 2009

Implicit And Explicit Processes In Multiple Cue Judgement, Jonathan James Rolison

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Making judgements often involves integrating multiple pieces of information, or cues, in the environment. While experts, such as physicians, are able to make accurate judgements from multiple cues, they often have poor insight into how they make their inferences. This provides some indication that judgement is influenced by knowledge that is implicit and inaccessible to verbal report. In the present thesis, the cognitive processes involved in multiple cue judgement were explored by training participants on a small number of novel cues using the multiple cue probability learning (MCPL) paradigm. In a training phase, participants predicted a criterion and received outcome …

The aims of this research endeavor were to locate answers to the following questions related to energy conservation in various public contexts. Might dynamic feedback …

Biomechanical Modelling Of Musical Performance: A Case Study Of The Guitar, Leandro Costalonga Jan 2009

Biomechanical Modelling Of Musical Performance: A Case Study Of The Guitar, Leandro Costalonga

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Computer-generated musical performances are often criticised for being unable to match the expressivity found in performances by humans. Much research has been conducted in the past two decades in order to create computer technology able to perform a given piece music as expressively as humans, largely without success. Two approaches have been often adopted to research into modelling expressive music performance on computers. The first focuses on sound; that is, on modelling patterns of deviations between a recorded human performance and the music score. The second focuses on modelling the cognitive processes involved in a musical performance. Both approaches are …

Judicial Application Of The Limitation Act 1980 In Claims For Personal Injury: Has Time Run Out On The Prospect Of Certainty In The Law?, Eleanor Kemp Jan 2009

Judicial Application Of The Limitation Act 1980 In Claims For Personal Injury: Has Time Run Out On The Prospect Of Certainty In The Law?, Eleanor Kemp

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

In 2008 the landmark decision in A v Hoare1 was received from the House of Lords. The decision will have a wide impact on the law on limitation periods in claims for personal injury. Victims of intentional trespass to the person can now apply to the court to either extend or disapply the primary limitation period. This article will consider the wider implications of the decision on issues of limitation. It aims to examine what the initial rationale of limitation legislation is. With this in consideration the article then analyses judicial application of the Limitation Act 1980 prior to, and …

Saviour Siblings And The Human Fertilisation And Embryology Acts 1990 And 2008, Rebecca Thorp Jan 2009

Saviour Siblings And The Human Fertilisation And Embryology Acts 1990 And 2008, Rebecca Thorp

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

In 2003, the case of R (on the Application of Quintavalle) v Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority1 dramatically brought into light the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 as outdated and inconsistent. Authorisations for saviour sibling treatment appeared futile as cases were decided illogically, leaving some patients having to seek treatment elsewhere. The procedure of pre-implantation genetic diagnosis alongside tissue typing embryos has been a huge breakthrough in treating children born with serious life threatening diseases. However, this essentially unforeseen technology is poorly regulated in the 1990 Act and has therefore resulted in the new Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act …

Attitudes And Responses To Rape In Light Of The Low Conviction Rate, Katie Ewing Jan 2009

Attitudes And Responses To Rape In Light Of The Low Conviction Rate, Katie Ewing

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The law relating to rape is currently the subject of much debate following the Home Office figures which state that the UK conviction rate is under 6%, creating pressure on the Government to implement change. It is well-documented that pre-conceived attitudes about the nature of rape can be a huge barrier to prosecuting rape effectively. Each year the number of women reporting rape increases significantly but the conviction rate remains the same. This article examines the current role and practices of the police and CPS in prosecuting rape cases and considers the impact that rape myths and preconceived attitudes held …

Joshua And The Education Of A Nation: Jamaica Educational Reform In The Manley-Era, 1972-1980, Dionne Dean

Master's Theses

Former Jamaican Prime Minister, Michael Manley and the Peoples National Party were concerned with the future manpower needs of the developing nation. They were also concerned with what education meant for the political process in Jamaica. World financial organizations such as the IMF and World Bank loaned the country millions of dollars to aid in the development of educational programs. However, they also expected a return on investment in the form of an educated labor force to be utilized by foreign investors. Foreign aid organizations such as CIDA and UNESCO also contributed greatly to educational advancement on the island. They …

Children's Use Of The Shape Bias In The Presence Of Different Instructions, Object Types, And Emotion Cues, Vanessa Raschke Jan 2009

Children's Use Of The Shape Bias In The Presence Of Different Instructions, Object Types, And Emotion Cues, Vanessa Raschke

Master's Theses

This study explored the prevalence of the shape bias in children when faced with multiple perceptual cues. Three-to six-year-olds were shown three-dimensional objects and two-dimensional representations of these objects, half of which had emotional faces depicted on them. Of interest was whether attention to emotion would alter children's bias towards the shape of the object and how dimensionality and instruction type would affect the children's choices. The older children were equally likely to use emotion matches as shape matches, but this was not the case for the younger children, who were almost exclusively focused on shape. The non-lexical instructions induced …

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to examine levels of anxiety in athletes that participate in individual and team sports, and to examine potential gender differences. It was hypothesized that athletes that take part in an individual sport will exhibit higher levels of sport anxiety due to the fact that all attention is focused on them when they are performing. Individual sport athletes do not have any teammates present that the focus could be shifted to. It is just the athlete and his or her opponent or the individual task involved in that particular sport. Athletes in team sports may …
