Direct Products And The Intersection Map Of Certain Classes Of Finite Groups, Julia Chifman Jan 2009

Direct Products And The Intersection Map Of Certain Classes Of Finite Groups, Julia Chifman

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The main goal of this work is to examine classes of finite groups in which normality, permutability and Sylow-permutability are transitive relations. These classes of groups are called T , PT and PST , respectively. The main focus is on direct products of T , PT and PST groups and the behavior of a collection of cyclic normal, permutable and Sylow-permutable subgroups under the intersection map. In general, a direct product of finitely many groups from one of these classes does not belong to the same class, unless the orders of the direct factors are relatively prime. Examples suggest that …

Superfluid Turbulence From Quantum Kelvin Wave To Classical Kolmogorov Cascades, Jeffrey Yepez, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala, Min Soe Jan 2009

Superfluid Turbulence From Quantum Kelvin Wave To Classical Kolmogorov Cascades, Jeffrey Yepez, George Vahala, Linda L. Vahala, Min Soe

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The main topological feature of a superfluid is a quantum vortex with an identifiable inner and outer radius. A novel unitary quantum lattice gas algorithm is used to simulate quantum turbulence of a Bose-Einstein condensate superfluid described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on grids up to 57603. For the first time, an accurate power-law scaling for the quantum Kelvin wave cascade is determined: k-3. The incompressible kinetic energy spectrum exhibits very distinct power-law spectra in 3 ranges of k space: a classical Kolmogorov k-(5/3) spectrum at scales greater than the outer radius of individual quantum vortex …

An Evaluation Of The Traveling Wave Ultrasonic Motor For Force Feedback Applications, Nishant Venkatesan Jan 2009

An Evaluation Of The Traveling Wave Ultrasonic Motor For Force Feedback Applications, Nishant Venkatesan

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The traveling wave ultrasonic motor is considered for use in haptic devices where a certain input-output relation is desired between the applied force and the resulting motion. Historically, DC motors have been the standard choice for this purpose. Owing to its unique characteristics, the ultrasonic motors have been considered an attractive alternative. However, there are some limitations when using the ultrasonic motor for force-feedback applications. In particular, direct torque control is difficult, and the motor can only supply torque in the direction of motion. To accommodate these limitations we developed an indirect control approach. The experimental results demonstrate that the …

Phosphorus Implants For Off-State Improvement Of Soi Cmos Fabricated At Low Temperature, Siddhartha Singh Jan 2009

Phosphorus Implants For Off-State Improvement Of Soi Cmos Fabricated At Low Temperature, Siddhartha Singh

Theses

A study on the influence of phosphorus implanted source/drain features on the off-state performance of transistors fabricated in thin-film crystalline silicon at low temperature is presented. Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) thin film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates; both NFET and PFET devices in the same p-type layer. Lightly Doped Drain (LDD) features were implemented on NFETs, and a surface-halo source barrier (N-barrier) was implemented on PFETs, using a common implant step. A new mask set was designed with fine resolution of gate offset to investigate small changes in placement of the LDD/ N-barrier structures. The focus …

The Use Of The Child Observation Record As A Tool For Predicting Early Literacy Skills In Preschool Children, Christopher R. Singer Jan 2009

The Use Of The Child Observation Record As A Tool For Predicting Early Literacy Skills In Preschool Children, Christopher R. Singer

Theses

Reading is an important part of a child's schooling. Identifying students with literacy difficulties early in the academic process can provide them with early intervention services to keep them from falling behind. The use of an observational assessment when dealing with preschoolers can yield vital information to help identify children who may be at risk for developing reading difficulties. The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS; Good & Kaminski, 2002) is a standardized assessment currently used to identify and evaluate students' reading abilities. The Child Observation Record (COR; High/Scope, 1992) is a preschool assessment tool used to assess …

Gate-To-Channel Parasitic Capacitance Minimization And Source-Drain Leakage Evaluation In Germanium Pmos, Raymond T. Krom Jan 2009

Gate-To-Channel Parasitic Capacitance Minimization And Source-Drain Leakage Evaluation In Germanium Pmos, Raymond T. Krom

Theses

This work studies the behavior of both gate-to-channel capacitance (CGC) and source-channel-drain/well leakage in metal-gate/high-κ/Ge PMOS technology (W = 10 μm and L = 10; 5; 1 μm) under development at IMEC. The hole drift-mobility of germanium is ~4X that of silicon, leading researchers to evaluate germanium as a possible channel material replacement for PMOS expected at the 32 nm technology node. In particular this study focuses on—but is not restricted to—(1) the presence of a parasitic gate-to-channel capacitance (CGC), the large non-ideal trap assisted conductance which contributes to it, and its function versus Ge-PMOS architecture and gate length; (2) …

Investigation And Development Of Advanced Models Of Thermoelectric Generators For Power Generation Applications, Emil Sandoz-Rosado Jan 2009

Investigation And Development Of Advanced Models Of Thermoelectric Generators For Power Generation Applications, Emil Sandoz-Rosado

Theses

With developing interest in power generation applications of thermoelectrics and the growing influence of advanced materials on thermoelectric device fabrication, there is an increased demand for better understanding of module-level behavior. Likewise, novel module geometries are being explored for higher performance and require sophisticated modeling methods. In addition to new geometrical design, transport phenomena, such as Thomson heating and contact resistances, aggravate the complexity of modeling thermoelectric modules (TEMs) and thus limit design capability. Typically, these effects are either approximated (or in some cases neglected entirely) with little exploration in to the validity of the underlying assumptions associated with the …

Assessment Of A Proposed Project For Improving The Quality Of Industrial Water For The Thermal Power Plant - “Kosova B” : [Presentation Given May 20, 2009], Visar Beqiri Jan 2009

Assessment Of A Proposed Project For Improving The Quality Of Industrial Water For The Thermal Power Plant - “Kosova B” : [Presentation Given May 20, 2009], Visar Beqiri

Theses

This Capstone Project will produce an implementation plan that addresses the problem of low industrial water quality from the water treatment plant (WTP) for use in the thermal power plant - “Kosova B” (TPP-KB) in Kosovo. The project will have special importance because the quality of water is one of the most dominant problems in the TPP-KB. The problem of low industrial water quality is due to an old WTP system and manually controlled water treatment process. Since water in thermal power plants is transformed into steam, low quality water produces low quality steam. Low quality of steam causes foliation …

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

As our capacity for communication with nations across the globe increases through the advances of technology, our interactions with others with different worldviews also become more frequent. This exposure to diversity on so many levels requires a better understanding of the multiple contexts in which people from different cultural backgrounds live and the strengths they possess that help them experience well-being. In order to define the characteristics that my be viewed as strengths in different groups, we must make efforts to remember that cultural rules and norms often dictate what can be called a strength versus a weakness. It is …

The objective of this research was to determine the effects of conventional inputs on soil chemical and biological properties compared to organic systems in a four year vegetable rotation. Tillage and cover crops were the same in all treatments to avoid confounding factors often present in similar research. Additional experiments investigated plant gene expression in organic and conventional management systems and in soils with decreased microbial diversity. Experimental plots were prepared in the spring of 2004; four replications of three management treatments, organic, low-input and conventional, were arranged in a randomized complete block design. The rotation consisted of edamame soybean, …

The Generalized Burnside And Representation Rings, Eric B. Kahn Jan 2009

The Generalized Burnside And Representation Rings, Eric B. Kahn

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Making use of linear and homological algebra techniques we study the linearization map between the generalized Burnside and rational representation rings of a group G. For groups G and H, the generalized Burnside ring is the Grothendieck construction of the semiring of G × H-sets with a free H-action. The generalized representation ring is the Grothendieck construction of the semiring of rational G×H-modules that are free as rational H-modules. The canonical map between these two rings mapping the isomorphism class of a G-set X to the class of its permutation module …

Changes In Longitudinally Assessed Biomechanical Parameters Related To Increased Risk Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (Acl) Injuries In Adolescent Female And Male Athletes, Kevin Ray Ford

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Females suffer anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries at a 2 to 10-fold greater rate compared to male athletes participating in similar sports. Altered movement patterns and inadequate knee stiffness are two interrelated factors that may increase ACL injury risk. Onset of these neuromuscular risk factors may coincide with the rapid adolescent growth that results in the divergence of a multitude of neuromuscular parameters between sexes. The overall purpose of this dissertation was to determine if neuromuscular ACL injury risk factors in female athletes increase following rapid growth and development compared to males. Male and female athletes were tested with three-dimensional …

Effects Of Mindfulness And Meditation Experience On Cognitive And Emotional Functioning And Ego Depletion, Emily Lauren Brown Lykins Jan 2009

Effects Of Mindfulness And Meditation Experience On Cognitive And Emotional Functioning And Ego Depletion, Emily Lauren Brown Lykins

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Mindfulness is increasingly recognized as an important phenomenon both clinically and empirically, with mindfulness-based interventions demonstrated to be efficacious across a wide variety of patient populations and disorders (i.e., Baer, 2003). Though debate regarding the exact definition of mindfulness continues, generally accepted definitions involve the common elements of intentionally directing attention toward the present moment and adopting an accepting, nonjudgmental, and/or nonreactive orientation, intent, or attitude (i.e., Baer et al., 2006; Bishop et al., 2004). Several testable predictions in the cognitive and emotional domains were derived from the operational definition of mindfulness provided by Bishop et al. (2004). Recent empirical …

Adolphe Nourrit, Gilbert-Louis Duprez, And Transformations Of Tenor Technique In The Early Nineteenth Century: Historical And Physiological Considerations, Jason Christopher Vest Jan 2009

Adolphe Nourrit, Gilbert-Louis Duprez, And Transformations Of Tenor Technique In The Early Nineteenth Century: Historical And Physiological Considerations, Jason Christopher Vest

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The April 1837 debut of tenor Gilbert-Louis Duprez at the Paris Opéra sparked uproarious applause and inspired a new group of tenors with a different vocal technique from tenors of the previous generation. Whereas previous tenors of the nineteenth century sang in a graceful, light, and flexible style that complemented the operatic compositions of Gluck, Rossini, and Bellini, Duprez sang in a powerful, forceful voice that brought new dramatic fervor to the existing repertoire of French Grand Opera. Duprez’ stentorian vocal representations of Arnold in Rossini’s Guillaume Tell and Robert in Meyerbeer’s Robert le diable, among others, inspired composers …

Regeneration Of Damaged Growth Plate Using Igf-I Plasmid-Releasing Porous Plga Scaffolds, Nirmal Ravi Jan 2009

Regeneration Of Damaged Growth Plate Using Igf-I Plasmid-Releasing Porous Plga Scaffolds, Nirmal Ravi

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Growth plate injuries account for 15-30% of long bone fractures in children. About 10% of these result in significant growth disturbances due to formation of a boney bar. If not treated correctly, this can lead to life-lasting consequences of limb length inequalities and angular deformities. Current treatments for growth plate injuries include removal of boney bar and insertion of fat, silicone, bone cement, etc.. This treatment y is inadequate, leaving almost half of these patients with continued deformities. This dissertation reports characterization of a DNA–containing porous poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffold system, chondrogenesis using insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) plasmid-releasing scaffolds …

Investigations Of S-Glutathionylation Of Brain Proteins In The Progression Of Alzheimer's Disease And Of A Potential Glutatione Mimetic As A Treatment Of Alzheimer's Disease, Shelley Faye Newman Jan 2009

Investigations Of S-Glutathionylation Of Brain Proteins In The Progression Of Alzheimer's Disease And Of A Potential Glutatione Mimetic As A Treatment Of Alzheimer's Disease, Shelley Faye Newman

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by neurofibrillary tangles, senile plaques and loss of synapses. Many studies support the notion that oxidative stress plays an important role in AD pathogenesis. Previous studies from our laboratory employed redox proteomics to identify oxidatively modified proteins in the AD inferior parietal lobule (IPL). The proteins were consistent with AD pathology and have been central to further investigations of the disease. The present study was focused on the identification of specific targets of protein S-glutathionylation in AD, early AD (EAD), and mild cognative impairment (MCI) using a redox proteomics approach. In AD …
