Destroyed Community Property, Damaged Persons, And Insurers’ Duty To Indemnify Innocent Spouses And Other Co-Insured Fiduciaries: An Attempt To Harmonize Conflicting Federal And State Courts’ Declaratory Judgments, Willy E. Rice

Perhaps because of habit or a strong aversion to risks, consumers purchase a considerable amount of insurance generally, and consumers purchase property, indemnity, and liability insurance in particular. Typically, national property and casualty insurers sell property, indemnity, and liability insurance contracts. As a result, those insurers sales and revenues increase from year to year. At the dawn of the 21st century, foreign property and casualty insurers are realizing similar successes.

It is expected that anxious or prudent consumers would insure themselves and their various property interests against strangers, strange events, and perils over which consumers have little control or influence. …

Kingdom Compossible, Ryan Lauterio Jan 2009

Kingdom Compossible, Ryan Lauterio

Theses and Dissertations

Does God exist? Can we know for sure? What might it mean to know this? Furthermore what might it look like to make works of art while also seeking to find answers to these questions? This thesis details my personal experiences growing up in a world steeped in postmodernism and my move to answer such questions while looking to develop a meaningful, clear worldview and body of work. I have turned my focus on specific episodes in my life, which significantly illuminate a progression of thinking and experience. Together these thoughts and experiences have become the impetus for both questions …

Media To Medium: Representations Of Violence, War & Women In Pop Culture, Althea Georgelas Jan 2009

Media To Medium: Representations Of Violence, War & Women In Pop Culture, Althea Georgelas

Theses and Dissertations

My work is inspired by the mass Media and how it affects the world around me. I am interested in how violence, war and women are represented in popular culture and how this has trickled down into social behavior. I also wonder how much entertainment media reflects deep social ideals. I define mass media as the viral proliferation of ideas using television, cinema, video gaming and the Internet. I am concerned about the social and psychological affects of violent media and how it impacts the lives of women and girls. This is of particular interest to me because I am …

Personalized Noninvasive Imaging Of Volumetric Cardiac Electrophysiology, Linwei Wang Jan 2009

Personalized Noninvasive Imaging Of Volumetric Cardiac Electrophysiology, Linwei Wang

Theses

Three-dimensionally distributed electrical functioning is the trigger of mechanical contraction of the heart. Disturbance of this electrical flow is known to predispose to mechanical catastrophe but, due to its amenability to certain intervention techniques, a detailed understanding of subject-specific cardiac electrophysiological conditions is of great medical interest. In current clinical practice, body surface potential recording is the standard tool for diagnosing cardiac electrical dysfunctions. However, successful treatments normally require invasive catheter mapping for a more detailed observation of these dysfunctions. In this dissertation, we take a system approach to pursue personalized noninvasive imaging of volumetric cardiac electrophysiology. Under the guidance …

The Administration Of Justice And Human Rights, David Weissbrodt Jan 2009

The Administration Of Justice And Human Rights, David Weissbrodt

Articles

This article discusses the place of international human rights standards - as elaborated in global and regional treaties, other instruments, and authoritative interpretations - in the advancement of the administration of justice. The administration of justice includes the norms, institutions, and frameworks by which states seek to achieve fairness and efficiency in dispensing criminal, administrative, and civil justice. The United Nations, regional organisations, and other international structures have codified a substantial framework of fair trial and other administration of justice standards, which have been accepted, albeit not always followed, by most nations and which have begun to be used in …

Environmental Catalysis By Nanostructured Chromium Oxides: Methanol Conversion To Dimethyl Ether As A Clean Fuel Alternative, Mariam Humaid Salem Al-Shamisi Jan 2009

Environmental Catalysis By Nanostructured Chromium Oxides: Methanol Conversion To Dimethyl Ether As A Clean Fuel Alternative, Mariam Humaid Salem Al-Shamisi

Theses

Heterogeneous catalysts which are mainly based on metal particles and metal oxides have shown promising activity and selectivity in several environmental and industrial important reactions. Catalysis plays a key role in chemical and material manufacturing, fuel cells as well as other energy conversion and pollution control systems. Petroleum and fuel industry, in particular, rely largely on heterogeneous catalysis. Since catalysts play such a critical role in essential processes, the search for more effective and selective catalysts continues to be of great importance for both environmental and commercial considerations. The current study focuses on the catalytic conversion of methanol to other …

We present radio transient search algorithms, results, and statistics from the ongoing Arecibo Pulsar ALFA (PALFA) survey of the Galactic plane. We have discovered seven objects through a search for isolated dispersed pulses. All of these objects are Galactic and have measured periods between 0.4 and 4.7 s. One of the new discoveries has a duty cycle of 0.01%, smaller than that of any other radio pulsar. We discuss the impact of selection effects on the detectability and classification of intermittent sources, and compare the efficiencies of periodicity and single-pulse (SP) searches for various pulsar classes. For some cases we …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The first paper in this series explored the effects of altering the chemical mixture of the stellar population on an element-by-element basis on stellar evolutionary tracks and isochrones to the end of the red giant branch. This paper extends the discussion by incorporating the fully consistent synthetic stellar spectra with those isochrone models in predicting integrated colors, Lick indices, and synthetic spectra. Older populations display element ratio effects in their spectra at higher amplitude than younger populations. In addition, spectral effects in the photospheres of stars tend to dominate over effects from isochrone temperatures and lifetimes, but, further, the isochrone-based …

Xafs Debye-Waller Factors For Deformed Hemes And Metal Substituted Hemes, Nicholas Dimakis, T. Mion, C. Ramirez, G. Bunker Jan 2009

Xafs Debye-Waller Factors For Deformed Hemes And Metal Substituted Hemes, Nicholas Dimakis, T. Mion, C. Ramirez, G. Bunker

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present an efficient and accurate method for calculating XAFS Debye-Waller factors for deformed active sites of hemoproteins and metal substituted hemes. Based on the Normal Coordinate Structural Decomposition scheme, the deformation of the porphyrin macrocycle is expressed as a linear combination of the normal modes of the planar species. In our approach, we identify the modes that contribute most to the deformation. Small metal-porphyrin structures which match the macrocycle structural deformation of the deformed hemoprotein site are used to calculate the Debye-Waller parameters at sample's temperature. The Debye-Waller factors are directly obtained by calculating the normal mode spectrum of …

Geology And Wine In Missouri: Spatial Analysis Of Terroir Using A Geographic Information System And Remote Sensing, Kathryn Nora Barnard

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The concept of terroir, based on the French word meaning 'sense of place,' suggests that flavor and quality of wine is associated with certain physical characteristics of the earth as well as viticulture and viniculture practices. The physical characteristics of terroir include soil, geology, topography, and climate. Designated American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) are discrete appellations in the United States that have well-established and historic viticultural practices, but the relationship between terroir and AVA appellations is complex. Wineries are a growing industry in the United States and the use of a GIS and remote sensing has proved useful in many other …

Strong Field Effects On Pulsar Arrival Times: Circular Orbits And Equatorial Beams, Yan Wang, Fredrick Jenet, Teviet Creighton, Richard H. Price Jan 2009

Strong Field Effects On Pulsar Arrival Times: Circular Orbits And Equatorial Beams, Yan Wang, Fredrick Jenet, Teviet Creighton, Richard H. Price

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

If a pulsar orbits a supermassive black hole, the timing of pulses that pass close to the hole will show a variety of strong field effects. To compute the intensity and timing of pulses that have passed close to a nonrotating black hole, we introduce here a simple formalism based on two \"universal functions,\" one for the bending of photon trajectories and the other for the photon travel time on these trajectories. We apply this simple formalism to the case of a pulsar in circular orbit that beams its pulses into the orbital plane. In addition to the \"primary\" pulses …

Strict-Dominance Solvability Of Games On Continuous Strategy Spaces, Andrew Campbell Elkington Jan 2009

Strict-Dominance Solvability Of Games On Continuous Strategy Spaces, Andrew Campbell Elkington

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The concept of strict dominance provides a technique that can be used normatively to predict the play of games based only on the assumption of individual rationality. Such predictions, unlike those based on Nash equilibria, do not depend on players’ beliefs about the behaviour of others. One strategy strictly dominates another if and only if the payoff from the first strategy is strictly greater than the payoff from the second, no matter how the opponent(s) plays. It is possible for iterated elimination of strictly dominated strategies to remove all but a single choice for each player, in which case we …

Can Overeating Induce A Conditioned Taste Avoidance In Previously Restricted Rats?, Amanda Louise Hertel Jan 2009

Can Overeating Induce A Conditioned Taste Avoidance In Previously Restricted Rats?, Amanda Louise Hertel

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

While feeding is rewarding, the feeling of satiation has been theorized to be aversive under certain conditions. Using a food-restriction model of overeating developed in our laboratory the results presented here suggest that overeating, and the resulting experience of satiation, is capable of supporting a conditioned taste avoidance.

Rats had either ad lib (n=8) or restricted (n=24) food access (receiving 50% of the food eaten by ad lib fed rats) for 8 days. All rats were then given 24 hr access to a 0.1% saccharin solution, and two groups of food-restricted rats were given access to either 100% of the …

The Influence Of Concurrent Visual Feedback During Treadmill Training In Parkinson’S Disease, Rose Ellen Johnston Jan 2009

The Influence Of Concurrent Visual Feedback During Treadmill Training In Parkinson’S Disease, Rose Ellen Johnston

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Walking is an exercise that has been thought to benefit Parkinson’s disease (PD). In a laboratory setting treadmills have been employed to successfully improve certain aspects of gait in PD (Cakit et al., 2007, Fisher et al., 2008, Herman et al., 2007, Miyai et al., 2000, Miyai et al., 2002, Pohl et al., 2003). Research has also indicated that walking with visual cues can improve aspects of gait that are impaired in PD (Azulay et al., 1999, Bagely et al., 1997, Nieuwboer et al., 2007), however, the integration of visual cues and treadmill training has yet to be studied. Thus, …

Applications Of New Diffusion Models To Barrier Option Pricing And First Hitting Time In Finance, Keang Ly Jan 2009

Applications Of New Diffusion Models To Barrier Option Pricing And First Hitting Time In Finance, Keang Ly

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The main focus of this thesis is in the application of a new family of analytical solvable diffusion models to arbitrage-free pricing exotic financial derivatives, such as barrier options. The family of diffusions is the so-called “Drifted Bessel family” having nonlinear (smile-like) local volatility with multiple adjustable parameters. In particular, the drifted Bessel-K diffusion is used to model asset (stock) price processes under a risk-neutral measure whereby discounted asset price are martingales.

Closed-form spectral expansions for barrier option values are derived within the Bessel-K family of models. This follow from the closed-form spectral expansions for the transition probability …

Non-Biological Caregivers’ Experiences Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd) Support Groups, Sharon Porty Jan 2009

Non-Biological Caregivers’ Experiences Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (Fasd) Support Groups, Sharon Porty

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Caregivers of children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) are an extremely valuable resource, and supporting a stable and nurturing home environment may be the most achievable intervention to improve the child’s prognosis. Very little research has been done to explore effective interventions that focus on the FASD caregiver, rather than the child, for the purposes of preventing caregiver burnout and placement breakdown. The central purpose of this study is to explore non-biological parent caregivers’ experiences of FASD caregiver support groups in order to capture a better understanding of the value of this resource as one part of a continuum …

Simulation Studies On Estimation Of Variance Components For Multilevel Models, Sara Vakilian Jan 2009

Simulation Studies On Estimation Of Variance Components For Multilevel Models, Sara Vakilian

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

With the presence of unequal sampling in a multilevel model, the weight inflated estimators for variance components can be biased even though the use of survey weights results in design consistent estimators of the parameters. In this thesis I will carry out a simulation study to examine the performance of current existing methods and I will examine the resampling method for correcting bias of estimators of variance components of a multilevel model with covariates. This study will be based on these three papers: “Weighting for Unequal Selection Probabilities in Multilevel Models” by D. Pfeffermann , C. J. Skinner, D.J. Holmes, …

Voices Of Anorexia Uncovered: The Healing Journey Unveiled, Elisha Van Harte Jan 2009

Voices Of Anorexia Uncovered: The Healing Journey Unveiled, Elisha Van Harte

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness. The current rate of anorexia nervosa is 1% in North America, representing approximately three million cases. Consequently, this illness has attracted a growing body of research and treatment. Current research in the field has focused primarily on the etiology of the illness. Furthermore, outcome studies are primarily quantitative in nature and have indicated that there is no treatment modality that consistently results in longitudinal recovery. What appears to be absent from the literature is the exploration of the recovery process from the perspective of those who have recovered. The …
