African American Student Retention: A Study Of The Effects Of An Intrusive Advising Intervention At A Career College, Deanna R. Burt

Dissertations

This casestudy integrates mixed methodologies to examine the retention effects of an "intrusive advising" intervention using two groups of at-risk, first-time, first-year, African American students enrolled in a predominantly-White, career ("proprietary") college. By design, the study uses data from mixed sources to respond to the overarching research question, "How does intrusive advising influence the retention of African American students who are at risk of attrition?"

Quantitative data was collected and analyzed using a quasi-experimental research design methodology. Qualitative data was collected and analyzed from focus groups, personal interviews, and field notes as a means to provide deeper understanding of the …

The Development Of Technological Management Model: A Conceptualization Of Computer Technology In The Workplace, Paul E. Madlock Aug 2009

The Development Of Technological Management Model: A Conceptualization Of Computer Technology In The Workplace, Paul E. Madlock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a model that would serve to assist scholars, business professionals, and employees manage the influence of computer technology in the workplace. This study also focused on mandated use environments given the paucity of research in this area. In doing so, Technology Management Model (TMM) was developed. Actor Network Theory (ANT; Callon, 1986; Latour, 1987; Law, 1987) and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT; Bandura, 1986) provided support for the multifactor design of TMM. As a result, TMM was comprised of three latent variables of technological, personal, and organizational factors though to influence the attitudes …

Cultural Adaptation Of Treatments: A Resource For Considering Culture In Evidence-Based Practice, Guillermo Bernal, María I. Jiménez-Chafey, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez Aug 2009

Cultural Adaptation Of Treatments: A Resource For Considering Culture In Evidence-Based Practice, Guillermo Bernal, María I. Jiménez-Chafey, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez

Psychology Faculty Publications

There is a growing interest in whether and how to adapt psychotherapies to take into account the cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic context of diverse ethnocultural groups. At the root of the debate is theissue of whether evidence-based treatments (EBTs) developed within a particular linguistic and cultural context are appropriate for ethnocultural groups that do not share the same language, cultural values, or both. There is considerable evidence that culture and context influence almost every aspect of the diagnostic and treatment process. Yet, there are concerns about fidelity of interventions, and some have questioned whether tinkering with well-established EBTs is warranted. …

Demographic data were collected via a mailed survey questionnaire followed by, with consent, a web based validated Sentence Completion Test International- Maturity Assessment Profile Research Version (2) (SCTi- MAP) to determine their stage of leadership development. Of the 97 participants, 86% (n=83) responded to the survey questionnaire with 92% (n=79) rating the importance of dietitians being leaders as very important; 100% (n=83) …

Autonomy-Dependency Paradox In Organization-Public Relationships: A Case Study Analysis Of A University Art Museum, Christopher E. Wilson Jul 2009

Autonomy-Dependency Paradox In Organization-Public Relationships: A Case Study Analysis Of A University Art Museum, Christopher E. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

This study presents an exploration of the autonomy-dependence paradox inherent in organization-public relationships that is informed by paradox theory, structuration theory and scholarly and philosophical literature on authenticity. These theories suggest that relationships between organizations and their publics are defined by interdependence, or the centripetal and centrifugal forces of autonomy and dependence that cause tensions that can influence the decision making of the relational partners. They also suggest that organizations must use their agency, their knowledge of relational structures, and their understanding of their authentic selves to manage their own behavior and communication rather than that of their publics. The …

What Are The Factors Of Success For Professional Learning Communities In High School?, Michael Stanton Jul 2009

What Are The Factors Of Success For Professional Learning Communities In High School?, Michael Stanton

Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs

High schools suffer from poor performance in attendance, achievement, literacy development, and postsecondary outcomes. Teachers cannot redesign schools by trying harder; new models of collaboration and problem solving are key to transforming their schools. Professional learning communities (PLCs) with professional development in transformative learning, constructivist adult learning theories, and collaborative problem solving may provide the best answer for school change. What are the best processes and methods for high school teachers to transform their frames of reference to solve their common difficult dilemmas while changing their approach to problem solving to improve schools and student proficiency in standards? I collected …

The Human Side Of Change: Towards A Pragmatic, Evolutionary Conception Of Cognition And Emotion In Organizational Change, Jason Smith Jul 2009

The Human Side Of Change: Towards A Pragmatic, Evolutionary Conception Of Cognition And Emotion In Organizational Change, Jason Smith

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation synthesizes and analyzes an emblematic sample of three prevalent psychological approaches to organizational change and learning, giving particular attention to the conception of cognition and emotion. It also explores some of the philosophical and psychological assumptions undergirding these approaches. A web model depicting various epistemological influences is offered as a tool for exploring influences on the psychological research within and beyond this study. A second conceptual model is also offered as a tool for considering the hierarchical treatment and preferential placement of cognition over emotion theory and practice. The project draws on general philosophy, psychology, evolutionary theory, and …

Hardiness, Well-Being, And Health: A Meta-Analytic Summary Of Three Decades Of Research, Celina Marie Oliver Jul 2009

Hardiness, Well-Being, And Health: A Meta-Analytic Summary Of Three Decades Of Research, Celina Marie Oliver

Dissertations and Theses

In recent decades, as scientific understanding regarding the effects of stress on health and well-being has grown, researchers have shown increasing interest in personal factors such as hardiness that may enhance one's ability to remain resilient under stressful conditions. Hardiness is a complex trait composed of three components (commitment, control, and challenge) that combine synergistically to increase stress tolerance. Over time, a large and complex body of research has accumulated, and while many qualitative reviews have been conducted, quantitative summaries remain rare. This study provides an empirical synthesis of research findings examining the relationships between hardiness and correlates related to …

Consistency Of Developmental Outcomes Of 4-H Camp Experiences Over Time And Across Sites, Sarah Baughman, Barry Garst, Nicholas Fuhrman Jul 2009

Consistency Of Developmental Outcomes Of 4-H Camp Experiences Over Time And Across Sites, Sarah Baughman, Barry Garst, Nicholas Fuhrman

Journal of Youth Development

The purpose of the reported trend study was to examine consistency in youth life skill outcomes following exposure to 4-H camp. Parents of campers ages 9 to 13 were randomly sampled in 2001, 2004, and 2007 and asked to report changes in their child’s behavior following camp. Statistical analysis indicates an overall consistency in parent reports of youth life skill development over time. Life skills that showed consistent gains over seven years and across six 4-H educational centers included an enhanced ability for youth to take care of their own things and to share work responsibilities. Multivariate statistics revealed that …

Be Careful What You Ask For: How Inquiry Strategy Influences Readiness Mode, Leslie E. Serkera, Roxanne Zolin, J. Goosby Smith

Organization Management Journal

Much has been written about affecting change in the workplace, including how to help employees prepare for the process. However, little is known about how participation influences employees’ emotions and attitudes at the start of an intervention. By qualitatively analyzing conversations that were triggered by an organizational change effort, we explored how different inquiry strategies influence readiness for change. We examined four inquiry strategies by combining strength or deficit frames with individual or organizational focus. Distinctive conversational patterns emerged within each strategy, which we believe influence peoples’ change readiness. In this article we present four readiness modes to describe these …

Publications

The purpose of this study was to explore the developmental outcomes of 4-H camp experiences as identified by parents and guardians. The authors examined (1) the changes in youth life skill behaviors that parents/guardians attribute to a 5-day residential 4-H camping experience, (2) their perceptions of consistency in the life skills gained across multiple camps and years, and (3) differences in life skill development between male and female youth participants. Parents of campers ages 9-13 were randomly sampled in 2001 (n=363), 2004 (n=326), and 2007 (n=326) and asked to report changes in their child's behavior following camp. Results indicate an …

Sailing Off The Map: Managing Organizational Change In The Library Instruction Movement, Kristen Bullard, Wendy Holliday Jul 2009

Sailing Off The Map: Managing Organizational Change In The Library Instruction Movement, Kristen Bullard, Wendy Holliday

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2007

The theme of this conference, uncharted waters, can evoke the disconcerting nature of uncertainty. As instruction librarians face challenges in a landscape of change, how can we navigate our institution’s organizational culture to be a strategic asset rather than a barrier to change?

This session will present case studies on organizational change from two instruction programs, Utah State University (USU) and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK). In our case studies, we analyze artifacts of culture, including program goals and planning documents, and interviews with stakeholders to determine the organization’s dominant culture and its views and expectations about change. We then …

An Application Of Value-Of-Information To Decision Process Reengineering, Jeffrey Keisler, Mark Brodfuhrer Jul 2009

An Application Of Value-Of-Information To Decision Process Reengineering, Jeffrey Keisler, Mark Brodfuhrer

Management Science and Information Systems Faculty Publication Series

Value of information (VOI) methods were used to guide changes to recurrent organizational decision processes, under a reengineering effort at a major automobile manufacturer to reduce supply and demand imbalances involving capacity for parts and products. We modeled representative decisions assuming as they would be made with and without the benefit of improved information flows, and calculated the resulting increase in expected value. By factoring in the entire range of decisions affected by a process change, we scaled the value of each organizational change to a life-cycle value. The results quantified the impact of organizational changes in order to refine …

A Comparison Of Two Theoretical Models Of Procedural Justice In The Context Of Child Protection Proceedings, Twila Wingrove Jul 2009

A Comparison Of Two Theoretical Models Of Procedural Justice In The Context Of Child Protection Proceedings, Twila Wingrove

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In this study, the researcher tested two theoretical models of justice in the context of child protection proceedings. Participants read a case file describing a hypothetical child neglect case. The file included the court petition, the caseworker’s court report, a summary of the protective custody hearing, and the judge’s final order. Within the case file, the researcher manipulated four variables: procedural treatment, interpersonal treatment, severity of child neglect, and assigned role (judge or parent). Results of confirmatory factor analyses suggested that a four-factor model of justice judgments best fit the data. Consistent with the organizational justice approach (Colquitt, 2001) the …

An Organizational Communication Perspective On The University: Understanding How Individuals Constitute Organizations, Charles Ritchie Woffinden

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Change in the university has been the topic of recent discussion in contemporary business, popular, and academic literature. This thesis uses organizational communication theory and literature to examine how communication constitutes what we know as the university. This perspective provides an analytical lens to confront the organizational questions central to contemporary ideas surrounding the university. Furthermore, it generates new ways of viewing current issues, debates, and contestation regarding its constitution. This thesis examines the role of communication as a powerful process, and the agency of each individual in creating, recreating, and transforming the university.

To understand the constitution of the …

What Is “The Learning Filipino Firm”?, Raymund B. Habaradas Jul 2009

What Is “The Learning Filipino Firm”?, Raymund B. Habaradas

DLSU Business & Economics Review

“The learning Filipino firm” can be classified into three types, namely the reactive firm, which is a reluctant learner; the adaptive firm, which is an eager learner; and the generative firm, which is a dynamic learner. This typology is based on the hypothesis that a firm’s learning style and its innovative capability is influenced by its organizational design. Among the key dimensions that must be considered are as follows: (a) organizational strategy, (b) organizational structure, and (c) organizational culture. These dimensions are closely intertwined, and, therefore, collectively influence a firm’s ability to constantly renew itself.

From Crisis To Opportunity: Environmental Jolt, Corporate Acquisitions, And Firm Performance, William P. Wan, Daphne W. Yiu Jul 2009

From Crisis To Opportunity: Environmental Jolt, Corporate Acquisitions, And Firm Performance, William P. Wan, Daphne W. Yiu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study incorporates the external environmental context into the study of corporate acquisitions by examining the performance implications of corporate acquisitions during an environmental jolt that alters the levels of environmental munificence. We posit that compared to the periods before and after an environmental jolt, corporate acquisitions during a jolt would be positively related to firm performance. Furthermore, we suggest that organizational slack would improve firm performance and accentuate the positive relationship between corporate acquisitions and firm performance during an environmental jolt; however, it would have negative impact on firm performance and make the acquisition-performance relationship more negative before and …

Assessing Online Collaboration Among Language Teachers: A Cross-Institutional Case Study, Nike Arnold, Lara Ducate, Lara Lomicka, Gillian Lord

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper focuses on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) among foreign language (FL) graduate students from three universities, who worked together to create a wiki. In order to investigate the nature of CSCL among participants, this qualitative case study used the Curtis and Lawson framework (2001) to conduct a content analysis of learners’ collaborative behaviors. Transcript and survey analyses indicate that the success of collaborative interaction depends largely on the group members themselves. Differing levels of participation indicate that not everyone was equally involved with the wiki project, which ultimately affected the level of collaboration, the group dynamics, and the final …
