Evaluation Of Hiv Counseling And Testing In Anc Settings And Adherence To Short Course Antiretroviral Prophylaxis For Pmtct In Francistown, Botswana, Carolyn Baek, Tracy Creek, Lee Ann Jones, Louis Apicella, Jennifer Redner, Naomi Rutenberg

HIV and AIDS

The vast majority of children infected with HIV are the result of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of the virus during pregnancy, labor, or breastfeeding. Botswana is one of the first countries in the developing world with a national prevention program (PMTCT) to reduce vertical transmission. The Horizons Program of the Population Council, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Premiere Personnel in Botswana, conducted an evaluation to describe the adherence of pregnant women to the current PMTCT regimen. The report recommends standardizing post-test counseling content through the use of job aids and adapting existing WHO materials, …

Regulation Of Alginate Production Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Fredrick Heath Damron Jan 2009

Regulation Of Alginate Production Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Fredrick Heath Damron

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P.a.) is a major threat to the health and well being of a person living with cystic fibrosis (CF). P.a. is capable of conversion to mucoidy or alginate overproducing phenotype. Mucoidy facilitates the chronic infection of P.a. infection in the CF lung. Mutations in the anti-sigma factor mucA, result in activation of the sigma factor AlgU which promotes expression of alginate through the alginate biosynthetic operon. However, P.a. can produce alginate independent of mucA mutation via a mechanism known as regulated proteolysis. Proteases AlgW and MucP can degrade MucA to liberate and activate AlgU. In this dissertation, two …

Pursuing The Perfect Mother: Why America's Criminalization Of Maternal Substance Abuse Is Not The Answer- A Compartive Legal Analysis, Linda C. Fentiman

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

In this Article the author will examine not only the substantive legal differences between the United States, Canada, and France, but will also explore how these legal rules fit within a broader social, political, and religious setting. This Article will pursue four lines of inquiry. First, it will briefly chronicle the history of criminal prosecution of pregnant women in America and show how these prosecutions have become markedly more aggressive over the last twenty years. Second, it will situate these prosecutions in the full context of American law and culture, demonstrating how the fetus has received increasing legal recognition in …

Learning Neuroscience The Hard Way: The Terri Schiavo Case And The Ethics Of Effective Representation, Robert A. Destro Jan 2009

Learning Neuroscience The Hard Way: The Terri Schiavo Case And The Ethics Of Effective Representation, Robert A. Destro

Scholarly Articles

Part I of this article looks at the three main "narratives" that are commonly employed to describe the Schiavo case, and it recounts the basic facts concerning Terri Schiavo's brain injury and the early, but quickly-abandoned, attempt at rehabilitation. Part II is an examination of how the demise of one of the most profoundly harmful dogmas in the history of medicine-the theory that the brain is "hard-wired" and that no amount of rehabilitation can cause the brain to rewire itself-occurred too late in the litigation for the judges or advocates in either Schiavo or Englaro to understand that Terri and …

Entitled Against None: How The Wrongly Decided Croker Island Case Perpetuates Aboriginal Dispossession, Siiri Aileen Wilson Jan 2009

Entitled Against None: How The Wrongly Decided Croker Island Case Perpetuates Aboriginal Dispossession, Siiri Aileen Wilson

Washington International Law Journal

Australia’s 1992 landmark case of Mabo v. The State of Queensland [No. 2] revoked the concept of terra nullius and for the first time since European colonization of the continent allowed indigenous Australians to obtain legal ownership of their traditional lands. The following year this groundbreaking decision became statutory law with the enactment of the Native Title Act (NTA) of 1993. The case law and the statutory act both failed, however, to adequately address the question of Aboriginal claims to sea properties. For many Australian Aboriginal groups, ownership of traditional lands does not abruptly end at a shoreline but extends …

Mining The Intersections: Advancing The Rights Of Women And Children With Disabilities Within An Interrelated Web Of Human Rights, Rangita De Silva De Alwis Jan 2009

Mining The Intersections: Advancing The Rights Of Women And Children With Disabilities Within An Interrelated Web Of Human Rights, Rangita De Silva De Alwis

Washington International Law Journal

This article argues that disability rights are a powerful lens through which to address the multiple forms of discrimination and subordination that women and children with disabilities face. A shift in the human rights paradigm that enables the different human rights treaties affecting women and children with disabilities to be implemented together, within an interlocking web of the human rights framework, will provide the necessary safeguards against multiple and cross cutting forms of discrimination against women and children with disabilities. At the same time, different social movements must come together at these points of intersection in order to create a …

A Global Meta-Analysis Of Soil Exchangeable Cations, Ph, Carbon, And Nitrogen With Afforestation, Sean T. Berthrong, Esteban G. Jobbagy, Robert B. Jackson

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Afforestation, the conversion of non-forested lands to forest plantations, can sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide, but the rapid growth and harvesting of biomass may deplete nutrients and degrade soils if managed improperly. The goal of this study is to evaluate how afforestation affects mineral soil quality, including pH, sodium, exchangeable cations, organic carbon, and nitrogen, and to examine the magnitude of these changes regionally where afforestation rates are high. We also examine potential mechanisms to reduce the impacts of afforestation on soils and to maintain long-term productivity.

Across diverse plantation types (153 sites) to a depth of 30 cm of mineral …

Servant-Leadership As A Cornerstone For Restoration Of Human Dignity, Jose Hernandez Jan 2009

Servant-Leadership As A Cornerstone For Restoration Of Human Dignity, Jose Hernandez

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Human beings are experiencing a loss of dignity that diminishes us as a community of people. Many times the consequences of losing our dignity are not severe, allowing us to recover in a short time; other times, they can be so dramatic that they end up scarring us for a lifetime. Those who lose their dignity ultimately have the choice to find resiliency and recover from their loss. Likewise, those who violate the dignity of others bear the responsibility to choose to live with morality and justice toward others. As Greenleaf (1977) explained, "Because we have a natural authority resulting …

Rules Limiting Athletic Performance Or Prohibiting Athletic Participation For Health Reasons: Legal And Ethical Considerations, Matthew J. Mitten Jan 2009

Rules Limiting Athletic Performance Or Prohibiting Athletic Participation For Health Reasons: Legal And Ethical Considerations, Matthew J. Mitten

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the paradox between: 1) intercollegiate sport's objectives of maximizing athletic performance and providing athletic participation opportunities to those possessing the requisite physical ability and skills to compete successfully; and 2) National Collegiate Athletic Association rules that limit athletic performance by all student-athletes, or university requirements that prohibit individual student-athletes from participating in intercollegiate sports, for health reasons. Some student-athletes seek to maximize athletic performance by taking performance-enhancing substances, even if doing so creates potential future adverse health effects. Others may want to participate in intercollegiate sports with a physical abnormality and are willing to assume an increased …

Analyzing Adherence To Prenatal Supplements: Does Pill Count Measure Up?, Kristie Elizabeth Appelgren

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Results of a trial of prenatal Vitamin D supplementation are analyzed for associations of pill count data with serum-based measures of adherence. Obiective: It is hypothesized that adherence as measured by pill count will have a significant association with serum-based measures of adherence. Design: The study from which the data for this analysis were derived is a large randomized, controlled, and double-blinded trial of vitamin D supplements in pregnant women. The women have been stratified by race and randomized into three groups, which receive a 400IU (control), 20001U, or 40001U dose of vitamin D[subscript 3] once daily. Women enter …

Microbial Biodiversity Of Great Salt Lake, Utah, Bart C. Weimer, Giovanni Rompato, Jacob Parnell, Reed Gann, Balasubramanian Ganesan, Cristian Navas, Martin Gonzalez, Mario Clavel, Steven Albee-Scott

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

Microbial biodiversity is difficult to measure in extreme environments due to the inability to culture many of the species, especially from hypersaline environments. Great Salt Lake (GSL), Utah, USA offers a unique ecology to study microbial diversity across a salt gradient. GSL has increasing salt from South to North that varies from marine salt concentrations to saturation, respectively. We used three methods to examine the biodiversity of the GSL-traditional cultivation on solid media, 16s rRNA gene sequencing, multiplexed 16s rRNA gene hybridization to the phylochip, and DNA hybridization to the Geochip for metabolic diversity estimates. Over 40 isolates from the …
