Delinquent Or Distracted?: Attention Deficit Disorder And The Construction Of The Juvenile Offender, Rashmi Goel Jan 2009

Delinquent Or Distracted?: Attention Deficit Disorder And The Construction Of The Juvenile Offender, Rashmi Goel

Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship

William and Billy, 1 two boys, each 13 years old, appear in juvenile court. Neither has any criminal history. Both are doing poorly in school. Both have been cited for truancy in the past. Both are appearing on assault charges arising out of schoolyard fights. If we could peer into their brains, we would find that both have the same brain chemistry, characteristic of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). 2 In the end, the court finds one delinquent, and the other merely distracted. The court finds one in need of confinement, and the other in need of care. Two different …

Wrongful Life And Procreative Decisions, Bonnie Steinbock Jan 2009

Wrongful Life And Procreative Decisions, Bonnie Steinbock

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

This paper defends and refines the claim that procreation can be wrongful. Procreation is wrongful first when the "nonexistence condition" is met: the person's life will be filled with suffering that cannot be ameliorated or empty of all the things that make life worth living. Recognizing that this condition is rarely met, the paper then argues that it is wrong to create a person in less extreme circumstances: when the person is likely not to have a minimaly decent life, one in which certain important interests cannot be satisfied. Although we must be very cautious about concluding that any particular …

Animal Science

The objective of these studies was to evaluate the effects of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH), fed for 0, 20, or 30 d, on meat quality attributes of calf-fed Holstein steers. Steers were slaughtered at a commercial facility, and carcasses were selected by HCW to represent the pen mean. Further carcass selection was based on quality grade (Choice and Select) and yield grade. Proximate composition, measures of water holding capacity, and tenderness using Warner-Bratzler shear force after 7, 14, or 21 d postmortem were evaluated on the shoulder clod (triceps brachii), top butt (gluteus medius), and strip loin (longissimus lumborum). Percentage of …

Relationships Between Soil Nitrate Desorbed From Anion-Exchange Membranes, Canopy Reflectance And Nitrate Leaching Losses From Cool-Season Lawn Turf., Thomas J. Barry, Karl Guillard, Salvatore S. Mangiafico Jan 2009

Relationships Between Soil Nitrate Desorbed From Anion-Exchange Membranes, Canopy Reflectance And Nitrate Leaching Losses From Cool-Season Lawn Turf., Thomas J. Barry, Karl Guillard, Salvatore S. Mangiafico

Plant Science Articles

Nutrient leaching studies are expensive and require expertise in water collection and analyses. Less expensive or easier methods that estimate leaching losses would be desirable. The objective of this study was to determine if anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) and reflectance meters could predict nitrate (NO3-N) leaching losses from a cool-season lawn turf. A two-year field study used an established 90% Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.)-10% creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) turf that received 0 to 98 kg N ha-1 month-1, from May through November. Soil monolith lysimeters collected leachate that was analyzed for NO3-N concentration. Soil NO3-N was estimated with …

C-Reactive Protein, Obesity, And Colorectal Cancer Mortality : A Prospective Study Of The Nhanes Iii-Ndi Dataset, Alexandra Maria Hajduk

UCHC Graduate School Masters Theses 2003 - 2010

Chronic inflammation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases, including colorectal cancer. Obesity has been identified as a risk factor for colorectal cancer via induction of a chronic state of low-grade bowel inflammation due to excessive release of inflammatory cytokines such as C-Reactive protein (CRP) by adipocytes. Prior studies have produced evidence of positive associations between CRP and colon cancer risk but none to date have assessed if elevated CRP is an independent risk factor when controlling for obesity. Also, controversy exists about which measure of adiposity best predicts risk of colon cancer. METHODS: We examined these …

Incidence Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Associated Risk Factors In Hepatitis C-Related Advanced Liver Disease, Herbert L. Bonkovsky Jan 2009

Incidence Of Hepatocellular Carcinoma And Associated Risk Factors In Hepatitis C-Related Advanced Liver Disease, Herbert L. Bonkovsky

UCHC Articles - Research

Background and Aims

Although the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is increasing in the United States, data from large prospective studies are limited. We evaluated the hepatitis C antiviral long-term treatment against cirrhosis (HALT-C) cohort for the incidence of HCC and associated risk factors.

Methods

HCV-positive patients with bridging fibrosis or cirrhosis that did not respond to peginterferon and ribavirin were randomized to groups that were given maintenance peginterferon for 3.5 years or no treatment. HCC incidence was determined by Kaplan-Meier analysis and baseline factors associated with HCC were analyzed by Cox regression.

Results

1,005 patients (mean age 50.2 years, …

Genetic And Environmental Contributions To Body Mass Index: Comparative Analysis Of Monozygotic Twins, Dizygotic Twins And Same-Age Unrelated Siblings, Nancy Segal, R. Feng, Shirley Mcguire, D. Allison, S. Miller Jan 2009

Genetic And Environmental Contributions To Body Mass Index: Comparative Analysis Of Monozygotic Twins, Dizygotic Twins And Same-Age Unrelated Siblings, Nancy Segal, R. Feng, Shirley Mcguire, D. Allison, S. Miller

Psychology

Background—Earlier studies have established that a substantial percentage of variance in obesity-related phenotypes is explained by genetic components. However, only one study has used both virtual twins (VTs) and biological twins and was able to simultaneously estimate additive genetic, non-additive genetic, shared environmental and unshared environmental components in body mass index (BMI). Our current goal was to re-estimate four components of variance in BMI, applying a more rigorous model to biological and virtual multiples with additional data. Virtual multiples share the same family environment, offering unique opportunities to estimate common environmental influence on phenotypes that cannot be separated from …

Nutrient Uptake And Mineralization During Leaf Decay In Streams – A Model Simulation, J. R. Webster, J. D. Newbold, Steven A. Thomas, P. J. Mulholland Jan 2009

Nutrient Uptake And Mineralization During Leaf Decay In Streams – A Model Simulation, J. R. Webster, J. D. Newbold, Steven A. Thomas, P. J. Mulholland

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We developed a stoichiometrically explicit computer model to examine how heterotrophic uptake of nutrients and microbial mineralization occurring during the decay of leaves in streams may be important in modifying nutrient concentrations. The simulations showed that microbial uptake can substantially decrease stream nutrient concentrations during the initial phases of decomposition, while mineralization may produce increases in concentrations during later stages of decomposition. The simulations also showed that initial nutrient content of the leaves can affect the stream nutrient concentration dynamics and determine whether nitrogen or phosphorus is the limiting nutrient. Finally, the simulations suggest a net retention (uptake > mineralization) of …

Nondestructive Estimation Of Anthocyanin Content In Grapevine Leaves, Mark R. Steele, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Donald C. Rundquist, Mark N. Merzlyak Jan 2009

Nondestructive Estimation Of Anthocyanin Content In Grapevine Leaves, Mark R. Steele, Anatoly A. Gitelson, Donald C. Rundquist, Mark N. Merzlyak

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The anthocyanin (Anth) content in leaves provides valuable information about the physiological status of plants. Thus, there is a need for accurate, efficient, practical methodologies to estimate this biochemical parameter. Reflectance measurement is a means of quickly and nondestructively assessing leaf Anth content in situ. The objective of this study was to test the overall performance and accuracy of nondestructive techniques for estimating Anth content in grapevine leaves. Relationships were established between Anth content and four vegetation indices: NIR (near-infrared)/green, red/green, anthocyanin reflectance index (ARI, based on reflectances in bands within the green and the red-edge regions), and a modified …

Variability Of Anaerobic Animal Waste Lagoon Delta15N Source Signatures, Sadayappan Mariappan, Mary Exner Spalding, Glen E. Martin, Roy F. Spalding Jan 2009

Variability Of Anaerobic Animal Waste Lagoon Delta15N Source Signatures, Sadayappan Mariappan, Mary Exner Spalding, Glen E. Martin, Roy F. Spalding

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

High ammonium-N concentrations derived from animal wastes stored and partially treated in earthen anaerobic lagoons at confined feeding facilities can seep to groundwater. δ15N-NH4+ values from +2.0 to +59.1‰ in 13 lagoons complicate identification of lagoon seepage as well as land-applied lagoon effluent in ground and surface waters. The spectrum of δ15N values requires site-specific isotope characterization of the potential source. Feed and fresh manure and urine δ15N values indicate that most N isotopic fractionation occurs after excretion. Lagoon management clearly affects enrichment. δ15N-total Kjeldahl N (TKN) and δ15 …
