Revision Of The Genus Chalcasthenes Arrow (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctoderini) From The Solomon Islands, Mary Liz Jameson, Brett C. Ratcliffe Jan 2009

Revision Of The Genus Chalcasthenes Arrow (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctoderini) From The Solomon Islands, Mary Liz Jameson, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Abstract The genus Chalcasthenes Arrow (Dynastinae: Oryctoderini), a scarab beetle genus endemic to the Solomon Islands, is reviewed. Based on examination of type specimens, the genus Strehlia Frey (Rutelinae: Rutelini: Parastasiina) is a new junior synonym of Chalcasthenes. The historical classification of these genera (either in the subfamily Dynastinae or Rutelinae) and character-based criteria for assigning the taxa to the Dynastinae are provided. We discuss character states that support the monophyly of members of the genus Chalcasthenes, comment on the distribution and biogeography of species in the genus and provide a key to species. The genus includes four …

Growth And Reproduction Of Ruppia Maritima In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Tamara M. Mcgovern Jan 2009

Growth And Reproduction Of Ruppia Maritima In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Tamara M. Mcgovern

Gulf of Mexico Science

Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is an important component of many marine ecosystems, but SAV populations have been declining worldwide in recent years. These declines demonstrate the importance of understanding the basic population dynamics (e.g., patterns of growth, reproduction, and recruitment) of SAV species. In this study, I present baseline data on population dynamics for Ruppia maritima in the northern Gulf of Mexico. I documented patterns of growth and biomass allocation, allocation to reproduction, and seed density in the sediment at two depths within four sites near Mobile Bay. There was significant heterogeneity in patterns of biomass allocation, reproductive output, and …

Race And Obesity: An Exploratory Analysis Of Perceptions And Experiences Related To Weight Among Black And White Adults, Kayla Jade Santalla Jan 2009

Race And Obesity: An Exploratory Analysis Of Perceptions And Experiences Related To Weight Among Black And White Adults, Kayla Jade Santalla

Open Access Theses

This thesis explores race and gender differences in perceptions and behaviors regarding weight and obesity, along with the relative influence of individual and structural factors on the personal weight status of black and white adults. In addition, this study examines the extent to which black and white adults differ in their perceptions of discrimination attributed to their personal weight. Based on an analysis of data from a national poll conducted by ABC News and TIME magazine, results indicate that weight status perceptions of overweight black females were consistent, while incongruity was found in perceived and actual weight status among obese …

The Effects Of Fruit And Vegetable Extracts On Surrogate Endpoint Biomarkers In Curatively Treated Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients, Daniel Munoz Jan 2009

The Effects Of Fruit And Vegetable Extracts On Surrogate Endpoint Biomarkers In Curatively Treated Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients, Daniel Munoz

Open Access Theses

Dietary factors have been implicated in the risk of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Much interest has been placed upon the effects of suspected chemopreventative agents found in fruit and vegetables associated with low HNSCC risk. However, studies investigating specific uptake of these agents have failed to show positive results. The possibility exists that single chemopreventative agents fail to provide the same beneficial effect as the various compounds found in a fruits and vegetables is examined. Curatively treated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients ingested Juice Plus, a F&V extract supplement containing multiple chemopreventative agents, for 12 …

Maternal Socialization Of Emotion Regulation: Promoting Social Engagement Among Inhibited Toddlers, Elizabeth Carmen Penela Jan 2009

Maternal Socialization Of Emotion Regulation: Promoting Social Engagement Among Inhibited Toddlers, Elizabeth Carmen Penela

Open Access Theses

The ability to regulate emotions is thought to influence the development of positive peer relations in early childhood. By effectively regulating fear and anger in peer settings, social interactions tend to unfold in a smooth and successful manner, leading children to become socially competent over time. Fear regulation, however, is especially difficult for children who were highly reactive and frequently expressed negative affect as infants. These children, often referred to as having an inhibited temperament, are likely to become distressed by novel stimuli and show a high degree of vigilance and anxious behaviors as toddlers. After toddlerhood, research has shown …
