A Broader Liberty: Js Mill, Paternalism, And The Public’S Health, Lawrence O. Gostin, Kieran G. Gostin Mar 2009

A Broader Liberty: Js Mill, Paternalism, And The Public’S Health, Lawrence O. Gostin, Kieran G. Gostin

O'Neill Institute Papers

Is the ‘harm principle’, famously propounded by JS Mill and widely adopted in bioethics, an appropriate principle to guide public health regulation? The harm principle limits liberty-limiting interventions to only those instances where the person poses a significant risk of harm to others. However, much of public health regulation is not primarily directed to avert risk to others, but to safeguard the health and safety of the individual him or herself. Think about regulations regarding seatbelts, motorcycle helmets, or the fluoridation of water as illustrations of pervasive public health regulations that are primarily intended to safeguard the individual’s own health …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Theory Of An Efficacious Treatment Plan., Valerie Jeanette Johnston Mar 2009

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Theory Of An Efficacious Treatment Plan., Valerie Jeanette Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

There are numerous commonalities and similarities in the symptoms presented in those individuals suffering from Korsakoff's Syndrome, Vascular Dementia, B vitamin deficiencies and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. These similarities include physiological, neurological and psychological findings. B vitamin supplementation is being used effectively to treat several of these disorders. Because of these similarities and commonalities in both symptomology and physiology, it is my hypothesis that PTSD may be partially or totally a consequence of a B vitamin deficiency. Narrative re-exposure therapy is already in use to treat those with PTSD. Using the Biopsychosocial Model of health psychology, I propose an empirical study …

A Barrier To Exclusive Breastfeeding For Wic Enrollees: Limited Use Of Exclusive Breastfeeding Food Package For Mothers, Alison Volpe Holmes, Nancy P. Chin, Jeffrey Kaczorowski, Cindy R. Howard

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: In the first 2 weeks of life, most breastfeeding mother–infant dyads in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) receive infant formula from WIC, instead of a larger food package designed for exclusively breastfeeding mothers. This study was designed to explore reasons for high rates of formula supplementation of breastfeeding newborns enrolled in WIC and the limited use of the WIC expanded food package.

Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews with 29 mothers who either partially or exclusively breastfed for at least 2 months. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, analyzed, coded, and organized into 10 themes.

Results: …

Huntington Disease (Chorea) In The Middle East, Euan M. Scrimgeour Mar 2009

Huntington Disease (Chorea) In The Middle East, Euan M. Scrimgeour

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Huntington disease (HD) has been reported in Arab families in several Middle East countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt and in non-Arab populations in other countries in the region. It is probably under-reported, and until now, has not been recorded in Yemen, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan or in Iraq. The Middle East has always been on the crossroads of trade and travel, and HD was probably introduced to some of these countries in previous times. The prevalence rate in Middle Eastern Arabs is estimated to vary from 3 to 4 per 100,000. Although the HD gene …

Judging South Dakota Rangelands For Livestock And Wildlife Values, James R. Johnson, L. Michael Sterling Mar 2009

Judging South Dakota Rangelands For Livestock And Wildlife Values, James R. Johnson, L. Michael Sterling

SDSU Extension Circulars

Judging South Dakota Rangelands for Livestock and Wildlife Values is a major advance in the approach to contest judging of South Dakota rangelands. For 25 years beginning in the mid-1970s, range judges identified plants and determined range site, range condition, and management practices for a given set of goals (Johnson et al., EC 731, 1979). In the mid-1990s, the need for a more contemporary judging contest was clear. Oklahoma led the way by changing the National Range Judging Contest in 1994. A year later, South Dakota followed. Several years of field tests and multiple revisions resulted in the current manual.
