Leaching Of Active Ingredients From Blueberries And Cranberries Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide And Ethanol As An Entrainer And Analyzing Using Gc/Ms, Nada H. Elsayed
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Routine consumption of blueberries and cranberries has been shown to have great health benefits. Blueberries have high amounts of anthocyanin content per serving. Anthocyanins are known to be powerful antioxidants and are linked to the reduction of heart disease and cancer. New research suggests that the berries may also play a role in slowing down age related diseases such as memory loss and tissue damage caused by Alzheimer's. In addition the berries have a variety of essential vitamins and minerals that are important for overall health. Cranberries have long been used to treat urinary tract infections due to the high …

Natural Genetic Variation In Transcriptome Reflects Network Structure Inferred With Major Effect Mutations: Insulin/Tor And Associated Phenotypes In Drosophila Melanogaster, Sergey V. Nuzhdin, Jennifer A. Brisson, Andrew Pickering, Marta L. Wayne, Lawrence G. Harshman, Lauren M. Mcintyre
Natural Genetic Variation In Transcriptome Reflects Network Structure Inferred With Major Effect Mutations: Insulin/Tor And Associated Phenotypes In Drosophila Melanogaster, Sergey V. Nuzhdin, Jennifer A. Brisson, Andrew Pickering, Marta L. Wayne, Lawrence G. Harshman, Lauren M. Mcintyre
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Background: A molecular process based genotype-to-phenotype map will ultimately enable us to predict how genetic variation among individuals results in phenotypic alterations. Building such a map is, however, far from straightforward. It requires understanding how molecular variation reshapes developmental and metabolic networks, and how the functional state of these networks modifies phenotypes in genotype specific way. We focus on the latter problem by describing genetic variation in transcript levels of genes in the InR/TOR pathway among 72 Drosophila melanogaster genotypes. Results: We observe tight co-variance in transcript levels of genes not known to influence each other through direct transcriptional control. …

Community Health Sciences
Background: Obesity is an emerging problem in Pakistan. The authors sought to determine prevalence of obesity and malnutrition in school-going children, from grades 6(th) to 8(th) of different schools of Karachi and assess associations that affect the weight of the children.
Methodology/Principal Findings: A cross sectional Study Design with children studying in grades 6(th) to 8(th) grade, in different schools of Karachi. We visited 10 schools of which 4 consented, two subsidized government schools and two private schools. A questionnaire was developed in consultation with a qualified nutritionist. Height and weight were measured on calibrated scales. A modified BMI criterion …

Work-Family Conflict, Eating Behaviors, And The Role Of Coping, Ashley G. Walvoord
Work-Family Conflict, Eating Behaviors, And The Role Of Coping, Ashley G. Walvoord
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There were two primary aims of the present study. The first aim was to examine the relationships between work-interference-with-family (WIF) and specific eating behaviors (eating vegetables, fruits, snack foods) reported by employed mothers, as it relates to health criteria such as BMI. Related to this first aim, household coping strategies were proposed as playing a significant role in the relationship between WIF and eating behaviors. The second aim was to investigate the crossover of WIF to specific child eating behaviors via mother feeding practices or mother eating behaviors.
Self-report and other-report survey data were collected from working mothers and their …

We investigate natural resource-based poverty traps using a simulation model of smallholder farms in highland Kenya. Simulation modeling allows for detailed examination of the complex interactions and feedback between farm-household economic decision-making and long-term soil dynamics, which may contribute to persistent poverty among smallholders in this region. We examine the effects of changing initial endowments of land, labour and stocks of on-farm soil organic matter on the long-term welfare of these households. We find that larger farms are better able to cope with both labour shocks and deteriorating natural capital than smaller farms, with smaller farms remaining poor and unable …
