Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter Apr 2009

Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Despite the widespread concern regarding childhood obesity, there is broad divergence of opinion regarding responsibility for the crisis. Whether the government, food industry, or parents are accountable has become the focus of much debate. Public health groups have attempted various strategies to confront childhood obesity, such as litigation, legislation, and government regulation. While many researchers and advocates agree that government should play an affirmative role with respect to childhood obesity, they are very much divided over what that role should be. For example, although none of these acts has become law, eighty-six bills have been proposed regarding obesity since …

Bias In The Workplace: Consistent Evidence Of Sexual Orientation And Gender Identity Discrimination 1998–2008, M.V. Lee Badgett, Brad Sears, Holning Lau, Deborah Ho

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article summarizes social science data published during the past decade documenting discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in employment. Over the last ten years, many researchers have conducted studies to find out whether LGBT people face sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace. These studies include surveys of LGBT individuals' workplace experiences, wage comparisons between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) and heterosexual persons, analyses of discrimination complaints filed with administrative agencies, and testing studies and controlled experiments.

House Cats As Predators In The Australian Environment: Impacts And Management, Christopher R. Dickman Apr 2009

House Cats As Predators In The Australian Environment: Impacts And Management, Christopher R. Dickman

Human–Wildlife Interactions

This paper provides an overview of the predatory activities of the house cat (Felis catus) in Australia, focusing principally on the interactions of domestic and stray cats with native species of prey. Like their free-living, or feral, counterparts, domestic cats take a broad range of prey, with small mammals, birds, and human-derived foods forming the bulk of the diet. Domestic and stray cats have contributed to declines of suburban populations of eastern barred bandicoots (Perameles gunnii) and superb lyrebirds (Menura novaehollandiae) in Victoria, Australia. The effects of cats on prey communities remain speculative. In …

Book Review Of Hope's Boy: A Memoir & The Women Who Raised Me: A Memoir, John Palladino, Mark A. Giesler

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

The preparation of preservice administrators and teachers poses daunting challenges for the academy. Federal mandates associated with the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and the pressure on school districts to produce high-perform- ing students despite inadequate financial resources, have shifted public ed- ucation's focus towards youth's academic proficiency. The linear focus has trumped the nurturing role school personnel could and should fulfill in ad- dition to scholastic achievement.

Foster care youth, in particular, validate the need for educational leaders who can nurture the overall emotional well-being of vulnerable children. The blase …

Leaving Maryland Workers Behind: A Comparison Of State Employee Leave Statutes, Michael Hayes Apr 2009

Leaving Maryland Workers Behind: A Comparison Of State Employee Leave Statutes, Michael Hayes

All Faculty Scholarship

Maryland law is not quite a blank slate for employee leave rights-but it is close. While the state forbids employers from terminating employees for job time lost for jury service or attending a court proceeding in response to a subpoena or pursuant to victim's rights laws, Maryland is one of a "select few" that does not require any breaks for adult workers, including time off for meals. Maryland law does not require family or medical leave for private sector workers. In fact, the state's most generous leave law stems from repealing antiquated "blue laws" that required businesses to be closed …

Mangrove-Exported Nutrient Incorporation By Sessile Coral Reef Invertebrates, Elise F. Granek, Jana E. Compton, Donald L. Phillips Apr 2009

Mangrove-Exported Nutrient Incorporation By Sessile Coral Reef Invertebrates, Elise F. Granek, Jana E. Compton, Donald L. Phillips

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Coastal mangrove forests were historically considered as a source of organic matter (OM) for adjacent marine systems due to high net primary production; yet recent research suggesting little uptake through the food web because of low nutritional quality, challenges the concept of trophic linkage between mangrove forests and coral reefs. To examine the importance of mangrove forests to coral reef nutrient availability, we examined sessile reef-forming invertebrate consumers including hard corals, sponges, a bivalve mollusc, polychaete annelid and tunicate, and potential sources of OM (decaying mangrove leaves, microalgae, macroalgae, and seagrass) in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Using stable isotope analyses …

A Proposal For A Student Office For Sustainability And Awareness, Frank Michael Malatesta

Grace Allen Scholars Theses

The environment has been neglected for too much of the history of industrialized society, Only now, after much damage has occurred, are nations beginning to support environmentally friendly policies and initiatives. Despite the effort, the need for change has not hit the all of thepopulation with a "Jolt." One of the best places to develop a sustainability mindset is at the University level. Universities must lead the example as the focal points of their respective communities and as the training grounds for the leaders of tommorrow. Currently, the University of South Florida falls short in the endeavor. The University lacks …

Nutrient And Fiber Type Relationships In Barrosã Muscles, P. Costa, L. C. Roseiro, V. Alves, Chris R. Calkins, R. J. B. Bessa, C. Santos Apr 2009

Nutrient And Fiber Type Relationships In Barrosã Muscles, P. Costa, L. C. Roseiro, V. Alves, Chris R. Calkins, R. J. B. Bessa, C. Santos

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Fiber type and nutrient compositions from Biceps femoris (Bf), Longissimus dorsi (Ld) and Supraspinatus (Ss) muscles of 10 Barrosã calves were determined and the respective relationships investigated by principal component analysis (PCA). The Ss muscle had higher proportion of type IIA fibers than Bf (P < 0.001) and Ld (P < 0.01), higher percentage of oxidative fibers than Ld muscle (P < 0.01) and lower proportion of IIB fibers than Bf (P P < 0.01). The latter muscle had higher intramuscular total lipids (ITL) (P P c9t11-CLA (P < 0.001), saturated fatty acids (SFA) (P < trans fatty acids (TFA) (P P P < n-6 PUFA (P < n-3 PUFA (P < 0.01), polyunsaturated/saturated fatty ac¬ids ratio (P/S) (P < 0.001) and hypocholesterolaemic/hypercholesterolaemic fatty acid ratio (h/H) (P P < and phospholipids (PL) (P < 0.05) contents were found in Ss muscle. Cholesterol amount was unaffected by anatomical location and ranged from 0.50 to 0.54 mg/g. Barrosã muscles were not well dis¬tinguishable by PCA since, based on fiber and nutritional compositions, they did not clearly present different pat¬terns. Barrosã-PDO veal is a low fat meat providing 367–558 mg of n-6 PUFA and 151-172 mg of n-3 PUFA of which 67–78 mg are EPA + DHA (based on 150 g consumption). The n-6 …

The Benefit Of Foliar Applied Copper Fertilizer On Romaine Lettuce Grown In Low Copper Soils Of The Coastal Santa Maria, California, Emmy R. Williams

Master's Theses

The importance of trace elements nutrients to vegetable crops has received more attention in recent years. Accordingly this experiment investigated the benefit of foliar applied copper fertilizer on romaine lettuce (Lactuca Sativa Longifolia) grown in low soil Copper (Cu) concentration in the coastal Santa Maria, California. The various rates of Cu fertilizer applied include untreated (control), 100, 200, 400 and 800 grams per acre of CuSO4.5H 2O, using a one time and a split application methods. Three consecutive individual experimental fields were established starting in late spring through the fall of 2008. The soil texture was a loam in all …

The Development And Pilot Of A Culinary Intervention Designed Using The Social Cognitive Theory To Teach Nutrition To Adolescent Girls, Julie Anne Chessen Apr 2009

The Development And Pilot Of A Culinary Intervention Designed Using The Social Cognitive Theory To Teach Nutrition To Adolescent Girls, Julie Anne Chessen

Master's Theses

In the past 20 years, the way in which food is prepared has rapidly changed. Convenience has become a way of life and Americans have replaced meals made from scratch with meals that are quick and easy. During that time, body mass index has risen steadily. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children has become common in the American population. “Pink Chefs,” a six-week culinary intervention for middle school girls 12 to 14-years-old, was developed and piloted to combat childhood obesity by teaching nutrition through basic cooking skills. The social cognitive theory was used as the theoretical framework. The …

Medicinal Plants For Snake Bite Treatment - Future Focus, Kuntal Das Apr 2009

Medicinal Plants For Snake Bite Treatment - Future Focus, Kuntal Das

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Snake bite is a major health hazard that leads to high mortality and great suffering in victims. The remedies are of great interest since they may have recognizable therapeutic or toxic effects and are steeped in cultural beliefs that invariably conflict with formal health care practices. The study of the interaction between plants and people is invaluable in discovering new herbal medicines and plant-derived drugs. The present study was aimed at conserving largely herbal drug knowledge and availing to the scientific world the plant therapies used as antivenom in the society. The long-term goal is to actualize conventional snake bite …
